Nathan Mills scooped her up at the waist, half-jokingly, half-seriously saying, "How should we spend our wedding night?"

"I just had surgery," Carlotta Sterling blushed. Something like this hadn’t happened to her in many years, and suddenly it felt a bit overwhelming.

But marrying the right person made her heart race, and she still felt that youthful flutter.

Old Mills held her, walking towards the bed as he said, "But Dr. Shelby said you’re fine now."

"You..."

The night deepened...

The two, reunited after a long time, slept together for the first time with fitting identities.

The next morning, still exhausted, the two remained nestled together in sleep, drowsy and peaceful.

Janelle Mills woke up early, deciding to go out to buy them breakfast and get Carlotta Sterling’s favorite red bean cake to conjure up some nostalgia.

As soon as she reached the street, she saw the long queue in front of the breakfast shop. Luckily, it wasn’t as bad as she anticipated, so she quickly lined up at the end.

From a distance, she could smell the unique fragrance of the red bean cake, overly enticing in the early morning.

Soon after, Bertie got out of his car and headed in her direction, lining up behind Janelle Mills.

He was also relieved that today’s queue was shorter than yesterday’s because he had come earlier.

Yesterday, he waited almost an hour; this pastry shop’s business was exceptionally good, with many repeat customers.

He had stumbled upon it accidentally yesterday, and seeing the long line, figured it must be good, so he decided to try it. Today, he wanted to buy some for his still-sleeping son and daughter-in-law to taste.

Janelle Mills accidentally turned her gaze, and instantly recognized the middle-aged man behind her; their eyes met briefly and both paused in recognition.

"It’s you?" Bertie, recognizing her lively eyes, said, "Do you remember me? We met at the bookstore and had tea together."

"Hello, Uncle." Janelle smiled, "I’m really sorry about that day, my mom was in the hospital then."

"I understand." Bertie happily shared, "Thanks to you, I went to my prospective daughter-in-law’s parents with the utmost sincerity and expressed my intentions directly, putting their minds at ease to entrust their child to my son."

"Reasonable parents would agree." Janelle had a quite favorable opinion of him, "You’re so good-natured, clearly an affectionate father."

Receiving the young lady’s praise brought joy to the middle-aged man’s face, "Girl, you’re here to buy breakfast too? This shop’s pastries are really special, taste great."

"My mom loves it," Janelle too was happy to share, "I’m mainly buying for her."

"I also stumbled upon this place yesterday; the taste was unforgettable, so I came today to get some for my son and daughter-in-law to try."

"You’re truly a good father." Janelle’s eyes shone with admiration, "Do you have a daughter?"

"..." Bertie’s smile subtly froze.

Janelle hesitated, realizing she might have touched a sensitive topic, "I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked personal questions. I feel like I can talk to you as a friend."

Bertie, knowing the young girl had no ill intent, smiled warmly and replied, "I have a daughter, but... she’s not by my side; she left many, many years ago."

This reminded Janelle of herself, could it be... he divorced his wife?

His son stayed with him while his ex-wife took the daughter?

"She must love you very much," Janelle said with a hint of comfort in her voice and a soft smile, "Just as you love her very much."
