Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 285: The Beast Chose What the System Never Offered
The road rose through the graveback’s spine.
Jiang felt the movement before Bone Orchard began to fall. Living pressure turned beneath his keel, carried the branch seed with it, and pulled high-root tight enough to crush his coat against the broken collars.
Then the carrier rolled.
Not onto its side.
The road itself folded under the graveback and opened ahead of it. Every joint beneath the wounded body lifted, turned, and laid itself down farther forward.
The graveback moved without wing, fin, or claw.
Bone Orchard went the other way.
Keeps tore from marrow trunks. Pruning nests slid across the crown. The last bridges snapped behind people who had already reached Maelin’s hall or the detached keeps.
High-root cut into Jiang’s side.
Aylin’s injured palm closed around the outer end.
White selector wounds reopened across her skin. Natural Essence held the line, but it could not make the graveback and the guild move together.
"Cut it!" Raska shouted.
Aylin looked toward the living seam where Jiang had vanished.
"He has not released the line."
"The next turn may take him with it."
"Then he decides whether I keep holding."
Raska caught a broken bridge rope before it struck her face.
"I admire the improvement," she said. "I object to the timing."
Inside, Jiang could not answer.
The tightened root had pinned one side of his chest to black glass. Hot marrow fluid drained through the fin wound while cold starwater rushed in behind it.
The change in temperature struck every exposed tear in his coat.
His body tried to seize.
White light opened above the branch seed.
[STARCURRENT KEEL I LOCKED | FULL PHYSICAL REWARMING AND REST NOT MET]
Jiang had no starcurrent to throw him across the flood.
He had one working flipper, two webbed feet that disagreed about strength, and a beak already split past good sense.
That would have to be enough.
He flattened the working flipper against the current and drove it back.
His working stroke rolled him away from black glass. His stronger foot kicked. The unstable leg trailed until the water caught its webbing and dragged it into a crooked rudder.
Jiang slipped out from under high-root.
The line still crossed his back. It no longer pinned his lungs.
The graveback rolled the road again.
The central hook jerked toward the spine.
Red light poured down it from the Armada lanterns. Black glass struck living bone and started to bury itself in a fresh place.
Jiang reached the seed before it seated.
He wedged his split beak beneath the pale hook and held it away from the wound.
The old split opened wider.
Blood entered the starwater around his tongue.
The hook pressed down.
Jiang’s neck shook. His feet found no floor in the flooding channel, and his failed wing hung against his body like something the graveback had already shed.
Living pressure turned beneath the hook.
Jiang did not push it toward sky, water, or road.
He kept the barb from choosing a wound while the graveback chose its own movement.
Above him, the carrier’s dorsal plate began to lift.
The pale hook had grown through that plate. Every Armada pull raised a section of the graveback’s back along with the branch seed.
Raska saw the wound open from outside.
Fresh pruning roots reached for it.
They came from the surviving marrow crown, pale and eager, carrying the Bone Orchard pattern that had held keeps, roads, and riders to the graveback for generations.
One root touched the lifted plate.
Living bone started to close.
A fighter beside Raska caught the root with both hands.
"We can seat it!" he shouted. "Hold the plate, close the spine, and the crown stays with us!"
The graveback’s next road-turn slowed.
The keeps stopped sliding while the fresh graft took hold.
Raska looked across Bone Orchard.
Families crowded Maelin’s open hall. Fighters clung to independent keeps that no longer shared one crown. Clear marrow fruit rolled from split branches and vanished into reflected starwater.
Raska wanted the crown to survive. She wanted those families to wake beneath a roof that still knew their names. The graft in her fighter’s hands could give her exactly that.
Her guild could keep its walking home.
The graveback would keep its hook.
"Raska!" the fighter called.
The pruning root thickened between his hands.
Raska stepped close enough to put her blade against it.
"It carried dead hunters, living fools, and every roof we asked it to bear," she said. "That is already more than it owed us."
She cut the root.
The fighter stared at the severed end.
"All of them," Raska said.
Bone Orchard blades rose wherever roots still held.
Fighters severed every pale strand grown from the guild’s own pattern.
The lifted dorsal plate opened farther.
The detached keeps slid free.
One pruning nest broke against a white flight spar. Another disappeared beneath the turning road. The marrow crown split from front to back, and the homes that remained on it leaned toward the wound.
Raska did not look away.
"Move!" she shouted. "Anyone still on the beast, choose a different roof!"
Kessa stood in Maelin’s doorway with refugees pressed behind her.
"Hest, take the roof brace!"
Hest climbed into the broken rafters and drove his shoulder beneath the dead rib holding the foreign keep.
"Valea, keep the walls from eating our guests!"
Valea cut fresh founder growth as quickly as it appeared.
Across the separating road, Sivra reached for Myrn’s shoulder and stopped before touching.
"The hall will slide past you," she said.
Myrn watched Maelin’s cracked roof.
The road-beast stepped into its path.
She lowered her good side and let the hall strike her.
