The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 31: The World Chooses
Every Mana Core in the world awakened at the same time.
In the kingdoms of the east, young apprentices collapsed as their cores began to burn.
In the northern mountains, magical beasts opened their eyes beneath centuries of ice.
Across the seas, ancient temples filled with violet light.
And in every academy, fortress, and royal palace, the same voice echoed through the souls of those connected to mana.
**The vessel has chosen a name.**
**Now the world will choose its side.**
The message lasted only a few seconds.
Then it vanished.
But the damage had already been done.
The magical networks connecting the continent began to collapse.
The City of Ash trembled beneath Ethan Vale’s feet.
The black tower remained standing, but cracks spread across its walls. The candles inside the tower burned with different colors now—violet, silver, white, and gold.
Each color represented one of the awakened fragments.
Noah Blake looked toward the sky.
"So the world is choosing sides?"
"Yes," Ethan said.
"How?"
"By force."
"That sounds unfair."
"The world has never been fair."
Professor Aurelia Voss approached Ethan.
"What did the voice mean by vessel?"
Ethan looked at the black tower.
"The world’s Mana Cores are connected to the First Door."
Voss’s expression tightened.
"You said every Mana Core contains a trace of the First Sovereign."
"Yes."
"Then the Observer can use every mage as a potential vessel."
"Not immediately."
"How long?"
Ethan closed his eyes.
The Knowledge Fragment showed him the magical structure of the world.
Mana flowed through rivers beneath the earth.
It gathered in ley lines.
It entered living creatures.
Every Mana Core connected to the same source.
The First Door.
"The connection is incomplete," Ethan said. "The Observer cannot control everyone yet."
"Yet?"
"The world is becoming more connected."
Voss looked toward the glowing tower.
"The magical networks."
"The academies. Communication crystals. Royal barriers. All of them use the same mana circulation."
Noah’s expression became pale.
"So the more magic people use, the stronger the connection becomes."
"Yes."
"Then stop using magic."
Voss looked at him.
"Do you want the kingdoms to stop defending themselves?"
"I want them to stop giving the golden eye a path into their heads."
Ethan looked toward the ruined city.
"Too late."
A deep sound rolled across the horizon.
The first of the kingdom beacons had fallen.
Far to the east, a column of black smoke rose into the sky.
Then another appeared in the south.
Then three more.
The major magical cities were losing their barriers.
Noah counted them.
"That is not good."
"No."
"Can anything be good?"
"Occasionally."
Veyron stood near the broken mirror.
His face was calmer now, but his body remained damaged. The shared seal had stripped away most of the power he had accumulated over the centuries.
He looked toward the distant beacons.
"The Observer has begun the alignment."
Ethan turned toward him.
"What alignment?"
"The world’s Mana Cores are being connected into one network."
"And when the network is complete?"
"The First Door will no longer need a physical opening."
Ethan understood.
The Observer would not enter through the sky.
It would enter through every person capable of using magic.
A world-sized vessel.
Ethan looked at the fragments within his soul.
The Crown.
The Witness.
Knowledge.
The Sword.
The White Flame.
The Sixth Prison.
The Identity.
Seven powers.
Seven functions.
Seven locations.
The First Door had seven locks.
The original seal had never been one lock.
It had been a system.
The fragments were not merely tools.
They were pieces of a global barrier.
If the Observer connected the world, the barrier would invert.
Instead of keeping the Door closed, it would become the Door.
Ethan looked at Seraphina’s distant tower.
She had known.
She had always known.
The question was how much.
"Why did Seraphina send me to the City of Ash?" Elena asked.
Ethan glanced at her.
"To recover the Identity Fragment."
"Why?"
"Because without it, the Observer could rewrite who I was."
"And now?"
"Now it cannot copy me completely."
Elena touched the silver scar over her heart.
"But it can still use the world."
"Yes."
"Then what is our next move?"
Ethan looked toward the black road leading out of the city.
