Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System

Chapter 284: The Armada Came to Reclaim the Living Host

A red lantern reached the branch seed before Raska could lift her saw.

Red light passed through black glass without breaking it. Three thin roots opened inside the glow and drove into the white collars.

Under Jiang, the graveback tried to fly.

Its back slammed upward beneath Bone Orchard. Keeps jumped on their branch lines, roofs struck bridges, and the opened living plate snapped shut on Raska’s saw.

Jiang hit the rib breast-first.

A second red root pulled Tide-Fin sideways.

Hot marrow fluid became a river. It caught Jiang under the keel and threw him toward the branch seed while the graveback’s buried fin dragged toward reflected starwater.

Deep-Claw answered last.

Road bone beneath the carrier split with a sound like a tree being torn out of winter ground.

[FORCED EVOLUTION CONFLICT | SKY-BONE / TIDE-FIN / DEEP-CLAW UNDER FOREIGN HOLD | HOST CHOICE ABSENT]

"I know," Jiang said.

His words became bubbles against black glass.

Outside, the second lantern lowered through the broken crown. It had no chain and no visible hand. Its light bent around the flight spar and pulled.

Raska braced one boot against living plate.

"Cut that line!" she shouted.

Not one fighter moved.

There was nothing solid between lantern and bone.

The light ran through swords, pruning hooks, and one thrown spear. Red on the other side, the spear buried itself in a keep wall.

"Different suggestion," Raska said. "Stop throwing our sharp things at the sky."

Another lurch ran through the graveback.

One of the nursery bridges folded against a marrow trunk. Families clung to the living rail while fighters from Bone Orchard severed the far supports.

Raska looked once toward the crown she had spent years keeping alive.

"Take the people," she called. "The walls have enjoyed a longer life than most of us."

Her fighters started cutting.

Inside the carrier, the three collars pulled in a rhythm that never changed.

Jiang touched the nearest rib with the hard side of his beak.

Its living answer moved beneath that rhythm. Pain gathered, shifted, and pushed back in a different place each time. Living pressure did not repeat itself for the lanterns.

Splitflow gave him no map.

It gave him the difference under his beak.

White bone tightened whenever the red light pulled. Between those pulls, the graveback twisted the plate away from it.

Jiang waited for that living twist.

White bone lifted from the black seed.

He jammed the split tip beneath the lifted bone.

Pain punched through his jaw. His feet skidded along the wet rib, and his bad flipper folded before it could brace him.

Bone began closing around his beak.

Jiang bit down harder.

Living plate shoved outward beneath him.

Black glass and white bone moved against each other. Jiang let their strength meet across his beak, then turned his head the way an emperor penguin turned a fish that was too wide to swallow.

A crack split the outer flight collar.

One white piece spun into the hot current. Another stayed buried in living tissue.

[SKY-BONE OUTER COLLAR BROKEN | IMPOSED PATH REMAINS]

Red light abandoned the broken ring and sank deeper into the flight spar.

"That was not enough," Jiang said.

"Your gift for encouragement survives everything," Raska called through the open seam.

Black glass struck her trapped saw and tore it from the plate.

Raska let the tool go before it took her fingers. She drew the short blade from her belt instead.

Above her, Kessa opened Maelin’s cracked doors.

Bone Orchard people stopped at the threshold. Dead founder ribs lined one wall, a foreign keep burdened the roof, and no space looked willing to receive another disaster.

"Come in breathing," Kessa told them. "The dead can complain after."

Hest tore loose a roof panel to widen the entry. Valea cut every fresh root that tried to close around the newcomers.

Maelin’s hall received bodies.

It received no new founder.

Across the road, Sivra ran beside Myrn’s injured shoulder.

The road did not know Sivra anymore. Its pale joints stayed blank beneath her boots.

She pointed to the branch that would break next.

Myrn chose it anyway.

The road-beast lowered her good shoulder beneath the hanging nursery and shoved until the last family reached Maelin’s roof.

No harness tightened around her.

When the nursery cleared, Sivra cut the support behind them.

The falling branch shaved past Myrn’s hind leg, leaving no more room than a broken rail.

Tide-Fin swept again.

Jiang lost his rib.

Hot fluid spun him around the branch seed. His injured shoulder struck glass, his unstable leg kicked empty fluid, and high-root slid along his back without pulling.

Aylin felt every jolt through the line.

"Signal if you want out," she said.

"The seed reaches the lantern if I leave."

"That was not the question."

"Do not pull me."

Aylin kept the line slack.

Tide-Fin drove Jiang toward the second collar.

He tucked his beak against his breast and surrendered to the current’s shove. His feet trailed behind. His failed wing did nothing.

That uselessness saved him.

The collar’s white prongs closed where a balanced swimmer’s stroke should have been. Jiang arrived crooked, with one shoulder low and both webbed feet on the same side.

He spread his toes across the inner ring.

The fin stroke reversed.

Water pressure flattened his body against black glass. His coat held the fluid away from skin, but heat reached the torn places and made every old wound feel newly opened.

Jiang kicked both webbed feet against the ring.

