Too Late For Regrets: I Sold My Soul To The New Intern
Chapter 100: Rooftop 3
Her question was a good one.
Grim’s mind raced through so many possible answers to that.
Unfortunately, the question didn’t have one specific answer to it.
What was he supposed to say to her?
He was a loveless being hated by his parents and basically everything that lives and breathes? He was punished for centuries for insubordination then sent to earth to live with the other demons with a mortal body that fails to protect him at times in the face of serious danger and he was here to find love and be loved in return so as to be free from some stupid punishment?
He met a weird child one day and they met coincidentally. She ignored him and he thought she was just like one of those women who sometimes play hard to get.
He thought he would be over her rudeness in minutes...no seconds and move on with his life until he found himself helplessly at her doorstep each day begging for her affection?
His sudden obsession with her seemed suspicious, almost too strange to be true.
He felt like he had been charmed by the way she stared at him, that vicious ’’get lost look’’ he would never forget in multiple lifetimes.
Grim found himself smiling as he remembered that look. If it were possible to relive a moment, he would choose that very day and moment to get to meet with her again.
Then the smile softened the more as his eyes wandered over her in genuine sympathy.
Maybe, he would have approached her in a different and less carefree way. He would have made a much more solid impression that day. Get her to never forget about him after that fated meeting that night.
And maybe...find the cure to that illness she had that day and stick close enough to fight her battles along with her. Maybe then, he wouldn’t have to go through the painful moment of watching her sleep in his arms without warmth or breath in her lungs.
Grim felt a certain surge of emotions rush through him. It made his shoulder rise and fall. Tears stung at the corner of his eyes.
He never wants to go through that horrible moment ever again.
That’s why in this life, he has to be extra careful, ten times more protective of her than before...if possible, get rid of every fly or ant that might cause her the slightest discomfort so that painful moment of his life would never have the chance to repeat itself again.
’’Why not you?’’
He pushed back, catching her off guard with his question.
Sincerely, he thought the reason why he just wanted to be with her forever and under the strong delusion that one day she would finally get to understand his feelings and accept him, if not as a lover but as a close companion, a family she could always lean on and trust was because she was different from the lovers or women he has had in his past.
She didn’t look at him with contempt and the only thing keeping her high status in check like his mother.
She didn’t once stare at him with lust or other fetish desires or cunning looks.
Hell, she probably wondered what was so good about him that the whole world couldn’t stop admiring him with parted looks.
She was the kind who wasn’t easily swayed by physical appearance, money, status or position.
Hell, she couldn’t even be won over by good manners or proper behavior.
Which only means...having such a person by your side and getting them to fall-in-love with you was probably going to be the hardest and best feeling yet to exist.
And he wants that feeling.
He wants her and nothing else.
’’What?’’
A small smirk formed on his lips before he closed the gap between them with a small step. Anais being...well, Anais took a step back as she overthought why he was suddenly getting close to her.
Then he said again, genuinely this time as he wanted to understand why she even bothered about such a question.
’’Why...not...you?’’
It was Corrine’s turn to be bewildered. Her eyes lowered enough for her to think about it. To ask herself the same question.
Why can’t she be the one that would be chased endlessly by the most perfect and beautiful being in the world ... .the one with the might and authority to end all of life if he decides to.
Her lips parted slowly as she could not find one reason why it could be her.
’’Well...’’
Henry said he was the only one capable of even looking at me with desire.
Even my father said I wasn’t built for the foolishness of love or romance.
I was fashioned to be queen.
To dominate the world and rule like a super power should.
Henry also said...
He noticed how her eyes flickered back and fought and saw the struggle within her in her eyes. He wished he could understand that struggle more and make her understand that it could only be her that could make him do certain things. To meet with certain people and plead for their help...something he never imagined himself doing and even make deals with the enemies above.
Grim sighed softly, before gently wiping the tears that rolled down her cheeks. Anais looked up at him, his touch bringing so much security and comfort...it overwhelmed her.
’’Silly girl,’’ he began as he removed his hand from her face. ’’Of course, it has to be you. I doubt there is another girl out there as pretty as you. ’’
’’And even if there were,’’ he began, freely conveying his thoughts as he unknowingly tore down the walls surrounding her heart brick by brick.
She watched as those golden eyes of his flicker about in amusement. He was so beautiful when he was like that.
Corrine found herself staring at him without even meaning to.
’’I doubt there will be anyone like you to stab me in the neck and chest in the same week, call me a pervert and a slime in one sentence. Have me rewrite close to four hundred and thirty five pages of paper work in a day, threaten to have me rot in the cells forever for misbehavior...’’
He leaned close enough to meet her gaze. His face filled with adoration, it was blinding to see as well as overwhelming.
’’I doubt there will be anyone I will care so much about to bring back to life and promise to give her the best life she deserves and even more.’’
There it was again.
He wants to give her a good life this time.
What makes him think she never had a good life in the previous life?
’’Why..?’’ She found herself saying through suppressed tears and emotions. Her eyes were so glossy, her nose became wet in minutes and she hated how honest or blunt he was with words and all. It terrified her to think maybe...maybe truly someone else apart from her first love could find her truly desirable enough to be this persistent with her.
One of his eyebrows arched in confusion.
And Corrine decided to be even more direct this time.
’’I mean, why...’’ she tried not to cry, it felt too much and she wondered why she was getting this emotional all of a sudden. It was embarrassing and...not like her.
’’Why did you bring me back to life and why do you want to give me a better life this time?’’
Then he stared at her long enough to fall in love with her more.
’’Would you believe it if I told you the truth?’’
Corrine stared at him for a while. Her heart racing as her mind tried to figure out why on its own but failed. And it made her anxious...no, scared to hear the truth.
She opened her mouth to say otherwise.
’’Because I like you, Anais.’’
Corrine was too shocked and air refused to make its solitary journey down her airways. But then again, she dismissed it with a nervous smile and tried to avoid it.
To say something else that would make him think otherwise or perhaps stop him from messing with her.
’’You can’t expect me to believe—-’’ She began with hot tears burning in her eyes and a deep aching settled in her chest as she grew uncomfortable by his confession.
’’No. I am in love with you.’’
