The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 30: The Beginning of the Real War

The sky above the City of Ash turned white.

Not bright.

Not peaceful.

White in the way a blank page was white before something terrible was written upon it.

The golden eyes of the Observer disappeared one by one.

Then the sky itself began to descend.

A wave of pale light moved downward from the clouds, swallowing the ruins, the towers, and the broken statues of Azeroth.

The ground trembled.

The black tower cracked from its highest balcony to its buried foundations.

Seraphina Crow stood above them, her golden eyes fixed on the approaching light.

"The Observer is no longer using a vessel," she said.

Ethan Vale looked up.

"Then what is it using?"

"The world."

The white light touched the outer walls of the city.

Everywhere it passed, the ruins became smooth and featureless. The ancient stones lost their cracks. The statues lost their faces. The ash covering the streets vanished.

It was not destroying the city.

It was removing its history.

Noah Blake stared at the blank wall beside him.

"That is worse than fire."

"Yes," Ethan said.

"Why?"

"Fire leaves evidence."

A wave of white light moved toward them.

Ethan raised his hand.

The Crown Fragment answered.

Violet light formed around his companions.

The white wave struck the barrier.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the barrier began to disappear.

Not break.

Disappear.

The Observer was removing the idea that the barrier existed.

Ethan drew the black sword.

The Fourth Fragment had changed after the shared lock was created. The blade was thinner now, almost transparent, and a silver line ran through its center.

Ethan struck the white wave.

The sword cut a narrow path through the light.

"Move!" he shouted.

Everyone ran toward the black tower.

The city collapsed behind them.

Noah sprinted beside Ethan, clutching his knife.

"I thought we were supposed to learn the truth first!"

"We did."

"I preferred it when we did not know the truth!"

"You were happier when you were ignorant."

"I was also alive!"

Elena Frost ran on Ethan’s other side.

Her sword was covered in frost, and the mark on her chest had transformed into a silver circle.

"The Seventh Fragment has changed the city," she said.

"It has changed the boundary."

"What does that mean?"

"The City of Ash was built on a memory."

Ethan looked at the buildings disappearing behind them.

"The Observer is erasing the memory that protects it."

Professor Aurelia Voss and Adrian Cross followed behind them, while Veyron remained near the back of the group.

The former heir moved with difficulty, his body still damaged from the ritual.

Marianne Frost had stayed behind in the north.

Princess Lyra was with her, maintaining the White Flame and the shared lock.

The group had entered the city without her because the Identity Fragment would not allow the Fifth Fragment inside.

Now Ethan understood why.

The White Flame revealed.

The Identity Fragment concealed.

If Lyra entered the City of Ash, the city’s hidden history would become visible to everything watching from beyond the world.

The black tower shook again.

A huge piece of stone fell from the upper levels.

Seraphina raised both hands.

Golden chains shot from the tower and held the falling stone in place.

"Inside!" she shouted.

Ethan reached the tower entrance.

The doors were gone.

Beyond them was a long black corridor filled with candles.

The flames were dying one by one.

Every candle represented a memory.

Every memory the Observer erased weakened the city.

Ethan stepped into the tower.

The white light stopped at the entrance.

It did not enter.

Noah looked back.

The light had swallowed the entire street, but it could not cross the threshold.

"Why is it not following us?"

"Because this tower is built from my identity."

"So it cannot erase it?"

"It is trying."

The candles began going out faster.

Ethan walked through the corridor.

Memories disappeared around him.

The first flame showed the old academy.

It turned white and vanished.

The second showed Veyron kneeling before Azeroth.

It disappeared.

The third showed Evelyn standing beside a black crystal.

It vanished before Ethan could see her face.

Ethan stopped.

The Seventh Fragment inside his soul pulsed.

A silver line appeared along the wall.

A hidden door.

He placed his hand against it.

The door opened.

Behind it was a circular chamber.

At the center stood a black throne.

It was empty.

Behind the throne was a massive mirror made of dark glass.

The mirror did not reflect Ethan.

It reflected the City of Ash as it had been a thousand years ago.

The streets were full.

The academy towers were whole.

The black banners of the Ashen Empire moved above the buildings.

And at the center of the city stood Azeroth Veyr.

He was not alone.

Six people stood around him.

Evelyn.

