Chapter 571: The Third Son Has Learned to Brag

So, in their eyes, Megan Langdon was still just a kid.

Evan Fairchild was of a higher generation. Even though Mrs. Fairchild was quite fond of Megan, Evan was still generationally her senior.

Unless, of course, the marriage between their families actually came to pass.

“I’m going upstairs to see Mom and Dad.”

“Go on,” Noelle Grant said quickly.

‘She was afraid his presence would only make the atmosphere more awkward.’

“He’s still the same as when we were kids,” Megan Langdon said suddenly, her tone a mixture of nostalgia and resignation.

“Yeah. He made you cry plenty when you were kids.”

Evan was several years older than her, and he’d gone abroad at the age of seven. He only ever came back for a few days around the New Year.

Her first real memory of Evan was from when she was seven.

And it wasn’t a pleasant memory at all.

Even though she hadn’t been a particularly beautiful child, she was always well-liked wherever she went.

But Evan just plain disliked her.

No matter how much she tried to win him over, running to his house to see him, he wouldn’t even spare her a single glance.

Later, she overheard a conversation.

“Evan, why aren’t you playing with Megan?”

“Childish.”

“You’re not that much older yourself. You should try to play with other kids more.”

“Ugly!”

That single word dealt a devastating blow to Megan’s young heart! She cried her eyes out, utterly miserable.

Evan’s one-word reply—”Ugly!”—said it all.

Megan loved to follow him around, and their parents always teased them about it. With that one word, “Ugly!”, he put an end to all of it.

“Come on, Megan, let’s keep chatting. You should stay for dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Fairchild will be overjoyed to see you. They mentioned you were coming back soon, but we never imagined it would be this soon!”

“Okay! I was hoping to stay for dinner today. I loved coming over for meals when I was little. All those years I was abroad, thinking about it always made me so happy. What I miss most of all is the food at the Fairchilds’.”

Zoe Quinn and Noelle Grant glanced at each other, smiled, and didn’t reply.

‘Coming over for a free meal and wanting to eat the Fairchilds’ food were two completely different things.’

Zoe Quinn didn’t know about Evan Fairchild and Melody Monroe.

Noelle, however, knew everything.

‘So, it was clear that in the future, Megan probably wouldn’t be able to get a single free meal here.’

Noelle had married into the family more recently and had no rapport with Megan. Her loyalties already lay with Melody Monroe and Ian, so she was distant toward Megan from the very start.

Zoe, meanwhile, remembered what happened when they were children, but she still felt the need to keep some distance now.

Because Megan was clearly here about the marriage.

‘No one could make decisions about Evan’s marriage. Not even his parents.’

‘When they were young, little squabbles were just kids’ business. But now that they were grown, a conflict over a potential marriage would involve both families.’

As Evan Fairchild went upstairs, he saw his parents talking in low voices.

The moment they saw him approach, they went silent.

“You look well today.”

“Oh, I’m still not feeling well. Help me to bed,” Mrs. Fairchild said immediately.

Evan Fairchild stepped forward and helped Mrs. Fairchild onto the bed.

“Did you see Megan?” Mrs. Fairchild asked.

“I did.”

“I’m telling you, if you can’t bring home a wife in one year, I’m arranging for you to marry Megan. You are not to object.”

“I have no objection,” Evan replied quietly.

“So, does that mean you’re actually interested in Megan?”

“No. It means I’ll definitely bring someone back.”

“Well now, who knew our third son could be such a braggart!” Mrs. Fairchild shot a pointed look at Mr. Fairchild.