The unstable leg gave first.

His body slipped below the position the collar had prepared to trap.

He caught the lower prong with his beak and kicked with the stronger leg.

The ring peeled away from the seed.

Tide-Fin tore it in half on its next stroke.

One shard vanished into the carrier. The other struck high-root and tangled there.

[TIDE-FIN OUTER COLLAR BROKEN]

A brighter System panel opened over the red seed.

[HOST CONTROL OFFER | SEIZE ONE PATH TO RESIST FOREIGN RECLAMATION | REWARD: CONTROL]

"And bury the other two deeper," Jiang said.

"No. Keep your reward."

White light folded away.

Nothing in the System had changed.

Armada lanterns had learned faster.

All the red light moved into Deep-Claw.

The graveback’s digging path bit down.

Bone road burst through the lower orchard. A row of pruning nests lifted on one side and spilled fighters, baskets, and blankets across the crown.

Raska caught a child with her cut hand.

The white lines burned across her palm. She nearly dropped him, caught his coat against her chest, and passed him to a fighter without looking away from the opened plate.

"All nests off the spine!" she shouted. "If it was not born with the beast, it does not ride the next movement."

"You were not born with it," Kessa called.

"I am developing a personal exception."

Raska drove her short blade into the plate seam and forced it open again.

Below her, Jiang crawled after the branch seed as Deep-Claw dragged it toward the road bone.

Living walls narrowed the hot channel.

He could not swim against the pull. He put his breast down, hooked his beak over one living ridge, and dragged his body forward.

His failed wing scraped behind him.

His unstable foot found the wall, slipped, and found it again.

Deep-Claw pulled with the same borrowed shape as Jiang’s body: one weak side, one stronger kick, one shoulder that could not carry a clean load.

It knew his damage.

It did not know how tired he was.

Jiang stopped trying to make the injured leg useful.

He let it trail. He advanced by beak, breast, and the stronger webbed foot, ugly enough that no offered evolution would have chosen the movement.

Deep-Claw’s collar waited beneath the branch seed.

Its prongs had already entered road bone.

Jiang reached the upper edge and found no gap for his beak.

The living pressure beneath him shifted.

The pressure did not shift upward. It moved around him.

The graveback was rolling pain from one side of its spine to the other, searching for somewhere the hook did not follow.

Jiang flattened his keel.

The pressure passed beneath him and twisted the black seed.

For one instant, the third collar carried the Armada’s pull while the graveback’s body moved another way.

Jiang stamped both webbed feet onto the ring.

The unstable leg folded.

His weight fell sideways instead of down.

That crooked fall ripped a road-buried prong free.

He caught it between the hard edges of his beak and wrenched.

The deep split opened until warm blood spread across his tongue.

The prong came free.

Deep-Claw pulled the rest of the collar apart.

[DEEP-CLAW OUTER COLLAR BROKEN | CENTRAL RECLAMATION HOOK REMAINS]

The three white rings were broken.

Black glass still held.

A single pale hook ran through its center and into the graveback’s spine. Red light filled that hook from every lantern above.

Raska forced the outer seam wide enough to see it.

"Can I cut the black thing?"

"Not without taking its spine."

"Can I cut the white thing?"

"Not while it is carrying all three pulls."

Raska stared down into the hot channel.

"I liked the colors better before they all became terrible choices."

The carrier’s back rose toward the lanterns. Its fin dragged toward starwater. Deep-Claw tore the road beneath it.

Every forced path remained open.

Jiang looked at the broken collar shard tangled in high-root.

"Aylin. I need the line."

High-root tightened by a finger’s touch and stopped.

"Do you need it for yourself?"

"For the loose bone. Never the host."

"Show me what to follow."

Jiang bit the shard and carried it around the flight wound. He caught high-root beneath it, then pulled once.

Aylin took up the slack.

A collar shard wedged across the wound and held the upper passage open.

Cold air entered the channel.

Jiang dragged the line through the fin wound next. Aylin followed each movement without choosing its direction.

Starwater spilled through the second opening.

He looped the final length around the prong torn from Deep-Claw.

Road dust breathed through the third.

Above them, Raska saw where all three wounds pressed against the outer plate.

She cut the sky side.

Bone Orchard fighters opened the water side.

Sivra showed Myrn the road seam, and Myrn kicked it apart because she chose to.

Sky stood open above the graveback.

It had room to enter starwater.

It had room to dig.

Jiang laid his beak along living bone.

"No command," he said.

Aylin’s answer traveled along high-root.

"No selection from me."

Raska stepped back from the seam.

"Then I hope our host has a fourth idea."

All three forced paths pulled.

Living bone refused the sky.

It refused the water.

It refused the opened road below.

Living pressure gathered behind Jiang’s keel.

It moved along the carrier’s spine in one heavy turn, passed beneath the keeps, and lifted every road joint on the far side.

All of Bone Orchard tilted.

Maelin’s hall tore free of one roof brace. The last pruning nests slid toward open starwater. High-root snapped tight across the branch seed.

No forced path owned that movement.

The graveback began to roll the road beneath its own body.