Veyron.

Seraphina.

Darius.

A woman with golden eyes.

And a child.

The child looked exactly like Ethan.

Noah stared at the mirror.

"Who are they?"

Ethan focused on the woman with golden eyes.

He had never seen her before.

But something inside him recognized her.

The Seventh Fragment opened a memory.

The woman was standing before the First Door.

She held a small golden flame between her palms.

Darius stood beside her.

Azeroth was kneeling.

The child stood behind them.

The woman spoke.

"The vessel is ready."

Darius nodded.

"The boy will carry the First Sovereign’s remains."

Evelyn looked horrified.

"He is not a vessel."

The golden-eyed woman smiled.

"He is an inheritance."

The memory changed.

The woman placed the golden flame against the child’s chest.

The child screamed.

Azeroth rose and attacked her.

The room exploded with black and gold light.

The memory shattered.

Ethan opened his eyes.

The mirror remained unchanged.

The woman with golden eyes was looking directly at him.

She could see him through the memory.

"You remember me," she said.

Ethan stepped closer.

"Who are you?"

The woman smiled.

"I am the one who created your first soul."

The chamber went silent.

Noah turned toward Ethan.

"Your soul was created?"

Ethan did not answer.

The woman continued:

"You were not born, Ethan Vale. You were assembled."

The words struck him.

His memories of childhood.

The laboratory.

Evelyn.

Darius.

The black heart inside the crystal.

All of them were connected.

The First Sovereign’s remains had been used to create a vessel.

But who had created the vessel?

Not Darius.

Not Evelyn.

The woman.

The woman with golden eyes.

The first servant of the Observer.

The original architect of the First Door.

Ethan raised the black sword.

The mirror rippled.

"You are the Observer."

"No."

"Then what are you?"

"A witness."

The name echoed inside Ethan’s mind.

The Observer watched from beyond the Door.

But this woman had been inside the world.

She had built the first prison.

Created the first vessel.

And shaped Ethan’s soul.

"Why did you create me?" Ethan asked.

"Because the world needed a lock."

"I was a child."

"You were a possibility."

"What happened to the First Sovereign?"

"He died."

"Then why use his remains?"

"Because his soul had reached the edge of the world."

The woman’s smile faded.

"Only his essence could hold the Door closed."

"You used me."

"Yes."

"For what?"

"To create a living lock."

Ethan looked at the child inside the mirror.

The boy was crying.

Evelyn was trying to reach him.

Darius was holding her back.

Azeroth stood between them and the golden-eyed woman.

He was younger.

Angrier.

But not yet a tyrant.

"You wanted me to become the lock," Ethan said.

"We all did."

"Why did Azeroth resist?"

The woman looked toward the reflection of his former self.

"Because he believed the world deserved a choice."

The answer confused Ethan.

She continued:

"He believed a lock without consent was another form of imprisonment."

"So he divided his soul."

"Yes."

"He created the fragments."

"Yes."

"He planned to return."

"Yes."

"And then?"

The golden-eyed woman looked directly at Ethan.

"Then he became afraid."

The mirror changed.

Azeroth stood alone in the black chamber.

The First Door was behind him.

Evelyn was at his side.

Seraphina stood in front of him.

Veyron watched from the shadows.

Azeroth held the nine fragments.

"I cannot become the lock," he said.

Evelyn looked at him.

"You promised."

"I promised to protect the world."

"By refusing?"

"By finding another way."

Seraphina stepped forward.

"There is no other way."

Azeroth’s face became cold.

"Then I will create one."

He turned toward the fragments.

Ethan understood.

The final memory had been divided.

The truth Seraphina hid was not that she had betrayed him.

It was that Azeroth had rejected the sacrifice.

He had chosen to search for a different solution.

The Final War had begun because he had refused to become the lock.

Veyron had betrayed him because he believed hesitation would destroy the world.

The heroes had attacked because Seraphina had allowed them to.

Everyone had believed they were saving reality.

Everyone had been wrong.

The mirror showed Azeroth placing his hand on the First Door.

The woman with golden eyes appeared behind him.

"You cannot run from what you are."

Azeroth turned.

"I can become something else."

The woman raised one hand.

The First Door opened.

The Observer looked through.

Azeroth’s soul split.

The nine fragments flew across the world.

