’’Anarak, where is my daughter?’’

Anarak tensed a bit and answered immediately, ’’The conclusion of our thorough investigation at the place she was last seen indeed confirmed that Miss Ashworth died.’’

A lean figure sitting in the darkest corner of the office space moved in his seat. The sound of heavy rain was muffled as the king of this world stood beside one of the see-through walls in deep thoughts, His dark grey eyes remained fixed on the world below as if it were possible to find her current hiding spot from him.

’’We used our blood and performed several rituals on that spot. The unclouded artifact was used multiples times across several areas.’’

Thunder rumbled slowly.

Neal Ashworth didn’t blink.

’’Miss Ashworth indeed fell to her death but for some reasons, that moment had been erased or should I put it this way, swept under the rug, with the memory of that moment destroyed and replaced with this current reality.’’

The figure hiding in the shadows blinked.

Who could be powerful enough to do something like that?

Freeze time and cause a major shift and change in reality and in this world for the sake of someone.

Neal’s eyes turned into slits, burning through the thin glass walls of his office at the thought of that silly child choosing death instead of returning home.

His gaze hardened, mouth upturned in irritation.

If you are this weak and fragile at heart, then you are not worthy of being called my daughter.

Grey eyes that resembled the bottomless pit flickered about.

You are not one that could be fashioned perfectly to be the next best enemy of mankind.

His heart ached in regret at his failure to produce a capable offspring to continue with their long-standing mission here on earth.

He should have had a son instead.

At least, he would be much easier to control and listen to his father.

His ego would be too great to settle for less and live as a beggar on the street. Chasing after a worthless dream when he could have everything by just being obedient, submissive and understanding.

His lips pressed together in anger. An ugly frown settling on his flawless features. The more he thought about it, the more he wished he had listened to his instincts earlier on to kill her at birth and try again for a boy.

But he was deceived by the notion of a girl child having a stronger emotional connection to her parents no matter what.

Sadly, it felt like God was intentional about giving him the worst kind of heiress. One that doesn’t have the slightest sense for greater things and has foolishly welcomed a demon—oh, no.

Neal’s anger crossed all bars and limits and for a moment he thought of creating the worst and most disastrous storm ever to soothe his anger.

She welcomed an abandoned seed of the devil into her life and is fooling around with it.

Neal’s chest rose and fell.

The weather intensified with his mood.

The figure sitting in the dark scoffed.

’’To think the son of the devil was capable of bringing the dead back to life amuses me.’’

’’It shows how benevolent the worst kind of monsters ever created could be.’’

’’And even to my precious niece.’’

Neal turned from the walls to stare at his loyal hell hound. He looked tired and disturbed. He didn’t know it would take forever to hunt a daughter who had rebelled three years ago and get her to accept her life here with him instead of chasing after a dead dream.

Lyzer placed one leg over the other, his back leaning more on the soft leather chair as the entire room was once again drowned in silence.

’’Where is she hiding now?’’

Anarak, the demon with the blindfold moved his lips against each other before answering, ’’Her exact location can’t be properly traced at the moment. But we have our suspicions of the forbidden fruit being involved in her disappearance.’’

Lyzer shook his head.

Neal’s disgust deepened.

’’We are currently tracking down one of her closest employees. And we have been led twice to the doorstep of the demons tower.’’

Lyzer’s eyebrow moved in interest.

’’We suspect that the forbidden fruit is currently hiding her there.’’

’’There is a limit to where my angels could freely explore the grounds of the demon tower. So, based on everything we’ve gathered and discussed on, Miss Corrine Ashworth is probably in there since her rebirth, Your Supreme.’’

Lyzer scoffed out loud.

’’Wow. My niece is indeed something. Not only does she have the forbidden fruit completely under her control but she has an entire tower of demons backing her up!’’

Neal moved and one glare was enough to shut his brother up.

Lyzer stirred uncomfortably in his seat as Neal slowly turned from him to quietly understand the current situation.

’’That should be the least of our concerns, Lyzer.’’ Neal scolded in his demonic voice.

Lyzer’s eyes followed his brother’s slow movements towards his seat behind the large, executive table. The supreme logo of the reptilian order on earth glowing in the dark behind his throne.

Neal settled before it. His hands crossed on the smooth surface of the table as he leaned forward. His eyes are cold as ice and face hard with resentment.

