Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 283: Aylin Recognized the Choice That Killed Four People
The red beat pulled Jiang’s beak against the branch seed.
Black glass held him for one ugly heartbeat. The flight collar tightened above his head, and white bone dragged the hot channel toward the open plate.
Jiang tore his beak free.
The split at its tip opened against the glass. Blood vanished into red light before it could cloud the fluid.
High-root moved along his back.
Aylin gave two light pulls, the question they had used since the pruning channel: line clear, body present?
Jiang answered with one pull.
The reply told her he was alive. It did not explain what had found him.
Outside, Raska drove her saw between the flight collar and living plate. Lantern light ran along the teeth.
"It is pulling inward," she called.
"It is pulling outward," Jiang said.
The channel mangled his voice. Raska heard enough to swear.
Another red beat crossed the seed.
Sky-Bone struck first. Dorsal plates lifted beneath the orchard. Tide-Fin swept toward starwater while Deep-Claw held the road.
The branch seed moved closer to the surface.
Living tissue tried to close around it. White collars cut the tissue open again.
"Aylin," Jiang called. "The scars."
Her answer came too late.
Raska heard the delay. "Now would be the part where you know something useful."
"The cuts are made for a selector," Aylin said.
Jiang set both feet against a living rib. Hot fluid pushed past his breast while the flight collar dragged the seed.
"A selector of what?"
"Bodies chosen for them."
Raska’s saw went still.
Only for a breath. The next pull nearly took the tool from her, and she put her weight back on the handle.
"You chose bodies with that?" Jiang asked.
"Not with this scaffold."
"I’m asking what happened to them."
The red light sharpened inside the black glass.
Aylin spoke through the channel while fighters shouted above her.
"My crystal showed a ring around each candidate. The outer cuts belonged to the person opening the crossing. The inner cuts were meant to close after the soul entered."
Jiang looked at the three white collars.
Every outer cut was complete.
Every inner cut stopped at empty glass.
"You closed the outside first," he said.
"Yes. I closed it."
"You answered before they woke?"
Raska’s saw scraped bone. The sound traveled through the branch seed and into Jiang’s beak.
Aylin did not hide behind it.
"I answered before they woke."
Four people had entered bodies already chosen for them. Aylin had called them candidates because the System had used the word and because a useful word could keep guilt at arm’s length.
Jiang pushed harder against the rib.
"Did any of them see the choices?"
"No. None of them."
"Then they were not candidates."
Aylin took that without defending the old word.
"No," she said. "They were people I used as answers."
Anger made Jiang shove away from the seed.
The movement gave the red lantern what it wanted. Black glass slipped closer to the flight collar, and high-root scraped across Jiang’s wounded shoulder.
He forced both feet back against the rib.
"What did you choose for them?"
"Bodies that answered the enemy in front of me."
"Did you ask what they wanted to survive as?"
"No. I decided survival came first and called the rest instruction."
The next red beat pulled hard enough to bend the living rib under Jiang’s feet.
He wanted names, faces, and every answer Aylin had never asked. The branch seed did not care what he deserved to know.
"Later," he said. "Tell me what the hold does now."
The branch seed pulled again.
One of Jiang’s feet slipped. His bad flipper clipped the flight collar, and white pain ran from shoulder to keel.
High-root tightened before he could recover.
Aylin had felt the fall.
"I can bring you out," she said.
"Not through the collar."
"The selector cut has a hold."
Raska looked toward the channel mouth. "A hold sounds delightful."
"It stops the selected body from moving while the crossing is opened."
"The selected body is the graveback," Jiang said.
"Yes. The whole carrier."
Sky-Bone pulled the carrier’s back upward. Bone Orchard lines drew tight above them.
The second keep began to slide.
Raska’s fighters had opened one side. People ran across a black bridge while the far edge peeled from its trunk.
Kessa stood on Maelin’s cracked roof and watched the moving load.
"Everyone already out, cross now!" she shouted. "Everyone still inside, get away from the road side!"
Hest and Valea cleared the hall’s roofline. Sivra ran a cut line from the keep to an empty rib instead of Myrn’s harness.
Myrn stepped beneath the bridge.
She did not catch it yet.
The injured road-beast watched the people crossing and chose where to stand if the branch failed.
Raska saw that too.
"Use the hold," she told Aylin. "One breath. We clear the bridge, pull the bird, and cut your selector line afterward."
"The hold catches all three paths," Aylin said.
