The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 33: The Warfront
The soldiers charged up the hill.
Thousands of feet shook the ground.
Steel clashed against steel.
The red sky above the Royal Warfront burned brighter as the Eighth Fragment fed on the growing conflict.
Ethan Vale stood at the top of the hill, watching the army approach.
Behind him were Noah, Elena, Adrian, Professor Voss, Veyron, Captain Rowan Hale, and the remaining Royal soldiers.
In the valley below, the false king sat upon the black throne.
Marianne Frost stood beside him, trapped inside a shell of black ice.
Elena raised her sword.
"Release my grandmother!"
The false king smiled.
"You still believe she is a prisoner."
The black ice around Marianne moved.
Her eyes turned crimson.
"She came willingly."
Elena’s face changed.
"That is a lie."
Marianne looked toward her.
For one brief moment, the red light faded from her eyes.
"Do not trust—"
The false king tightened his hand.
The black ice covered her mouth.
Then the crimson light returned.
"See?" he said. "Even now, she chooses my side."
Elena stepped forward.
The first wave of soldiers reached the hill.
Professor Aurelia Voss raised her staff.
A red barrier appeared before them.
The Royal soldiers crashed against it.
The impact shook the ground.
Professor Voss gritted her teeth.
"They are not fighting normally!"
Ethan looked at the attacking soldiers.
Their movements were too coordinated.
They did not react to pain.
They did not hesitate.
Red threads connected their Mana Cores to the Eighth Fragment.
The fragment was not controlling their minds directly.
It was synchronizing their anger.
Every soldier believed the person beside him was fighting for the same reason.
That made the army stronger.
Ethan drew the black sword.
The blade appeared with a red line running through its center.
The Eighth Fragment responded to the conflict around him.
It wanted him to fight.
It wanted him to become the center of the war.
The Crown whispered inside his soul.
**Command them.**
The Sword responded.
**Pay the price.**
The Witness showed him the battlefield.
The Knowledge Fragment revealed the red threads.
Ethan understood the structure.
If he cut the soldiers’ connections one by one, the Eighth Fragment would simply create new ones.
If he destroyed the false king, the army would collapse into chaos and thousands would die.
If he commanded the soldiers to stop, he would become the kind of ruler he had promised never to be.
There was no clean solution.
The barrier cracked.
Captain Rowan raised his sword.
"Give the order!"
Ethan looked at him.
"Evacuate the wounded."
"What about the attackers?"
"Do not kill them unless necessary."
Rowan stared.
"They will kill us."
"Then stop them without destroying them."
"That is impossible in a battle this size."
Ethan looked toward the red crown in the valley.
"Not impossible."
He stepped through Professor Voss’s barrier.
The first soldier swung a sword at his head.
Ethan caught the blade with the black sword.
He did not strike the soldier.
He placed his free hand against the man’s chest.
The Eighth Fragment’s red thread became visible.
Ethan cut it.
The soldier collapsed.
The red light left his eyes.
He looked around in confusion.
"What happened?"
"You were being used."
"By whom?"
Ethan pointed toward the valley.
The soldier looked at the false king.
Then horror spread across his face.
"He is our commander."
"He is not your king."
The soldier lowered his weapon.
Another attacker reached Ethan.
Ethan cut the red thread.
Then another.
Then another.
Each soldier stopped fighting.
The wave behind them continued forward.
Ethan could not reach them all.
Elena joined him.
Ice spread across the ground beneath the soldiers’ feet, trapping them without piercing their bodies.
Adrian moved through the frozen formation, striking weapons from their hands.
Noah ran between them, collecting fallen blades.
"Why are we not killing them?" he shouted.
"Because they are victims!" Elena replied.
"Could someone tell the victims to stop trying to stab us?"
Professor Voss expanded the barrier, creating a safe area for the disarmed soldiers.
Captain Rowan directed them toward it.
The hill became a battlefield of frozen weapons and confused soldiers.
But the red sky grew darker.
The false king watched from below.
The more Ethan separated from the conflict, the more the Eighth Fragment resisted.
Red lightning struck the ground.
A wave of force knocked Ethan backward.
He landed beside Elena.
The false king raised his hand.
Every soldier whose red thread had been cut stood up again.
Their eyes turned crimson.
The severed threads reconnected.
Ethan’s expression hardened.
"He can restore the connection."
Elena raised another wall of ice.
"How do we stop him?"
"We must cut the source."
"The false king?"
"No."