Lyzer stood from his seat and moved from the shadows to stand beside Anarak.

The tension in the room rising as the devil himself, for the first time in a long while looked genuinely distraught by something.

’’I almost lost the sole heir to our long mission here on earth. She is currently being held captive by the worm of eden in a colony of demons who think they are better than us.’’

Lyzer stood straight, his hands folded before him as he stared at his brother for a solution.

’’Our plan to get her back home had failed.’’

He said as if the very thought of it was the sole cause of his discomfort. If he had the opportunity to, he could strike down a mortal or start an all-consuming fire that will burn all wildlife.

’’It failed and instead made us the target of something much worse.’’

Lyzer’s brow furrowed in slight confusion. His doctor’s cloth neat and well-pressed on him as he gazed at his brother.

What does he mean by them being targeted now?

Who?

The forbidden fruit being after them for something that shouldn’t have been his business in the first place...unless...

Lyzer didn’t dare to think about it.

Hell, he might drop dead before his brother if he speaks about it.

Neal then moved to stare seriously at the space between Lyzer and Anarak.

The demon with the blindfold listened quietly.

His soft pink lips rubbing against each other slowly as he prepared himself for his next mission.

’’What I hate the most after peace and love is a disastrous plan with the potential to backfire heavily on me.’’

Lyzer opened his mouth to speak.

’’Brother, you are being unreasonable now and unnecessarily paranoid over something that can barely even face its own enemies and get rid of them.’’

Neal blinked and turned to his brother who made him feel as though he was overthinking things.

Neal wanted to strike him dead right there.

Can you really be overthinking things when your daughter died and returned to life and is in active league with a being no one knew he was capable of raising the dead until a few days ago.

Neal wondered how he got so jinxed to have a very short sighted brother placed beside him to ruin a society completely.

A brother with terrible ideas and schemes and no use to their mission to kill and destroy.

But Lyzer was very confident that the forbidden fruit cannot be a problem for them now or in the near future no matter what.

’’I doubt that beast even cares about any other thing than to groom our heir and use her for his own selfish reasons and desires. One we wouldn’t allow because our Anais is a precious asset to our mission.’’

Anarak’s ears twitched in response. The quiet demon having his own objections to that but decided it was best he kept his mouth shut or he could be the next monthly sacrifice of worship to the devil.

’’He would eventually get over her and move on. A mere forbidden fruit from Eden shouldn’t bother us this much.’’

Neal considered it even when he still had his doubts.

’’He was nothing when we conquered civilizations and ruined entire generations of mankind over the years and served his father well.’’

’’Where was he when the angels rebelled and we were there to cause their fall and the flood that almost ended the early human race?’’

Neal stared at Lyzer once again. His eyes bore deeper into his brother’s desperate ones to land a point that they were no match against something that existed long before their achievements and victories against mankind and the divine beings.

’’I know. He was probably somewhere in a hole, all curled up and scared, feeling abandoned by everyone as his greatest nemesis ever hunted him down nonstop at every corner of the earth.’’

The temperature dropped significantly at Lyzer’s next word. Even the quiet and hardly responsive Anarak moved enough to stare at the overlord through his blindfold.

Neal picked up a pen and stared down at the table in thoughts while scribbling a set of words on paper.

It felt like Lyzer had just said the most terrible thing unimaginable. But the doctor wasn’t done yet.

He straightened his lab coat and said without fear.

’’Eve.’’

He mentioned as if that name didn’t cause his spine to tremble and his mouth to dry up like the desert. That name made his heart race and skip a few beats.

It made Anarak even nervous. A trickle of sweat appeared at the side of his fine figure.

Neal said nothing and he looked the most calm underneath the tension and ill luck that name brought whenever it was said among the demons.

’’If that worm of Eden runs each time he hears that name,’’ Lyzer’s lips eased into a cruel smirk of amusement.

’’What makes you think he has that much confidence to take down an entire colony of reptilians and other powerful shapeshifters like us?’’

Neal continued his silent scribbling. Writing the name of the first woman crazy enough to become Adam’s ruin and the undefeated enemy of the divine beings.

Her name alone brought more fear and respect to the world of demons than the devil himself.

Eve.

A mere rib of Adam who became the enemy of everyone but herself.

’’What we should be the most concerned about is how we are going to get Anais out of that place and force her back on the right path.’’