"All three are already killing it."
"If they lock under load, the hooks may tear through its spine."
"If they move, my people fall."
Raska’s voice broke on the last word and anger covered the break badly.
Aylin offered no defense.
Jiang wanted her to choose against Raska because it was easier to hate a repeated mistake than to admit the mistake might save people now.
The bridge lost another root.
Myrn moved under it.
People were still crossing.
"Can you hold only the seed?" Jiang asked.
"The old answer did not separate body from path."
"Did you ever ask it to?"
Silence traveled down high-root.
That was answer enough.
White light formed around Jiang’s sight.
[Original selector pattern detected.]
The panel was not asking him.
A pale ring opened around Aylin’s end of high-root. Jiang could feel its shape through the line: four narrow cuts closing around her wrist and one empty space waiting for her voice.
[External selector may freeze host motion. All embedded paths will hold.]
The red lantern inside the seed brightened as if it wanted the same answer.
Armada light and System light did not fight over the graveback. They waited on opposite sides for someone else to decide its body.
"If I use it, your line will pull toward the opening," Aylin said. "Give one hard pull and release if you want the hold ended."
"Even if I am almost out."
"Even if the bridge is falling."
Raska looked up at the people still crossing. "I dislike the completeness of that answer."
"So do I," Aylin said.
Aylin began the old phrase.
"Selected form, hold for crossing."
The pale ring closed around her wrist.
Inside the graveback, Sky-Bone stopped midway through a stroke.
Tide-Fin locked sideways.
Deep-Claw held the road with every joint under strain.
The bridge stopped falling.
Bone Orchard fighters shoved the last people across. Myrn caught the loose end against her shoulder without letting anyone tie it to her.
High-root pulled Jiang toward the surface.
The branch seed opened like a black eye.
Behind its red center, Jiang saw the three collars enter living tissue. None had stopped cutting. The hold had only prevented the carrier from moving away from the pain.
The Armada lantern drove deeper through the frozen flight collar.
If Aylin finished the hold, Jiang could leave.
The seed would reach the surface with him.
He pulled high-root once, hard enough to hurt his coat, then released all resistance.
The signal meant stop.
Aylin’s ring tightened.
For one heartbeat, she kept speaking.
"Selected form, remain where--"
Jiang felt the old answer travel down the line.
Then Aylin bit the word in half.
Natural Essence flared against her wrist. The pale selector ring burned bright enough to show through the marrow channel.
She caught the ring with her free hand and tore.
White cuts opened her palm. Green light ran between her fingers. The old selector line stretched toward the branch seed and snapped.
[Selector link severed.]
The frozen paths released together.
Sky-Bone slammed down.
Tide-Fin whipped through the hot fluid and tore Jiang from the rib.
Deep-Claw ripped a white prong out of road bone.
High-root went loose rather than dragging him through the closing collar.
Aylin had obeyed his stop.
The branch seed surged toward the surface without him.
Jiang caught one living rib with his beak. His feet swung under the fin wash. The failed wing struck pale membrane and folded uselessly against his side.
Raska’s saw hit the black glass from outside.
"The hold ended!" she shouted.
"I noticed the change."
"The seed is coming out."
"Do not let the lantern take it."
"Would you like any other impossible work?"
"Pull only when I signal."
Aylin answered with one light movement on high-root.
She did not apologize through the line. She did not ask whether stopping had repaired anything between them.
Her palm was bleeding around the severed white cuts.
"I stopped," she said.
Jiang found a foot brace against the rib.
"Then keep doing that."
It was not forgiveness.
It was enough trust for the next movement.
Above them, Raska raised her voice across the damaged orchard.
"Detach every keep that can move! Cut the nursery bridges after the last body crosses. Leave the clear fruit. Leave the stored roads. We carry people first."
Bone Orchard fighters hesitated at the order to abandon what remained of their guild’s crown.
Kessa drove Maelin’s blade through the keep line.
"You heard her," she shouted. "This hall takes the living. Nothing grows into my founder wound."
Hest cleared the broken roof. Valea pulled the final family through the wall. Sivra cut Myrn free before the emptied bridge fell behind them.
The branch seed struck Raska’s saw.
Red light burst across the open seam.
One lantern descended through the ruined crown. Then another passed beneath the second keep. More red points appeared beyond the graveback, moving through every reflected road the marrow fruit still held.
They were not coming to kill the host.
They were coming to take it back.
