The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 32: The False King

  • Next Chapter

The road to the Royal Warfront was covered in ash.

Ethan Vale walked at the front of the group, his black coat moving with every step. The City of Ash had disappeared behind them, swallowed by the white light of the Observer.

Only a thin gray horizon remained where the ancient capital had once stood.

Noah Blake walked beside Ethan, carrying a backpack filled with supplies.

He glanced over his shoulder.

"Are we being followed?"

"Yes."

Noah stopped.

Ethan continued walking.

"By how many?"

"Twenty-three soldiers."

"Twenty-three?"

"They have been following us since the second hill."

Noah looked back again.

"I did not see anyone."

"That is because they are trying to remain hidden."

"Are they good at it?"

"No."

Noah sighed.

"Why did you not say anything?"

"I was waiting to see how long they would continue pretending."

Behind them, branches moved.

A group of soldiers stepped onto the road.

They wore the silver armor of the Royal Army. Their weapons were drawn, but none of them attacked.

At the front stood a young captain with a red cloak.

He looked nervous.

Ethan stopped.

The captain raised his sword.

"Ethan Vale."

"Yes."

"You are under arrest by order of the Royal Council."

Noah looked at Ethan.

"You announced your identity less than a day ago."

"I am aware."

The captain swallowed.

"You are accused of attempting to seize the ancient fragments, attacking the Royal Palace, manipulating the Fifth Fragment, and preparing to reopen the First Door."

"I did not attack the palace."

"You entered it during a magical emergency."

"I saved the princess."

"You used forbidden magic."

"I stopped Cassian."

"You were seen carrying the Fourth Fragment."

"I am carrying it now."

The captain’s eyes moved toward the black mark on Ethan’s wrist.

Fear appeared in his expression.

Behind Ethan, Elena Frost stepped forward.

"Captain, stand down."

The captain looked at her.

"Lady Elena, you are ordered to return to House Frost."

"My family has no authority over me."

"You are carrying a bloodline seal connected to the Sixth Fragment."

"It was severed."

"We have no proof."

"You have no authority to detain us."

The captain’s soldiers tightened their formation.

Professor Aurelia Voss stepped between them.

"Do not make this worse."

The captain looked at her.

"Professor Voss, the Royal Council believes Ethan Vale is responsible for the instability spreading across the continent."

"That is false."

"Then why are the Mana Cores awakening?"

"Because the Observer is manipulating the magical network."

The captain’s expression remained uncertain.

"And you expect us to believe that?"

"No," Voss said. "I expect you to understand that attacking us will make the situation worse."

The captain raised his sword.

A red symbol appeared in the sky above the road.

The Eighth Fragment.

The moment it appeared, anger spread through the soldiers.

Their fear turned into certainty.

Ethan felt the change.

The fragment was influencing them.

The soldiers no longer saw him as a person.

They saw an enemy.

The captain shouted:

"Take him!"

The soldiers attacked.

Ethan moved before they reached him.

The Crown Fragment responded.

He could have commanded them to stop.

The old authority remained within him.

But he refused to use it.

Instead, he drew the Sword Fragment.

A black blade formed in his hand.

He struck the ground.

A line of darkness spread across the road.

The soldiers stopped just before crossing it.

The boundary did not attack them.

It simply forced them to recognize the distance between choice and obedience.

The captain struggled to move.

"What did you do?"

"I gave you a moment to think."

The red symbol above them pulsed.

The captain’s eyes turned crimson.

He raised his sword again.

"I will not be controlled!"

He stepped across the black line.

The Eighth Fragment responded.

The captain’s armor exploded with red light.

His body grew larger.

A crown of bone formed around his head.

The soldiers behind him fell to their knees.

The captain looked at Ethan.

"You are the false king."

His voice was no longer his own.

"You have returned to reclaim your throne."

Ethan stared at him.

The voice belonged to the copy.

The false version of himself.

Noah moved closer.

"Do you know him?"

"I know what he is."

The captain raised his sword.

"He is the part of you that you buried."

A red spear formed in his hand.

"Your hunger."

He attacked.

Ethan blocked the strike.

The impact sent him sliding backward.

The false king was stronger than the captain had any right to be.

Every movement carried the authority of war.

The more conflict existed around him, the stronger he became.

Ethan looked at the soldiers.

They were still trapped inside the red influence.

