The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 22: The Heir of Ash and Light

  • Next Chapter

The palace walls disappeared.

The grand hall, the frozen king and queen, the white flames, and even the floor beneath Ethan Vale’s feet were swallowed by darkness.

For a moment, there was no longer an inside or an outside.

There was only a black sky filled with golden eyes.

Thousands of them stared from the emptiness beyond reality.

Noah Blake’s voice came from somewhere beside Ethan.

"I would like to formally complain about the palace."

Ethan looked around.

Noah was standing inside a golden circle of light, his knife raised in front of him. Elena Frost stood beside him with her sword drawn, while Adrian Cross had placed himself between them and Lord Cassian Valehart.

Professor Aurelia Voss was already casting a spell.

The red light around her staff fought against the darkness, but every symbol she created faded before becoming complete.

"This is not a real space," she said.

"No," Ethan replied. "It is a connection."

"To the First Door?"

"To something looking through it."

Cassian stood several steps away.

His white military uniform had changed. The silver threads running across it had turned black, and a dark symbol now covered his chest. It looked similar to the mark Veyron had carried, but it was more complicated.

Two circles overlapped around a vertical line.

One side was black.

The other was white.

Cassian smiled.

"You understand more quickly than your former self."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

"You knew him."

"I know everything that remains of him."

"Then tell me your relationship with Veyron."

Cassian spread his hands.

"That depends on which relationship you mean."

"I am not interested in riddles."

"That is unfortunate. Your entire history is built from them."

The white flame above Princess Lyra Aurelian flickered.

The princess remained suspended in the golden chains, her body surrounded by a pale aura. She was conscious, but unable to move.

Cassian glanced toward her.

"The Fifth Fragment is becoming unstable."

Ethan looked at the flame.

It had been white before.

Now black veins were spreading through it.

The fragment was being corrupted by the connection to the Observer.

Or perhaps Cassian was forcing it to change.

"Release her," Ethan said.

Cassian shook his head.

"I cannot."

"You are holding her captive."

"I am preserving the vessel."

"She is a person."

"She is a key."

Ethan stepped forward.

The black sword forming in his hand grew brighter.

Cassian’s gaze moved toward it.

"The Fourth Fragment has accepted you."

"It was already mine."

"No," Cassian said. "It was never yours."

The darkness around them trembled.

Behind Cassian, a massive shape moved among the golden eyes.

Ethan felt the Observer pressing against the borders of the palace.

It had not fully entered.

It was using Cassian as a doorway.

The man’s body carried a connection to something outside the world, but his soul was still his own.

For now.

Cassian looked at the sword in Ethan’s hand.

"The Fourth Fragment was created to bear the cost of sealing the First Door. It was not a weapon. It was a covenant."

Ethan remembered the battlefield.

The black sword.

The army of dead soldiers.

The choice he had made.

He had believed he was sacrificing his authority.

But the fragment had accepted something deeper.

His right to decide who should pay the price.

Cassian continued:

"When you abandoned that authority, the fragment became incomplete. It needed a new bearer."

"It chose me."

"It returned to its creator."

"Then why do you claim it was never mine?"

Cassian’s smile disappeared.

"Because the fragment did not belong to the person who created it. It belonged to the people who carried its consequences."

The black sword in Ethan’s hand trembled.

A voice echoed from within it.

**The price must be chosen.**

Ethan looked at Cassian.

"What did you do to it?"

"I preserved its other half."

The Fourth Fragment pulsed.

A second symbol appeared inside the black blade.

A white line surrounded by ash.

Cassian raised his hand.

The symbol on his chest answered.

The black sword in Ethan’s hand twisted violently.

Pain shot through his arm.

Elena moved toward him.

"Ethan!"

"Stay back."

The sword pulled toward Cassian as if it recognized him.

Ethan tightened his grip.

"Explain."

Cassian lowered his hand.

The sword stopped moving.

"The Fourth Fragment was divided into two functions. The black half carried the sacrifice. The white half carried the inheritance."

Ethan stared at him.

"You carry the white half."

"No."

Cassian touched the symbol on his chest.

"I carry the bloodline that was created to command it."

"The Veyr bloodline."

Cassian’s expression became proud.

"My family is not merely descended from Veyron. We were designed by him."

Noah frowned.

"Designed?"

Cassian looked at him.

"Veyron knew that Azeroth would eventually return. He needed an heir capable of controlling the fragments without possessing them."

"You are not his son," Ethan said.

Cassian’s eyes narrowed.

"I am his first successful descendant."

The words settled into the darkness.

Ethan remembered the young man from the underground chamber.

Lucian Veyr.

Veyron’s supposed son.

Lucian had carried the Door’s connection, but not the heir seal.

Cassian was different.

Cassian had inherited the command structure created by Veyron.

He was not a descendant in the ordinary sense.

He was a continuation of Veyron’s plan.

"A bloodline created to control the Fourth Fragment," Ethan said.