"We find the remaining fragments."
Veyron shook his head.
"Too slow."
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
"Explain."
"The fragments are not waiting anymore."
Veyron pointed toward the horizon.
"The Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth have awakened. The Seventh is inside you. The remaining fragments are reacting to the alignment."
A distant explosion shook the city.
The black tower’s candles flickered.
One of the flames turned deep crimson.
A symbol appeared above the city.
A broken crown covered in blood.
"The Eighth Fragment," Veyron said.
Ethan studied the symbol.
"Where?"
Veyron looked toward the east.
"The Royal Warfront."
Noah stared at him.
"That sounds like a place we should avoid."
"It is where the largest armies on the continent are gathering," Veyron replied.
"Then it is definitely a place we should avoid."
Veyron continued:
"The Eighth Fragment is connected to conflict. Every battle strengthens it. Every death gives it more authority."
Ethan’s expression became grim.
"How long until it awakens?"
"Already awakened."
The crimson symbol pulsed.
At the same moment, a new voice entered the minds of every person in the city.
**The battlefield awaits its king.**
The words were followed by images.
An enormous plain.
Thousands of soldiers.
Black banners.
Red skies.
At the center of the battlefield stood a figure wearing a crown made of bone.
It held a weapon covered in blood.
The image disappeared.
Noah stared at Ethan.
"I assume we are going there."
"Yes."
"Of course we are."
Professor Voss looked toward the city gates.
"The airship cannot fly through the dead zone."
"We will use the old road."
"It may take weeks."
"Then we move quickly."
Elena turned toward the city.
"Before we leave, we need to warn the people."
Ethan looked at her.
"Warn them about what?"
"The Mana Core alignment."
"They will not understand."
"Then explain it."
"Panic will spread."
"People deserve to know."
Ethan remained silent.
In his first life, he had hidden information from the public.
He had believed ordinary people could not understand the threats he faced.
That belief had made him powerful.
It had also made him alone.
Elena stepped closer.
"You cannot decide everything for everyone."
Ethan looked at the city.
The people of the Ashen Capital had already begun gathering in the streets. They were confused, frightened, and looking toward the black tower.
The city was built on his history.
They had not chosen him.
They had inherited the consequences of his choices.
Ethan climbed the remaining steps of the tower entrance.
His voice carried through the city without magic.
"The world is entering a crisis."
People turned toward him.
Soldiers raised their weapons.
Civilians gathered near the broken streets.
Ethan continued:
"Every person capable of using magic is connected to the First Door. Something outside the world is attempting to use that connection."
A murmur spread through the crowd.
"Your Mana Cores may become targets."
Some people began to panic.
Others shouted questions.
"Who are you?"
"What is the First Door?"
"Are we going to die?"
Ethan looked across the city.
"I do not know."
The crowd became silent.
Noah looked at him in surprise.
Ethan continued:
"I do not know how long we have. I do not know how many fragments remain. I do not know whether the kingdoms will unite or destroy one another."
He looked toward the black banners above the ruined capital.
"But I know that hiding the truth will not save you."
The people listened.
"I was once responsible for a war that killed millions. I believed control was the only way to protect the world."
Ethan’s voice remained steady.
"I was wrong."
The city became completely silent.
"I will not command you. I will not promise that everyone will survive. But I will fight to prevent the Observer from turning the world into a vessel."
A soldier near the front raised his weapon.
"You are Azeroth Veyr!"
Ethan looked at him.
"Yes."
Fear moved through the crowd.
He did not deny it.
"I was the greatest villain in history."
The words echoed across the ruins.
"But I am not asking you to trust the man I was."
Ethan placed one hand over his heart.
"I am asking you to judge the choices I make now."
The crowd remained silent.
Then a small child stepped from between two adults.
She looked toward Ethan.
"Are you going to save us?"
Ethan looked at her.
He remembered another child.
A village.
A fire.
A choice he had failed to make.
"I will try."
The child nodded.