Ethan looked at the red crown floating above the throne.
"The Eighth Fragment."
The false king heard him.
"You cannot cut what you are."
"I can separate it."
"You tried that once."
"It did not work."
"Because I am not a fragment of your power."
The false king stood.
"I am your truth."
The red crown descended onto his head.
The valley shook.
His body changed.
Black armor covered his chest.
A long red cloak appeared behind him.
The false king now looked exactly like the version of Azeroth recorded in history.
The tyrant.
The conqueror.
The Black Sovereign.
The soldiers below him knelt.
"Look at them," he said.
"They obey because they understand strength."
"They obey because they are afraid."
"Fear keeps people alive."
"Fear keeps them obedient."
"That is the same thing."
Ethan looked toward Marianne.
The black ice around her was spreading.
The red symbol over her heart had become brighter.
The false king was using her bloodline to amplify the Eighth Fragment.
Elena saw it too.
"We have to free her."
"Yes."
"Then we go together."
Ethan looked at her.
"No."
Elena’s eyes hardened.
"Do not start."
"The red crown is using conflict. If we attack together, it will feed on us."
"Then what do you suggest?"
"I draw its attention."
"And I free my grandmother."
"That is dangerous."
"So is everything you suggest."
Noah stepped between them.
"For once, I agree with Elena."
Ethan looked at him.
"You are not part of this plan."
"I am now."
"Why?"
Noah held up his knife.
"Because this thing keeps talking about identity, truth, and power. It has not yet considered the possibility of being stabbed by someone it considers insignificant."
The false king’s voice echoed from below.
"Come, Ethan."
He lifted his sword.
"Show them which one of us deserves to live."
Ethan stepped forward.
The black sword in his hand turned red.
The Eighth Fragment responded to his challenge.
The red threads around the battlefield pulled toward him.
Thousands of soldiers turned their weapons in Ethan’s direction.
The false king smiled.
"Good."
Ethan looked at the people behind him.
"Stay here."
Elena shook her head.
"I am freeing Marianne."
"Wait for my signal."
"You do not give orders."
"I am asking."
Elena studied him.
Then she nodded.
Ethan descended the hill alone.
The soldiers parted to let him pass.
The false king waited at the bottom, surrounded by red light.
The distance between them disappeared.
Their swords collided.
The first strike split the ground.
The second sent a wave of red energy through the battlefield.
The third shattered the false king’s armor.
He did not bleed.
The Eighth Fragment repaired him instantly.
Ethan moved faster.
The black sword cut through his shoulder, then his chest, then his arm.
Each wound closed.
The false king countered with a red blade.
Ethan blocked it, but the impact threw him across the battlefield.
He landed in the mud.
The false king walked toward him.
"You are weaker than I remember."
"I am stronger than you remember."
"You abandoned the Crown."
"I changed it."
"You abandoned the throne."
"I never needed it."
"You abandoned the army."
"I refused to sacrifice them."
The false king’s red blade grew larger.
"You abandoned victory."
Ethan stood.
"No."
The false king attacked.
Ethan met the strike.
The two swords locked.
The false king leaned closer.
"You cannot win without becoming cruel."
Ethan looked into his own eyes.
"Cruelty is not strength."
"Then why did it work?"
"Because people allowed it to."
The false king pushed him backward.
"People always allow it."
"Not anymore."
Ethan released the Sword Fragment’s authority.
The black blade changed.
Instead of cutting the false king’s body, it cut the red lines connecting him to the battlefield.
One.
Two.
Three.
The soldiers around them fell out of synchronization.
The false king’s strength weakened.
His eyes widened.
"What are you doing?"
"Separating you from the war."
The red crown flared.
The threads reconnected.
The false king struck Ethan across the face.
Ethan fell to one knee.
"You cannot separate me from conflict."
"Not conflict."
Ethan wiped the blood from his mouth.
"From choice."
The Eighth Fragment was not drawing power from battle itself.
It was drawing power from people choosing to fight.
As long as the soldiers believed their actions belonged to them, the fragment could use them.
Ethan raised his voice.
"Everyone, listen!"
His voice carried across the battlefield.
The soldiers looked toward him.
The false king turned sharply.
"Silence him!"
The army hesitated.
Ethan continued:
"You are not fighting because you chose this war."
Red threads trembled.
"You are fighting because someone showed you an enemy and told you obedience was courage."
The false king raised his sword.
"Do not listen to him!"
