Chapter 77: Ch 77: Security Logs?

Meanwhile...Alan and Daniel were having their own little adventure, but neither of them looked happy.

"Do you have a plan for getting to the security room and stealing the footage? Or do you expect things to just work out for you? You must have lived a pretty privileged life if that is the case."

Daniel taunted Alan as he followed him toward the ’security and storage’ section of the academy.

He tried to anger Alan, but it did not work. Instead of snapping back, Alan let out a small laugh that made Daniel feel awkward.

"I did live a privileged life as far as I can remember. It must be because of my good fortune. And now the same fortune led me to Noah as well. And I am going to do what I can to hold on to him."

Alan assured Daniel, who could only grit his teeth and follow after the esper.

Soon, Alan stopped, and Daniel followed his gaze. They both noticed that there was a guard in front of the security and storage facility.

"There is a guard. What should we do? What ability do you have? Will it be helpful?"

Daniel asked Alan, who sighed in disappointment.

"Haven’t you heard? You should never ask an esper what their ability is. It is one of the unwritten rules of society. But then again, I hardly expect you to respect an esper. Especially not with your attitude."

Alan gave a back-handed compliment that Daniel ignored. Instead, he watched as Alan raised his hand and then waved it.

The guard standing in front of the room swayed and then fell unconscious. Daniel was sure that it was some kind of ability, but it had happened so fast that he was not able to make sense of what it was.

"What did you do?"

He asked Alan, whose smile widened when he looked at Daniel.

"I can let you experience for yourself what I did. Are you interested?"

He asked, and Daniel just glared at him in response. It was enough for Alan to start laughing before following Alan inside.

"I made sure to carry the security camera jammer. No one would be able to tell that we were here even if they wanted to."

The cameras outside the hall and the ones that were supposed to look at them showed the footage from before Daniel and Alan came inside. It was clear that Alan had taken care of this rather well.

Daniel did not question how Alan knew how to do all this. He was sure that it was through illegal means, and the artifact he had was because of his father’s money.

Instead, he focused his power on trying to find the thing he was here for.

"You should start looking from there while I do the same thing here. We are looking for reports we can use to pressure the teachers."

Alan told him, and Daniel nodded and started browsing through the documents.

But there was a lot of stuff in there, and some of it was even locked behind a key.

"Hey, look at this safe. What do you think is in it...hey, what are you doing?"

Daniel hissed as he looked at Alan’s actions. The esper was breaking into the locked space with ease, and soon, the door was opened.

"What did you do? What if they find us-"

"Relax. I have done this before. I promise you that they won’t find me."

Daniel noticed the use of ’me’ and not ’us’, which made him want to smack the esper on top of his head. But he held that desire back and instead focused on what was inside the safe.

"So, what did you find?"

He asked Alan, and the esper took out a few files from the safe.

"Hmm, it seems to be data on some kind of experiment. It says EGDP (Esper-Guide Development Program). Looks like it was an experiment carried out to develop a higher-grade esper-guide pair in partnership with the academy and the state labs. This looks like shady business."

Alan looked interested, and even Daniel felt curious. A part of him was telling him that he should check this report out.

Daniel forgot all about the real reason why he came here, and instead, he reached for the papers in the safe.

"It says that it was a long-term experiment carried out almost 10 years ago. It ended when a fire engulfed the whole research facility and left only one survivor, who died soon after. Humans sure find all kinds of ugly ways to profit."

Alan sounded a little bitter as he read through the files. But there was no concrete information present in them.

Daniel also looked through the files, but noticed that there was no picture attached to anything. There was only written information and a string of identification numbers for the subjects.

He kept reading until he came across numbers that felt familiar to him.

[Subject S-001: A B-grade Guide. Nothing remarkable, but was under experimentation by the lead researcher.

Has been marked for disposal, but the head researcher says he ’needs’ him. Further investigation into the matter has been prohibited.

Danger Rating: 0/10. Safe to approach and make contact with.]

[Subject E-001: SSS-Grade Esper. Highly capable and dependable. Developed as a pair with Subject G-002 but has shown weird behaviour.

Shows signs of possessiveness and obsessiveness toward Subject S-001 and is highly unstable.

Danger Rating: 10/10. Do not approach if Subject S-001 is not present.]

[Subject G-002: SSS-Grade Guide. Is moody but generally calm. Can become agitated if taken away from Subject S-001. Developed as the guide pair of Subject E-001 but shows signs of dislike.

Follows Subject S-001 around like a lost child. Has shown no sign of being dangerous yet, but the possibility cannot be ruled out.

Danger Rating: 5/10. It depends on the mood. But generally, wait for Subject S-001 to be present.]
