The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 29: The First Promise
The black tower doors closed.
Seraphina Crow disappeared behind them.
The golden door on the highest balcony vanished with her, leaving only darkness where the figure had stood.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The City of Ash remained silent around them.
Then Noah Blake spoke.
"What exactly was that?"
Ethan Vale stared at the tower.
"A memory."
"No, I mean the part where she said you promised not to become your father."
Ethan said nothing.
Noah stepped closer.
"You have a father?"
"Apparently."
"You never mentioned him."
"I did not remember him."
"That seems like important information."
Ethan looked at the black crystal in his hand.
The Identity Fragment had merged with his soul, but the final memory remained sealed inside the tower.
A memory of his childhood.
A promise he had made before becoming Azeroth Veyr.
A promise connected to his father.
The Crown Fragment was silent.
The Witness showed him fragments of the old capital.
The Knowledge Fragment translated the symbols on the tower.
The Sword pulsed faintly.
The Fifth and Sixth Fragments remained connected through the shared seal.
The Seventh Fragment was awake.
But the final memory was still beyond his reach.
Veyron stood several steps away.
His face was pale.
"What do you remember?" Ethan asked.
Veyron looked toward the tower.
"Not enough."
"That is not an answer."
"I knew you before you became Azeroth."
"You knew me as a child?"
"No."
"Then who was my father?"
Veyron remained silent.
Ethan walked toward him.
"Answer me."
Veyron looked at him.
"Your father was not a king."
"That is not what I asked."
"He was the reason you hated rulers."
Ethan’s expression hardened.
The words triggered something.
A dark room.
A wooden table.
A child hiding beneath it.
A man shouting.
A woman crying.
Then the memory vanished.
Ethan pressed his fingers against his temple.
Noah noticed.
"You remembered something."
"A room."
"What kind of room?"
"One with a table."
Noah waited.
Ethan opened his eyes.
"That is all."
Noah sighed.
"I am beginning to understand why your memories are so difficult."
Ethan turned toward the tower.
The black doors remained closed.
At their center, a line of silver text appeared.
**ENTER ALONE.**
Elena Frost immediately stepped forward.
"No."
The words had appeared for Ethan, but she had read them too.
Ethan looked at her.
"The tower wants me alone."
"Then you should not go alone."
"It may not allow you to enter."
"Then we will find another entrance."
Adrian Cross moved beside her.
"She is right."
Ethan looked at the others.
Professor Aurelia Voss was studying the tower’s foundation.
Noah was holding his knife.
Veyron looked as if he wanted to leave but knew there was nowhere to go.
Ethan understood what the Seventh Fragment was doing.
The Identity Fragment had accepted him because he had chosen his present life over his former throne.
The final memory required something else.
It required him to confront the source of the person he had become.
His father.
His childhood.
The promise.
The tower was not trying to separate him from his companions.
It was trying to make him face the memory without using them as shields.
Ethan placed one hand on the tower door.
"Wait here."
Noah frowned.
"That sounds like a terrible idea."
"It is necessary."
"Those two words are often used by people about to make terrible decisions."
Ethan looked at him.
"If I do not return—"
"No."
Ethan paused.
Noah’s expression had become serious.
"Do not say that."
"I have not finished."
"I do not care."
Ethan studied him.
Noah continued:
"You are not allowed to enter a strange tower, discover your tragic childhood, and disappear into a memory. If you are going to make a terrible decision, at least come back so we can complain about it."
Ethan almost smiled.
"I will try."
"That is not enough."
"It is what I can promise."
Noah looked away.
"Then keep it."
Ethan turned toward the tower.
The silver text disappeared.
The black doors opened.
Inside was darkness.
Ethan stepped through.
The doors closed behind him.
He found himself standing in a small room.
The walls were made of dark wood.
A single candle burned on a table.
The room was ordinary.
That was what made it disturbing.
There were no magical symbols.
No ancient weapons.
No thrones.
No dead soldiers.
Only a table, two chairs, a window, and a door.
Ethan heard voices from beyond the door.
A man shouting.
A woman crying.
A child breathing quietly beneath the table.
Ethan looked down.
He was the child.
Small.
Thin.
His hair was black, but his eyes were violet.
His hands were covered in bruises.
The room shook as something struck the wall outside.
The boy pressed himself farther beneath the table.
A man entered.
He was tall, with dark hair and a face that seemed permanently carved from anger.
His name appeared in the memory.
**Darius Veyr.**
Ethan’s father.
Darius carried a broken sword.
Blood covered one side of his face.
Behind him stood a woman with silver hair.
Ethan recognized her.
Evelyn.
But she was younger than he had ever seen her.
Darius grabbed her arm.
"You lied to me."
"I did not."