Ethan looked at the soldiers.
"Ask yourselves why you are here."
The red light began to weaken.
"Ask yourselves who benefits from your anger."
A soldier lowered his weapon.
Then another.
The false king’s armor cracked.
The Eighth Fragment pulsed violently.
The false king shouted:
"He is trying to deceive you!"
Ethan pointed toward him.
"Then look at him."
The soldiers looked.
The false king wore a crown of bone.
He stood on a throne surrounded by dead banners.
Behind him, Marianne remained frozen.
"He claims to fight for the world," Ethan said, "but he enslaved the people standing beside him."
The red threads began breaking.
The soldiers remembered themselves.
Their fear.
Their families.
Their reasons for joining the army.
The Eighth Fragment could not feed on conflict once the conflict was understood.
The false king screamed.
"You are weak!"
The last red thread broke.
The army fell silent.
The false king staggered.
The crown above his head cracked.
Ethan moved.
He crossed the distance between them and placed the black sword against the crown.
The false king grabbed his wrist.
"You will regret destroying me."
"I am not destroying you."
"You have said that before."
"I am accepting you."
Ethan used the Seventh Fragment.
His identity recognized the false king as part of him.
The Eighth Fragment resisted.
The red crown tried to tear itself away.
Ethan pulled it closer.
"You are my anger."
The false king struggled.
"You are my fear."
The crown cracked further.
"You are my desire to control everything."
The false king’s face twisted.
"You cannot live without me!"
Ethan looked at him.
"I can live with you."
The red crown shattered.
The false king’s body dissolved into streams of crimson light.
The energy entered Ethan’s chest.
The Eighth Fragment became quiet.
The battlefield remained silent.
The soldiers looked at Ethan.
He had defeated the false king without killing him.
But the fragment had not disappeared.
It now rested inside Ethan.
Ethan stumbled.
Elena’s voice came from behind him.
"Ethan!"
He turned.
She had reached Marianne.
The black ice around the older woman was gone.
But Elena’s sword was broken, and blood covered her shoulder.
Marianne stood behind her, breathing heavily.
The red symbol on her chest had disappeared.
Ethan walked toward them.
"Is she alive?"
Marianne opened her eyes.
"Unfortunately."
Elena helped her stand.
Ethan looked at the old woman.
"You served Veyron."
"I served my family."
"You allowed him to control generations."
"I believed obedience would protect them."
"You were wrong."
"Yes."
The answer surprised him.
Marianne looked toward Elena.
"I was wrong."
Elena’s expression softened, but she did not forgive her.
"Then help us fix it."
Marianne nodded.
The red sky began to clear.
The Eighth Fragment’s influence had weakened, but the battlefield remained full of soldiers and weapons.
Professor Voss arrived with Noah and Adrian.
Noah looked at Ethan.
"Did you win?"
"Maybe."
"That is not a satisfying answer."
The ground beneath them suddenly cracked.
A red symbol appeared in the center of the battlefield.
The Eighth Fragment had been absorbed, but its awakening had triggered something beneath the earth.
A massive structure rose from the ground.
An ancient gate.
Its surface was covered in eight symbols.
Seven were glowing.
The eighth was dark.
Ethan studied it.
"The Eighth Fragment was not the final one."
Veyron approached.
His expression was grim.
"Of course not."
"Why?"
"Because the fragments were never numbered by power."
"What does the Eighth represent?"
Veyron looked at the soldiers.
"Conflict."
"And the Ninth?"
Veyron stared at the dark symbol on the gate.
"Consequence."
The gate opened.
Beyond it was a vast underground chamber.
At the center stood a throne made from bones.
Behind it floated a dark crystal filled with red and black light.
A figure stood before the crystal.
He wore a white mask.
His body was covered in scars.
Ethan felt a presence he recognized.
Not the Observer.
Not Veyron.
The First Sovereign.
The figure turned toward them.
"Eight fragments have awakened."
His voice echoed across the battlefield.
"Only one remains."
Ethan raised his sword.
The masked figure continued:
"The Ninth Fragment is not hidden."
The crystal behind him opened.
"It has been waiting inside the person who started the war."
Ethan looked at Veyron.
Veyron’s face became empty.
The masked figure lifted one hand.
A black symbol appeared over Veyron’s heart.
Veyron fell to his knees.
The figure spoke:
"The Ninth Fragment belongs to Veyron."
The battlefield erupted in darkness.
And Veyron’s eyes turned completely black.
