Chapter 1235: The Monster Behind This

Finally… After walking for at least five more minutes, we eventually came to what looked like a metal doorway that had been raised up off the ground to allow us to pass underneath it.

I’m assuming the machine had powered this to lift it up and open the way for us.

And seeing that there was another portal in front of us, I guess this was the way out.

Now that leaves just one question…

I turned to the monster that had guided us here, “What do we do with this one?”

Odeta cracked her knuckles, “Isn’t it obvious? We just get rid of it~”

Surprisingly, Minnera stepped forward and shook her head, “I say we just leave it. We had told this creature that if it led us to the way out, we would spare its life. I will not go back on my words.”

Well… I’m not against letting it live since it shouldn’t be able to follow us to the other area anyway, so we can just hop in through this portal and forget about it.

“Let’s just go then. There’s no need to kill it,” I decided with a shrug. “It did fulfill its role to bring us here so I don’t want to be a hypocrite here.”

The others seemed to accept my answer and Odeta scoffed at the creature, “Well, guess it’s your lucky day. Get lost before we change our mind.”

The creature immediately turned and ran off with its tail tucked between its legs.

No, it doesn’t have a tail, that was a figure of speech.

I turned back to the portal, “Well… Shall we go?”

I reached out my hands towards my girls and I was kind of expecting two of my girls to grab my hand and the rest to grab theirs to form a sort of human chain.

But what ended up happening was everyone coming forward to grab my hand specifically which, of course, meant that they were just grabbing every free part of my arm.

Well… This works I guess?

With all of them holding on to me, I stepped through the portal and we emerged in a large hall.

This time, I think we reached the end of whatever this place was supposed to be because this looked like a throne room and there was a single skeleton sitting on top of the throne.

The skeleton was wearing ornate robes and a dark coloured flame surrounded its skull.

Its empty eye sockets suddenly gleamed to reveal two, smaller orbs of fire inside them as it turned its head to face us.

Huh… Assuming that thing’s the boss… Does that mean that we had somehow accidentally entered a Dungeon this entire time?

The skeleton rose up from its throne and floated up into the air, reaching out one of its bony hands to materialise a golden staff that had a large blue orb at the tip of said staff.

And as if to confirm that this was indeed a boss monster, an organ started playing in the background and this wasn’t due to my [Heed Thy Call] boon either… Which I knew that was the case because the girls around me also reacted to the music too.

Lisa looked around, “What’s that sound?”

“It’s music? Is this supposed to be a performance?” Delmare asked.

I cleared my throat, “Ahem… Err… This happens when there’s a boss battle I guess… Whoever created this is most likely an Off-Worlder… I wasn’t sure before but I think this pretty much confirms it…”

Minnera sighed, “I thought so… I’m guessing this is a Dungeon that another Off-Worlder took over as the Dungeon Master and they set a trap there to teleport whoever tried to camp in that clearing inside this Dungeon instead.”

I nodded, “Sounds about right… So I guess we’ll have to beat this boss first… Though I’m not sure if this is just a floor boss or the Dungeon boss itself.”

Odeta punched her fists together, “Wahahaha! It doesn’t matter right?! We just need to beat it!!”

Well… First things first… Let’s take a look at its stats with [Screened].

Oh damn…

“That’s a High Horror Lich!” I cried out, feeling a little concerned at that high magic stats.

Lisa frowned, “What’s a monster like this doing here? No wait… This would explain everything actually. This monster uses people’s fears as its weapon! We have to–”

The Lich pointed its staff at Lisa and a beam of light was shot out from the blue ball, flying straight towards her chest.

I wordlessly created a light shield in front of her with [Light Forge], deflecting what I believe should be a [Laser] spell away.

Which was odd because that Lich should not be able to use Lumenmancy magic so I assume it’s an enchantment of the staff.

Lisa clucked her tongue, “As I was saying, we have to prevent it from casting spells! It might make us hallucinate and see each other as enemies!”

As though that triggered it, the Lich raised its hand and purple orbs began to gather in its palm.

Obviously we weren’t going to just stand here and watch it complete its spell so my girls charged towards it while I sent a [Laser] of my own at it.

My spell struck the Lich in the hand where it was concentrating on its spell, hoping that it would dispel or interrupt whatever it was trying to do.

Unfortunately, a kind of barrier appeared around it and my spell was deflected away instead, leaving not even a scratch on that barrier.

Katsuki then appeared behind it, her daggers lashing out to attack the Lich from behind.

But once again, the barrier appeared and protected the monster from harm, her daggers rebounding off the shield harmlessly.

Emilia appeared near the Lich next, her sword slashing out so quickly that I could barely see the after image it left behind.

The barrier appeared once more but it seems like after taking mine and Katsuki’s attacks, it was already at its limit and shattered after receiving Emilia’s slash.

As the purple orbs started to get bigger, a loud gunshot rang out as Minnera fired one of her pistols at the Lich’s hand, knocking it to the side and dispersing the purple orbs.

Good job, Minnera!! Now quickly before it tries to do anything else!!

Odeta leapt towards the Lich, her fist already pulled back in preparation to punch at it.

But just as she was about to land the blow, the monster suddenly warped and disappeared, reappearing a short distance away instead and causing Odeta to hit nothing but empty air.

Tsk… I’m guessing that’s its Astromancy magic…

One thing though… I’m not hearing any chanting coming from the Lich so I’m assuming that it’s either a skill of the Lich’s or it’s actually chanting but we can’t hear it because it’s a skeleton.

It raised up its staff again and a blast of purple light enveloped the area, prompting several skeletons wearing armour and wielding various different weapons to materialise around us.

The Lich then teleported itself back above the throne, as though confident that the newly summoned skeletons would be able to deal with us.

While I could simply just summon my Shadow Guards to match their numbers as well, I have a feeling my girls want to fight this themselves.

Sure enough, Odeta let out a roar and charged towards the group with the most skeletons, already smashing them away with her fists.

The others also spread themselves out to start whittling down their numbers, easily dispatching them despite being outnumbered.

Seems like aside from numbers, the skeletons the Lich summoned didn’t really have anything else going for them.

I concentrated on healing and buffing my girls as needed as they plowed through the small army of skeletons while also keeping an eye on the Lich in case it did anything else.

For now though, the Lich seemed content to just float above its throne to watch the battle unfold, even though it was clear that the small army it summoned was no match for us.

When about three quarters of the summoned skeletons were wiped out, the Lich finally started to move again, the monster raising its staff and letting out another burst of purple light that enveloped the hall.

All the skeletons that we had defeated suddenly reassembled themselves and stood right back up again, ready to fight once more.

Tsk… So it’s that kind of fight huh? This monster could just keep summoning the skeletons again and again to tire us out and in order to stop it, we have to attack it directly… But to do that, we would have to get through their summons…

Fine then… If you want to play it that way…