His body remained before the Door.

The woman reached for him.

Evelyn attacked.

Seraphina raised the silver blade.

Veyron picked up the Ninth Fragment.

The memory ended.

Ethan stared at the mirror.

"He did not plan to become the lock."

"No," the woman said.

"He planned to destroy the Door."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because he believed the world could survive without magic."

Professor Voss stepped closer.

"That would destroy every Mana Core."

"Yes."

"Every spell."

"Yes."

"Every magical creature."

"Yes."

The woman looked at her.

"The world would become ordinary."

Ethan understood.

Azeroth had not wanted to rule the magical world forever.

He had wanted to end magic itself.

He had believed magic was the wound.

The First Door had allowed power to enter the world.

If the Door were destroyed, magic would disappear.

The kingdoms would fall.

The magical bloodlines would end.

The fragments would lose their purpose.

The Observer would be trapped outside.

But millions of people would die.

Azeroth had been willing to accept that price.

Ethan stepped away from the mirror.

"What happened to the plan?"

"Veyron stopped it."

"And Seraphina?"

"She helped."

"Evelyn?"

"She tried to save you."

"Darius?"

"He wanted to control you."

"And the child?"

The golden-eyed woman looked toward the reflection of the boy.

"The child was the beginning."

Ethan’s body became cold.

"The child was me."

"Yes."

"Then who is Ethan Vale?"

The woman smiled.

"The name you gave yourself."

The white light outside the tower grew brighter.

The City of Ash began to disappear.

The mirror cracked.

The woman stepped closer from inside the reflection.

"The Observer is descending because the Door has been damaged."

"It cannot enter."

"It does not need to."

The mirror broke.

A golden eye appeared in the chamber.

"The world is already becoming a vessel."

The eye looked toward Ethan.

"Every Mana Core is a fragment of the First Sovereign’s essence."

Ethan froze.

The truth moved through him.

The magic in the world was not natural.

Every mage carried a trace of the First Sovereign.

Every Mana Core connected the world to the Door.

The Observer did not need one vessel.

The entire world was the vessel.

The woman’s voice echoed:

"Your war was never about opening the Door."

The golden eye widened.

"It was about deciding who would control what came through."

The white light broke through the tower wall.

Ethan raised the black sword.

The Seventh Fragment responded.

The Identity Fragment did not give him more power.

It gave him a name.

A name was a law.

The Observer could not erase what he recognized as himself.

Ethan stood before the golden eye.

"I know who I am."

The eye pressed against the chamber.

The walls began to disappear.

"I am not the First Sovereign’s vessel."

The sword brightened.

"I am not Veyron’s king."

The Seventh Fragment formed a silver circle around him.

"I am not the Observer’s door."

The golden eye cracked.

Ethan raised the blade.

"I am Ethan Vale."

The black sword cut through the eye.

The chamber exploded with light.

The Observer recoiled from the city.

The white wave stopped.

The candles reignited.

Every erased memory returned.

The City of Ash reappeared beneath the tower.

The black tower stopped collapsing.

Outside, the golden sky shattered into pieces.

The Observer had not been defeated.

But it had been pushed back.

The woman with golden eyes vanished from the mirror.

Before disappearing, she whispered:

"Then prove it."

The chamber fell silent.

Ethan lowered the sword.

Veyron stepped forward.

His expression was unreadable.

"You remembered."

"Yes."

"You know what you were created to do."

"Yes."

"You know what Azeroth intended."

"Yes."

"What will you do now?"

Ethan looked through the broken wall at the City of Ash.

The old capital.

The old throne.

The old empire.

All of it had been built on a lie.

He turned toward his companions.

Noah looked frightened but stayed beside him.

Elena watched him carefully.

Adrian looked at the ancient banners.

Professor Voss held her broken staff.

Ethan looked at the black tower.

"I will end the war."

Veyron laughed softly.

"The war has not even begun."

Ethan looked toward the sky.

The golden eyes had disappeared.

But the world’s Mana Cores had begun to glow.

Every mage across the continent felt the change.

Every magical beast lifted its head.

Every fragment awakened.

And far beyond the First Door, something began to speak through every Mana Core in existence.

**The vessel has chosen a name.**

Ethan’s eyes turned violet.

**Now the world will choose its side.**
