“Ahem!” Mr. Fairchild cleared his throat but didn’t join the conversation.

Mrs. Fairchild shot him a glare, then turned to her son. “You really can’t stand the sight of her?”

“Yeah,” Evan Fairchild nodded.

“Why do you dislike Megan so much?” his mother couldn’t help but ask. “I think she’s a perfectly fine girl. Since you can’t seem to find a girlfriend yourself, why not just make do? Maybe feelings will develop over time. Look at your eldest brother and his wife. They weren’t like that at first, but look how loving they are now.”

“Do you really believe Eldest Brother had zero feelings for his wife back then?”

Mrs. Fairchild was stumped.

“Times are different, and so are the ways people express love. Eldest Brother has his way, Second Brother has his, and I have mine.”

‘My youngest son has always been an idiot when it comes to romance,’ Mrs. Fairchild thought. ‘But today, that same idiot is schooling me, and he’s making perfect sense! I can’t even think of a comeback.’

“Then tell me, why don’t you like Megan?”

“She’s ugly,” Evan Fairchild repeated.

What a hurtful thing to say. When he was a child, you could brush it off as him being young and ignorant. But for him to say it now gave it a completely different weight, one that couldn’t be smoothed over.

“How is she ugly? She’s adorable! And do you think any of those pretty faces from the entertainment industry could ever marry into the Fairchild Family?”

“And how noble is a Fairchild daughter-in-law? Is she expected to rule over a harem in the future?” Evan retorted.

Mrs. Fairchild choked, once again finding herself without a comeback for her son.

“It’s not about marrying an empress, and it doesn’t have to be a perfect match of social status. But she at least has to be a girl of good character. Don’t the Langdons have a comparable standing to us? Am I some wicked mother-in-law?”

“No. You treat my sisters-in-law like your own daughters.”

“Now that sounds better! I’m adding a new rule: the woman you bring home absolutely cannot be from the entertainment industry!”

Evan Fairchild just smiled and said nothing.

“Did you hear me or not?”

“Mom, I’m the one looking for a wife. All that matters is that I like her, not that you do.”

“You like? Isn’t the one you like that boy from the Rockwell Family?”

“What kind of way is that to talk? You’re getting more and more outrageous. Are you even his mother?” Master Fairchild finally couldn’t take it anymore.

“His biological mother! That’s exactly why I can say it! Just tell me the truth, is it… that kind of relationship? Don’t worry. Your mother may be old, but I can keep up with the times. Don’t you worry, I can handle it. We’re in a sanatorium, and they have the most advanced emergency care in the country.”

“You seem to be in good spirits. Seeing as you can say so much in one breath, you must be pretty much recovered. I’ll head back to Jansburg tomorrow.”

“I… I can’t breathe! Quick, old man, press the call button!”

“Mom!” Evan Fairchild cried out in exasperation.

Having an elder in the family is like having a treasure, they say.

And his family had a matching set.

“I’m not what you think. Don’t worry, I’m perfectly normal.”

“Then Jasper Rockwell… is the one who is?”

“I don’t know,” Evan Fairchild gave an ambiguous answer.

“Then he definitely is!”

Master Fairchild lay on the opposite bed, a look of utter despair on his face.

“My sister-in-law invited Megan Langdon to stay for dinner, so I won’t be eating here today.”

“You and that actress, what’s her name… roe… Melody Monroe! Right, Melody Monroe. Are you serious about her?”

“I’m serious.”

“You!” Mrs. Fairchild grabbed a pillow and threw it at Evan Fairchild.

Evan Fairchild didn’t dodge. As he turned, the pillow hit him in the back. He walked out without looking back.