Their fear and anger were feeding the fragment.

If he fought the captain directly, the fragment would continue growing.

Elena raised her sword.

"Ethan!"

He moved aside.

A wall of ice appeared between him and the captain.

The red spear pierced through it.

Elena created a second wall.

Then a third.

The false king shattered all of them.

Adrian attacked from the side.

His golden sword struck the captain’s armor.

The blow forced him to turn.

Noah threw his knife.

It hit the red crown.

The false king froze.

The crown cracked.

Noah stared.

"Again?"

"The knife carries recognition," Ethan said.

"Then I would like to officially upgrade its status."

The false king pulled the knife from the crown.

He looked at Noah.

"You are insignificant."

Noah’s expression changed.

The false king threw the knife aside.

"You are weak."

Noah moved toward the weapon.

"You are afraid."

The red light around the captain intensified.

"You are only useful because Ethan allows you to remain near him."

Noah stopped.

Ethan saw the fragment’s method.

It did not simply create anger.

It chose the words most likely to divide them.

The false king turned toward Elena.

"She will betray him."

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

"She is already connected to Veyron."

"Her bloodline belongs to the enemy."

The false king looked at Adrian.

"Your ancestor murdered Ethan’s army."

Adrian tightened his grip.

Then the false king faced Professor Voss.

"You will die protecting students who will forget your name."

The red crown burned brighter.

Every accusation strengthened it.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Stop listening to him."

The false king smiled.

"You recognize me."

"I recognize the lies."

"You recognize the truth."

"You are not truth."

The red spear pointed toward Ethan.

"I am what you became when you stopped caring whether people survived."

Ethan remembered the black throne.

The armies.

The cities.

The people who had knelt because they were afraid.

The false king was not an illusion.

He was a fragment of Ethan’s identity, separated by the Seventh Fragment.

The part of him that still believed fear was more reliable than trust.

"You are the Crown without responsibility," Ethan said.

The false king’s smile disappeared.

"You are the Crown without a throne."

Ethan raised his black sword.

The two blades collided.

Red and black energy exploded across the road.

The soldiers were thrown backward.

The trees on either side of the path shattered.

Ethan felt the Eighth Fragment feeding on the battle.

Every strike made the false king stronger.

Every defensive move gave him more authority.

Ethan could not win by fighting.

He needed to end the conflict.

He lowered his sword.

The false king attacked.

The red spear pierced Ethan’s shoulder.

Blood ran down his arm.

Noah shouted.

"Ethan!"

Ethan did not move.

The false king pulled the spear free.

"You cannot defeat war by refusing to fight."

"I am not refusing."

Ethan looked at him.

"I am refusing to fight you."

The false king hesitated.

The Eighth Fragment pulsed.

The red crown began to crack.

Ethan stepped closer.

"You are part of me."

The false king’s eyes narrowed.

"I am the part you abandoned."

"Yes."

"I am the king you buried."

"Yes."

"I am the one who would have won."

Ethan placed his hand against the false king’s chest.

The Crown Fragment responded.

Not with command.

With recognition.

"You are the part of me that believed victory mattered more than the people being saved."

The false king raised his spear.

"You need me."

"I know."

"Without me, you are weak."

"I know."

"You will hesitate."

"I know."

"You will lose."

Ethan looked into his own eyes.

"Then I will lose as Ethan."

The red crown cracked again.

The false king stepped backward.

"You cannot reject me."

"I am not rejecting you."

Ethan grabbed the red crown.

"I am taking responsibility for you."

The false king screamed.

The Eighth Fragment exploded.

A wave of red energy spread across the road.

The soldiers collapsed.

The captain’s body returned to normal.

The red crown broke into pieces and entered Ethan’s chest.

The black sword disappeared.

The red symbol above the road shattered.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Ethan fell to one knee.

Elena rushed toward him.

"Are you hurt?"

"Yes."

"Badly?"

"Yes."

"That is not helpful."

"I am alive."

Noah picked up his knife.

He examined the blade.

"It is still intact."

Ethan looked at him.

"You care more about the knife than your own injuries."

"It has saved reality twice."

"Three times," Professor Voss said.

Noah looked at her.

"See? It deserves respect."

The Royal soldiers began to rise.

The captain looked around, confused.

He stared at Ethan.

"What happened?"

"The fragment used you."

