Too Late For Regrets: I Sold My Soul To The New Intern
Chapter 99: Rooftop 2
She thought she heard the cackle of thunder but it was too distant. Maybe it was because of the invisible wall, dome or magic cast around her, preventing the rain from pouring on them that made the outside world seem blurry and muffled...it was nauseating to her.
But nothing tops her list of disgust than the monster closing in on her again.
Corrine spun on her heels and stabbed him where it should have hurt the most. She wasn’t as tall as he was to blind his eye like she wanted...but the small stab of his right chest left behind a satisfying feeling. One that made her dark green gaze darker and serious.
She locked eyes with him for a while. The golden blood that slid down her hand and the pen grabbed her attention.
What was this?
A slight crease formed on her forehead and disappeared as she stared down at the little drops of blood that stained her fingers.
Why gold blood? Were his red blood cells that special enough to appear in this color?
Corrine tried not to laugh at her own joke.
He is not human.
She wouldn’t be surprised if his brain were filled with diamonds as well.
She moved the pen deeper, surprised by her strength to even cause this much wound to him with just a pen.
Or maybe she was just fed up with everything and will start her questioning with a bruise. One that will remind him that she was still that Boss that never gave him a chance to bully her no matter how hard he tried.
Yes, she was scared of him and wanted so badly to leave.
But first...
He kept staring at her finger coated with his blood. The delicate hand that tried to harm him...again.
’’And you wonder why I am so in-love with you.’’
His eyes met hers again and she felt so sick she pulled out the pen with all her might. Blood splattered onto the floor as they stepped apart, leaving a small distance between them.
She let go of the pen and stared in horrid disbelief as the wound she gave him on his right chest healed up perfectly and so quickly she hardly noticed when it started.
Just like that moment with him in the bathroom.
Seriously, what was he?
What or who was she dealing with?
A small smile formed on his lips as he noticed her fear.
’’Scared again, Anais?’’
Corrine hated how he always called her by her middle name.
If looks could kill, the serpent should have been on fire by now.
He could feel her hatred and disgust for him all over his body but still he could never bring himself to hate her. It was already too late. He has fallen so deeply.
It was likely he remained stubborn in his pursuit of her or gave up quietly on her and watched her belong somewhere else while he waited for his own doom.
OR
Those golden eyes became predatory and intense. Almost as if he was trying to love her at once and slowly at the same time.
I would make sure there was no one and nothing left for you to love except me.
I can do that to you, Anais.
But I am scared you would hate me instead if I reveal how much I want you.
’’I thought you were going somewhere,’’ he continued as he stood between her and the only exit out of this place. ’’I thought you were leaving to live a life without me in it.’’
His head tilted slowly down at her in amusement, noting her every reaction and response to his words.
’’It’s weird when you come back to the very thing that suffocated you.’’
His eyes flickered briefly to the now healed wound on his right chest and stared at her like she was indeed the most interesting view in his line of sight.
’’I don’t want to believe you suddenly fell in-love with me and realized what you had when I left enough for you to come running back. No, I believe you are more dangerous than that.’’
Oh.
Corrine couldn’t help but respond to his wise words with a slight flicker of her eyebrows.
’’I would believe that your hatred for the cold-blooded worm and mutated freak reached its peak and you have come here to kill me.’’
Corrine’s heart stopped as he caught her off guard once again, blowing her mind into untraceable pieces.
How did he know...?
For a while, they said nothing but glanced at each other. The silence between them is loud and tense enough to still the weather happening outside of their little bubble.
’’If killing me is what you desire Anais, you could have just said that earlier.’’
What?!
Was he out of his mind?
’’I would have given you a proper weapon to kill a monster like me.’’
He said so with so much sadness it overwhelmed her and swallowed everything they endured with them. All the while, his eyes never left hers. Not even for a split second. He watched her like she was the last thing he will ever get to see before he...
’’It’s just unfortunate that no weapon could easily take me down.’’
She stared at him because he was the weirdest and most disturbing thing she has ever encountered in her life!
’’So, be patient. This desire of yours would soon be fulfilled.’’
If she said she understood the nonsense he told her so freely and without any filter, she would just be lying to herself.
’’Why did you return to me?’’
His voice softened. One that stirred something unexplainable within her. The one that once pitied him but at the same time...
’’Just to cause me more pain or...’’
Corrine comported herself and he watched as she threw the bloodied pen away as if disgusted to be in more contact with his blood or any part of him.
He watched her silently, enduring the pain it came to see how she rejected him each time their eyes met or how her body moved feeling repulsed by being in the same space as he was.
’’I came back because there are things that don’t make sense to me.’’
He said nothing. It was her turn to speak and his to listen.
’’And I feared I wouldn’t be at peace if I left without making several things about you and your actions towards me clearer if I had just left.’’
She expected him to say something...anything. But surprisingly, he was just calm with that obedient and innocent look he had once deceived her with many times in her previous life.
’’Don’t get it wrong, I didn’t return just to remain a prisoner of your sick obsessions or fantasy. Neither do I pity you or feel any other thing apart from the urgency to be far away from you. As far as the north is to the south.’’
He smiled, the pain burning in his eyes as he remained calm and just listened to whatever she had to say.
’’All that I said to you hours ago remains,’’ she stressed. ’’And I honestly do not want a life with you in it, haunting every part of it and making it more...distrubing or...’’
He thought she didn’t have the guts to finish her sentence until she surprised him with another hurtful word.
’’Hard to live.’’
The rain reduced to mere drops above as she stared at him with a venom much more dangerous than his; he wondered why it was so hard to gain the least favour in her eyes.
He could understand and accept why every other being would find it hard to genuinely like him because of what he was...but it was different with her.
As if she would still choose to dislike him even if there were a thousand reasons not to.
She looked so guarded and determined not to even give him the slightest entry into her heart no matter what.
It baffled him so much as well as it saddens him.
For a moment, he wanted to accept that being loved or appreciated by her would be impossible. If it were possible, the road to that possibility would be a long and exhausting one. One that would have ruined them both the farther they go.
All thoughts and pain in him dulled when she asked her first question.
’’If, I assume, your goal was to come here and find love,’’ she said as her eyes moved on in, looking tense the more she arrived at her question.
’’Why me?’’
His silence told her the question wasn’t one that demanded a direct reply.
’’Or should I say, what about me gave you the impression that I am the right person to haunt to be loved in return?’’