Stone, dead rib, and living shoulder met with a crack that folded Myrn’s front leg.
Myrn held the weight anyway.
Sivra cut the last branch line trapping the hall to Bone Orchard.
Maelin’s home came free.
It rested against Myrn for one breath, then settled onto an unclaimed road joint beside the detached keeps.
No founder root crossed between them.
No waiting harness closed around her.
Inside the graveback, the dorsal plate lifted high enough for cold air to enter Jiang’s channel.
The branch seed rose with it.
High-root remained looped through the broken collar shards. If the plate tore free now, the line would drag Aylin, Jiang, and the black seed through the same opening.
Aylin held the strain.
Jiang felt her refusal to choose through the unmoving line.
She would not cut early.
She would not save him by deciding when he had become too dangerous to hold.
The Armada lanterns pulled harder.
Red roots gathered around the lifted plate. The white flight spar bent toward the sky. Tide-Fin tore loose beneath it, spilling starwater through the carrier. Deep-Claw ripped a strip of road bone from the spine.
Three imposed paths tried to leave with the hook.
The graveback rolled its living pressure beneath all of them.
Jiang released the pale barb.
He caught high-root across his split beak.
Jiang gave one hard pull.
Then he let the line go.
Aylin cut the line immediately.
Natural Essence flashed green across her bleeding palm. High-root parted outside the wound, snapped through the broken collars, and vanished into the flood.
Jiang had no withdrawal line.
He also had no leash tying him to a choice Aylin had made.
The graveback completed its turn.
Its hooked dorsal plate tore free.
Black glass, white bone, Sky-Bone, Tide-Fin, and Deep-Claw burst out through the ruined crown in one red-lit mass.
Armada lanterns followed the branch seed upward.
The living host rolled beneath them.
Without the dorsal plate, the graveback’s back opened from shoulder to tail. Dark blood flooded the old scaffold wounds. Its road-stride faltered, caught, and continued.
It was not healed.
It was free enough to move.
The open wound emptied Jiang into starwater.
Cold water swallowed him whole.
He sank breast-first, turned with his working flipper, and kicked before the locked System could offer another route.
His unstable leg folded on the first stroke.
Jiang used its webbed foot as a rudder and drove the stronger leg behind him. One good flipper pulled. His keel held the direction his limbs could not.
The falling dorsal plate passed above him.
A white claw spar punched through the water where his head had been. Jiang rolled under it, caught the edge of a broken road joint with his beak, and dragged himself clear.
Maelin’s hall moved across the reflected current.
Kessa saw him surface.
She drove Maelin’s old blade through a roof rope and kicked the loose end over the wall.
The rope struck starwater ahead of Jiang.
A penguin flipper could not close around rope.
He caught it in his beak.
Kessa, Hest, and two Bone Orchard fighters hauled until his breast struck the road joint beneath the hall.
Valea caught his coat behind the neck and pulled him out of the current.
Jiang lay on wet bone with the rope between his beak.
His lungs hurt too much for gratitude.
"He looks pleased," Raska said.
She stood on Myrn’s far side with one boot missing and blood down her cut hand.
Jiang spat out the rope.
"I was waiting for a better rescue."
"We threw the good one away with the house."
Behind Raska, Bone Orchard came apart.
The last shared crown split around the missing dorsal plate. Marrow branches fell across empty roads. Detached keeps drifted around Maelin’s hall without a trunk to join them.
Every surviving voice Raska could hear came from the hall or those separate keeps.
None came from the walking home.
She watched until the final living branch slipped beneath starwater.
The graveback kept moving.
Its wounded back bled across the folded road. Each stride carried it farther from the lanterns and farther from the people who had lived above its spine.
No saddle appeared on its back.
No bond opened between them.
Raska gave no recall.
The carrier reached an unreflected stretch of road, rolled its weight forward, and disappeared beyond the confluence under its own strength.
The System waited until the graveback was gone.
[INDEPENDENT HOST ESCAPE CONFIRMED | EP +1]
[EP TOTAL: 1 | NO EVOLUTION SELECTED]
The point settled in the corner of Jiang’s sight.
His beak still bled. His wing still failed. Cold had reached every torn place the hot channel had opened.
The System had changed one number and nothing else.
Jiang approved of the honesty.
A crash rolled across the confluence.
The shed dorsal plate struck a dead guild road beyond Maelin’s hall. Its three imposed paths lay twisted around the black branch seed.
Armada lanterns hovered above it.
They could no longer reach the graveback.
Red light entered the seed instead.
Black glass beat once.
Six distant roads answered.
Their reflections opened around the confluence.
One carried a horned beast whose gills worked in dry air. Another bent beneath stone wings that had grown inward. A third dragged a serpent’s body on pale borrowed legs.
Jiang could not see the others clearly.
Those first three were enough.
Each wounded creature carried the outline of a black seed.
Each had more than one body forced through the body it already owned.
Red lanterns appeared above all six roads.
Far away, six injured heads turned toward the confluence.
Then the guild roads began drawing them closer.