That answer seemed enough for her.
A soldier lowered his weapon.
Then another.
Not everyone accepted him.
Many people still looked afraid.
But fear was different from obedience.
Ethan turned away from the crowd.
Noah approached him.
"That was almost inspiring."
"It was not intended to be."
"It was."
"I spoke the truth."
"That is why."
Professor Voss walked toward them.
"The city’s communication network is beginning to recover."
A crystal floated beside her.
It displayed images from across the continent.
The eastern kingdoms were mobilizing.
The northern provinces were under attack by magical beasts.
The royal armies were moving toward the warfront.
And beneath every image, the same red symbol appeared.
The Eighth Fragment.
The battlefield.
Elena looked at the crystal.
"If the fragment grows stronger through conflict, the warfront will become its source."
"Yes," Ethan said.
"Then we need to stop the armies from fighting."
"That will be difficult."
"Why?"
"Because the armies do not know they are fighting for the fragment."
Veyron approached.
"They do not need to know."
Ethan looked at him.
"Explain."
"The Eighth Fragment influences conflict indirectly. It feeds on fear, anger, and pride. The armies believe they are defending their kingdoms."
"Who started the war?"
Veyron’s eyes moved toward the crimson symbol.
"Someone wearing your face."
The crystal image changed.
A figure stood before the armies of the Royal Warfront.
Black hair.
Violet eyes.
A dark crown.
The figure spoke to thousands of soldiers.
"Ethan Vale has returned."
The soldiers raised their weapons.
"He seeks to reclaim the fragments and destroy the kingdoms."
The image showed the figure turning toward the battlefield.
"We must kill him before he becomes the next Calamity."
Noah stared.
"That is you."
"It is not."
"It looks exactly like you."
"The Identity Fragment can be copied."
Ethan studied the image.
The copy of himself was not perfect.
The posture was wrong.
The expression was too confident.
The voice carried no hesitation.
It was an imitation of Azeroth.
A false king.
The Eighth Fragment had created an enemy for the armies to unite against.
Him.
The battlefield voice echoed through the crystal:
"March to the Royal Warfront."
"Kill the false king."
"Save the world."
The transmission ended.
Elena turned toward Ethan.
"They are going to hunt you."
"Yes."
"You cannot reach the battlefield with a large group."
"Then we go quietly."
Noah looked at him.
"You mean secretly?"
"Yes."
"You are terrible at secrecy."
"I have improved."
"You announced your entire identity to a city."
"That was honesty."
"That was the opposite of secrecy."
Ethan looked toward the road leading east.
The city was beginning to fade at its edges.
The Observer was still trying to erase the old capital.
They had limited time.
Ethan turned toward Veyron.
"You are coming."
Veyron looked surprised.
"You trust me?"
"No."
"Then why bring me?"
"You know the Eighth Fragment."
"I know where it is."
"You also know the false king."
Veyron’s expression became dark.
"He is not a copy."
"What is he?"
Veyron looked at the crimson symbol.
"The part of you that refused to change."
Ethan understood.
The Eighth Fragment had not created a random imitation.
It had separated the old Azeroth from the Identity Fragment.
The ruthless king.
The conqueror.
The man who believed sacrifice was inevitable.
That version of him now stood before the world.
Leading armies.
Building a war.
Trying to reclaim the fragments.
Ethan’s shadow moved.
For one moment, it formed a crown.
Then it disappeared.
The Crimson Fragment had chosen its host.
It was not inside a human.
It was inside his past.
Ethan turned toward the eastern road.
"We leave now."
Noah adjusted his bag.
"You know, most people would rest after saving reality."
"I am not most people."
"That is not always a good thing."
Ethan began walking.
Behind him, the City of Ash continued to disappear.
Ahead, the Royal Warfront waited.
The armies of the continent were gathering.
The Eighth Fragment was growing stronger.
And at the center of the battlefield, a false version of Ethan Vale raised a black crown and declared war on the world.