The captain looked at the red mark fading from his armor.

"I attacked you."

"Yes."

"Why am I alive?"

Ethan stood.

"Because you were not the enemy."

The captain lowered his sword.

"What is happening at the warfront?"

"The armies are being manipulated."

"By whom?"

Ethan looked toward the east.

"By a false version of me."

The captain’s expression became pale.

"The reports said you were leading an army."

"I am not."

"Then who is?"

Ethan did not answer.

He could still feel the Eighth Fragment inside his soul.

Unlike the other fragments, it did not become quiet after being absorbed.

It remained angry.

Not hostile.

Angry.

It carried every conflict Ethan had ever caused.

Every war he had started.

Every soldier he had sent to die.

The fragment was not a weapon.

It was a record of consequences.

Professor Voss stepped closer.

"What will you do with it?"

"Control it."

"You already said that about the Crown."

"I was wrong."

The red mark on Ethan’s wrist pulsed.

The Eighth Fragment showed him a vision.

The Royal Warfront.

Thousands of soldiers gathered beneath a crimson sky.

At the center stood the false king.

But he was no longer alone.

Behind him were seven figures.

One wore a crown of black metal.

One carried a white flame.

One was formed from ice.

One stood inside a golden prison.

One had no face.

The remaining two were hidden beneath shadows.

The false king raised his sword.

The armies knelt.

A voice echoed across the battlefield:

"The real Ethan Vale is approaching."

The soldiers turned toward the eastern road.

"Kill him."

The vision disappeared.

Elena looked at Ethan.

"You saw something."

"The warfront is ready."

"How long do we have?"

"Not long."

The captain stepped forward.

"Allow us to accompany you."

Ethan looked at the soldiers.

They had been used by the fragment.

They were still frightened, but they were no longer under its control.

"Why?"

The captain lowered his sword.

"Because my men followed an order without questioning it."

He looked toward the east.

"We will not do that again."

Ethan studied him.

"What is your name?"

"Captain Rowan Hale."

"Captain Hale, your soldiers are free to return to the capital."

Rowan shook his head.

"We are coming."

"This is not a request for obedience."

"I know."

"Then why?"

"Because if the warfront is truly being manipulated, the Royal Army must see the truth before it attacks."

Ethan glanced toward Professor Voss.

She nodded slowly.

"He is right. A group of trained soldiers may be useful."

Noah whispered:

"That is the polite way of saying we need more people between us and the arrows."

Ethan ignored him.

"Very well."

Captain Rowan ordered his soldiers to disarm their weapons.

They continued east.

The road became wider as they approached the warfront.

The ash beneath their feet turned red.

The sky grew darker.

The air smelled of iron.

At sunset, they reached the top of a long hill.

The Royal Warfront spread across the valley below.

Thousands of tents covered the plains.

Black smoke rose from siege engines.

Royal banners stood beside the flags of seven kingdoms.

An enormous wall divided the battlefield.

On the opposite side, another army waited.

At the center of the valley stood a black throne.

The false king sat upon it.

He wore a crown made from red bone.

His face was Ethan’s.

His eyes were violet.

But unlike the Identity Fragment, this version of Ethan looked complete.

He had the confidence of Azeroth.

The cruelty of Darius.

The authority of the Crown.

And the power of the Eighth Fragment.

Beside him stood a woman with silver hair.

Ethan recognized her.

Marianne Frost.

Her body was covered in black ice.

A red symbol burned over her heart.

Elena stopped breathing.

"My grandmother."

The false king placed one hand on Marianne’s shoulder.

The army behind him raised its weapons.

Then the false king looked toward the hill.

His gaze found Ethan immediately.

He smiled.

"So you finally came."

The words carried across the entire valley.

The soldiers below turned.

Thousands of eyes fixed on Ethan.

The false king stood from the throne.

"You have taken everything from me."

Ethan looked down at the battlefield.

"No."

"You stole my identity."

"You were never my identity."

"You buried me."

"I accepted you."

The false king raised his hand.

The armies began to march.

"Then prove it."

The red sky opened above the warfront.

The Eighth Fragment awakened completely.

The false king pointed toward Ethan.

"Choose, Ethan Vale."

The soldiers charged up the hill.

"Become me again..."

The red crown flared.

"...or watch everyone who follows you die."

The war had begun.