"You said the boy was ordinary."
"He is."
Darius looked beneath the table.
The child froze.
"You call that ordinary?"
Evelyn’s expression became tense.
"He has not awakened."
"He has not awakened because you sealed him."
The child looked at Evelyn.
She avoided his eyes.
Darius stepped toward the table.
"The blood of the First Sovereign is inside him."
Ethan did not understand the words.
The memory continued.
Evelyn moved between Darius and the table.
"You promised you would not hurt him."
"I promised nothing."
"He is your son."
"He is a weapon."
The child began to cry silently.
Darius raised the broken sword.
Evelyn’s hand flashed with silver light.
The sword flew from his grip.
Darius slammed into the wall.
A powerful magic filled the room.
The child beneath the table watched Evelyn.
She knelt in front of him.
"Do not be afraid."
The child whispered:
"Is he my father?"
Evelyn looked toward Darius.
"No."
Darius laughed from the floor.
"Tell him the truth."
Evelyn’s face became pale.
Darius stood slowly.
"The boy was created from the remains of the First Sovereign."
Ethan froze.
The room around him seemed to disappear.
The child was not born normally.
He had been created.
Not by Darius.
Not by Evelyn.
By the remnants of an ancient being known as the First Sovereign.
Darius had taken the child in.
Raised him.
Used him.
The memory changed.
The boy was older now.
Six years old.
He stood in a training room holding a wooden sword.
Darius stood before him.
"Again."
The boy attacked.
Darius knocked him to the floor.
"Again."
The boy stood.
His body was bruised.
"Again."
He attacked.
Darius defeated him.
Again.
Again.
Again.
The boy’s hands began to bleed.
Evelyn watched from the side.
"Enough."
Darius turned toward her.
"He must learn."
"He is a child."
"He is a vessel."
The boy looked at Evelyn.
"Am I a vessel?"
Evelyn hesitated.
Darius smiled.
"Yes."
The boy lowered the wooden sword.
"What am I supposed to carry?"
"The power of your father."
"Who is my father?"
Darius answered.
"The First Sovereign."
The memory shifted.
The boy was nine.
He stood in a ruined village.
Darius had brought him there to train.
Bodies covered the ground.
A group of survivors knelt in the mud.
Darius pointed toward them.
"Choose one."
The boy looked at him.
"Choose what?"
"One person to save."
"And the others?"
"Die."
The boy stared at the survivors.
A woman.
An old man.
Two children.
A wounded soldier.
He could save only one.
Darius waited.
The boy walked toward the wounded soldier.
The soldier had a sword.
He was the strongest.
Darius nodded.
"Good choice."
The boy stopped.
Then he turned toward one of the children.
A girl who was holding her brother.
"I choose her."
Darius’s expression hardened.
"She is useless."
"She is scared."
"That is not a reason."
"It is mine."
The boy reached for the girl.
Darius raised his hand.
The villagers screamed.
The memory shattered.
Ethan stood alone in the room.
The candle flame was almost gone.
He understood now.
Darius had tried to turn him into a weapon.
He had taught him that power was the only protection.
That weakness deserved punishment.
That every choice required sacrificing someone.
The boy had learned.
Then he had promised himself he would never become like Darius.
The memory changed again.
Ethan was twelve.
Darius stood before him in a black chamber.
The First Sovereign’s remains floated inside a crystal behind them.
A massive black heart.
Evelyn stood beside the crystal.
"The vessel is ready," Darius said.
Evelyn shook her head.
"He is not ready."
"He has survived the trials."
"He has not accepted the power."
"He will."
Darius turned toward the boy.
"You will inherit the Sovereign’s Authority."
The boy looked at the black heart.
"What will happen to me?"
"You will become a king."
"I do not want to be a king."
Darius slapped him.
The boy fell to the floor.
"You do not choose what you want."
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Darius, stop."
Darius ignored her.
"A ruler does not ask permission. A ruler takes."
The boy looked up at him.
Something changed in his eyes.
It was not power.
It was understanding.
He finally realized that Darius did not want a son.
He wanted a successor.
A vessel.
A weapon.
Someone who would become exactly what he hated.
The boy rose.
He was bleeding from the mouth.
"I will never become you."
Darius laughed.
"You already are."
The boy looked toward Evelyn.
She was crying silently.
Then he looked at the black heart.
"I will never rule through fear."
Darius lifted his hand.
The room began to shake.
"You will rule."
"I will never force people to obey me."
"You will rule."
"I will never sacrifice innocent people for power."
The black heart began to glow.
The boy’s eyes became violet.
"I will never become my father."
The memory shattered.
Ethan returned to the dark room.
The candle went out.
The tower became silent.
A voice spoke behind him.
