Chapter 1454: Chapter 1454: You Brought This Upon Yourself

"Stabbed by someone?"

Hearing the severity in his words, Scarlett Yates’ expression changed immediately. Initially skeptical, she quickly rushed toward him in her anxiety.

"Scarlett, I seem to be unable to stand up." Matthew Saxon saw her approaching, and pretended to be even weaker, his brows furrowed tightly, even his breathing had become much weaker.

"You brought this on yourself by drinking such a large glass of ice water just now." Scarlett worried he might turn out like Knox Simmons had said, so she hastily extended a hand to help him up. She complained verbally, but her eyes betrayed a trace of worry as she looked at him.

Matthew immediately reached out his hand, smoothly wrapping it around her waist, his arm tightly coiled around her as he slowly stood up, frowning.

The moment his hand touched her waist, Scarlett’s body stiffened.

Her instinct was to push him away, but she felt that as soon as Matthew came close to her, it was as if a chill was approaching her.

She accidentally brushed against his hand.

Matthew’s hand was icy, so cold that she felt like she was touching a block of ice.

At the same moment, as if he could guess what she wanted to do, Matthew "weakly" leaned against her, placing his head close to her ear, whispering, "Scarlett, I feel my body getting weaker and weaker, as if the strength inside is slowly fading away. Do you think I might be seriously ill?"

After speaking, he "weakly" coughed a couple of times, and after that, like he was very exhausted, he panted twice beside her ear.

"Stop talking nonsense." Scarlett glared at him, a bit anxious, and the hand that was about to push him away slowly retracted.

"We’ll go to the hospital for a proper check-up later. Maybe it’s just a minor illness or ache, and with some medication, it’ll be fine."

Even as she spoke, she felt uncertain, her heart filled with unease.

Matthew Saxon was acting very strangely.

At least, since she had known him, she had never seen him appear before her in such a frail and helpless manner.

Even back when he was a prisoner, he wasn’t this despondent.

Seeing her worry for him made Matthew feel even more complacent, and the hand wrapped around her waist grew bold, pulling her closer to him: "Scarlett, if I’m really seriously ill, would you despise me for it?"

If Scarlett wasn’t so anxious and worried, she would notice that despite Matthew claiming to be so weak that he couldn’t even stand properly, the hand around her waist held strength, nearly pulling her into his embrace with just a slight force.

"I told you not to talk nonsense." Scarlett bit her lip harder, the worry in her eyes deepening.

In case Matthew lacked the strength to walk, she also placed a hand on his waist. To onlookers, their embrace looked incredibly intimate.

Matthew’s cunning scheme succeeded, and naturally, he felt very smug. The more elated he was, the more exaggerated his acting became, his dramatics were truly over the top.

First, he sighed softly in Scarlett’s ear, then with a very melancholic and desolate tone, he said, "Scarlett, I’m not talking nonsense, I mean it. Do you know why I refused to get checked before? I was actually a bit scared, scared that I’d really find out about some serious illness. At that point, I would have no choice but to let you go."