"Now you remember."
Ethan turned.
The Identity Fragment stood near the door.
It still wore his face, but it no longer looked like a reflection.
It looked like a child.
His child self.
"What happened to Darius?" Ethan asked.
"He died."
"Who killed him?"
"You did."
Ethan closed his eyes.
A final memory appeared.
He was seventeen.
Darius was standing in a burning chamber.
The boy had already awakened the Sovereign’s Authority.
Darius attacked him.
Ethan defended himself.
The battle lasted less than a minute.
Darius fell.
Ethan stood over him.
Darius laughed through the blood.
"You became me."
Ethan looked down at him.
"No."
He raised his hand.
"I became what you were afraid I would become."
The memory faded.
The Identity Fragment stepped closer.
"You kept your promise for a while."
"For a while?"
"You became a ruler."
"I became a protector."
"You conquered kingdoms."
"To unite them against the First Door."
"You destroyed cities."
"To stop rebellions."
"You sacrificed armies."
"To strengthen the seal."
The Identity Fragment stared at him.
"You did not become Darius completely."
Ethan looked toward the empty candle.
"But you became close enough."
The child version of him reached into his chest.
A small golden flame appeared in his hand.
"This is why you created me."
"To protect my identity."
"To remind you of your first promise."
"What do you want from me?"
The child held out the flame.
"Choose again."
Ethan looked at it.
"If I take it, what happens?"
"You will remember the final truth."
"And if I refuse?"
"You will remain incomplete."
Ethan thought about Darius.
His father.
His creator.
The man who had tried to turn him into a weapon.
He had spent centuries trying to prove that he was different.
But the truth was simpler.
He had become powerful for the same reason Darius had wanted power.
Fear.
The fear of being weak.
The fear of being controlled.
The fear of losing people.
Ethan reached for the flame.
The moment his fingers touched it, the tower disappeared.
He stood before the First Door.
Azeroth knelt in front of it.
Seraphina held the silver blade.
Evelyn stood beside her.
Veyron was behind them.
Azeroth looked at Seraphina.
"If I forget, you must guide me."
Seraphina’s face was full of tears.
"I will."
"If I return as the same man, stop me."
"I will."
"If I try to open the Door, kill me."
"I will."
Azeroth looked toward Evelyn.
"And if I become a ruler again?"
Evelyn stepped closer.
"Then remember the promise."
Azeroth smiled faintly.
"I may not remember."
"That is why we will."
The memory ended.
Ethan stood in the black tower.
The Identity Fragment had dissolved.
All the memories returned.
Not just the truth about Seraphina.
The truth about himself.
He had asked them to erase his memories because he knew that power would corrupt him.
He had not been betrayed by Seraphina.
She had followed his final order.
The tower doors opened.
Ethan stepped outside.
His companions were waiting in the City of Ash.
Noah rushed toward him.
"What happened?"
Ethan looked at him.
"I remembered."
"Everything?"
"Enough."
Elena studied his face.
"Are you all right?"
Ethan looked toward the black tower.
Then at the statues.
Then at the people standing beside him.
"I am not the man I was."
Noah frowned.
"That was not what I asked."
Ethan looked at him.
"No."
Noah nodded.
"That is a better answer."
Seraphina appeared on the highest balcony.
Her golden eyes were tired.
Ethan looked up at her.
"You followed my order."
"Yes."
"You erased the memory."
"Yes."
"You knew I might hate you for it."
"Yes."
"Why did you not tell me when I returned?"
"Because you needed to choose who you would become before learning why."
Ethan understood.
He had wanted the truth immediately.
But if he had remembered everything in Greymoor, he might have returned to being Azeroth completely.
The second life had needed to exist before the first life could return.
Seraphina looked toward the sky.
The black tower began to shake.
"The Observer has seen the memory."
Ethan looked up.
Golden eyes opened above the City of Ash.
The First Door had not opened.
But something had found a new way to watch them.
Seraphina continued:
"Your identity is complete now."
Ethan felt the Seventh Fragment settle inside him.
A final symbol appeared over his heart.
A black circle divided by a silver line.
"What does that mean?" Elena asked.
Ethan looked at the symbol.
"It means I know who I am."
The golden eyes above the city widened.
A voice echoed through the ruins.
**Then choose a side.**
The City of Ash began to collapse.
The statues shattered.
The black tower cracked from top to bottom.
Far beneath the ruins, something awakened.
Seraphina raised her hand.
"The Seventh Fragment was never the end."
"Then what was it?"
She looked at Ethan.
"The beginning of the real war."
Beyond the city walls, the sky turned white.
The Observer had stopped watching.
It had begun to descend.
And this time, it was not coming through a vessel.
It was coming through the world itself.