"And to identify the Fifth."

Ethan looked toward Princess Lyra.

Cassian smiled.

"The Fifth Fragment is not simply a fragment of power. It is the royal counterseal."

Professor Voss looked at the white flame.

"The Aurelian bloodline."

"Yes," Cassian replied. "The royal family was created for the same reason my family was created. Your line carried the key. Mine carried the hand that could turn it."

Elena’s face became pale.

"The royal family knew?"

"The first kings knew. The later generations forgot. They believed their bloodline represented divine right."

Cassian glanced at Lyra.

"They were not chosen to rule. They were chosen to guard the Fifth Fragment."

The princess struggled against the golden chains.

"Stop calling me a key!"

Cassian’s attention shifted toward her.

"You are more than a key, Princess. You are the only living vessel capable of containing the White Flame."

"I never agreed to this."

"Agreement is irrelevant."

Ethan’s expression darkened.

"That sounds familiar."

Cassian looked at him.

"You once said the same thing to entire kingdoms."

Ethan moved.

The black sword cut through the darkness.

Cassian raised his hand.

A white barrier appeared between them.

The sword struck it.

Black and white energy exploded across the hall.

The impact sent Ethan backward.

He landed on one knee.

His arm was numb.

Cassian had not moved.

Noah raised his knife.

"I think he is stronger than you."

Ethan glanced at him.

"Your observations are not always useful."

"That one seemed useful."

Cassian turned toward the others.

"Do you see now? He cannot control the Fourth Fragment. He cannot protect you."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Then we will protect one another."

Cassian laughed.

"You are children standing before a plan that has lasted a thousand years."

Adrian’s sword ignited with golden energy.

"My family has served the kingdom for three hundred years."

"Your family served the people who erased the truth."

Adrian froze.

Cassian continued:

"Your ancestor was one of the Seven Heroes. He did not defeat Azeroth. He helped Veyron deceive him."

Adrian’s grip tightened around his sword.

"That is a lie."

"Ask the records beneath the academy."

Adrian’s expression changed.

Ethan watched him carefully.

The revelation struck Adrian harder than any spell.

His entire identity was built around his family’s heroic history.

If Cassian was telling the truth, then the foundation of his life was false.

Elena stepped beside Adrian.

"Do not listen to him."

"What if he is telling the truth?"

"Then we discover it ourselves."

Cassian’s eyes moved toward her.

"House Frost also has a role."

Elena’s sword rose.

"What role?"

"Your family guarded the northern seal. The Sixth Fragment."

Ethan looked at her.

Elena’s face hardened.

"My family has never mentioned a fragment."

"Because your ancestors chose to forget."

"Or because you are lying."

Cassian smiled.

"That is the problem with truth. It sounds like a lie when people are not ready for it."

Professor Voss raised her staff.

"Enough."

A huge red magic circle formed behind Cassian.

Fire erupted across the darkness.

Cassian moved his hand.

The white flame above Lyra answered.

A wall of pale light swallowed the fire.

Professor Voss’s spell vanished.

Her eyes widened.

"The Fifth Fragment is amplifying his authority."

"No," Ethan said. "He is using Lyra as a filter."

Cassian looked at him.

"Correct."

"You are not controlling the White Flame."

"I do not need to."

"You are forcing it to interpret your commands through the royal bloodline."

"Exactly."

"The fragment is resisting."

"That is why the city is collapsing."

Ethan glanced toward Lyra.

The princess was trembling.

Black veins had spread across her neck.

Her eyes were filled with tears, but the white flame above her head continued to grow.

Cassian had connected her to the city’s entire magical system.

The palace barriers.

The communication crystals.

The streets.

The people.

All of them were feeding energy into the fragment.

He was turning the capital into a ritual.

"What is the purpose of the ritual?" Ethan asked.

Cassian looked at the golden eyes above them.

"To open the First Door."

The Observer’s presence pressed down.

The darkness beyond the palace shifted.

"Why?" Ethan asked.

"Because the world is dying."

"That is not a reason."

"It is the only reason that matters."

Cassian’s voice became more intense.

"The magical world is built on a wound. Every spell, every Mana Core, every Domain exists because the First Door leaked power into reality. The world is not stable. It is only pretending to be."

"The Door must remain closed."

"You sealed it with your soul, and what did that accomplish? You died. Your power scattered. The seals weakened. The Observer continued watching."

"The world survived."

"For one thousand years."

Cassian pointed toward Lyra.

"Now the Fifth Fragment has awakened. The Fourth has returned to you. The bloodline and the blade are finally in the same place."

Ethan understood.

Cassian did not want to possess the Fourth Fragment.

He wanted Ethan to use it.

The Sword could cut through the First Door.

The White Flame could expose and stabilize the passage.

Together, they could open the Door without destroying the world immediately.

Cassian needed Ethan as the final component.

The "king" had to choose the sacrifice.

"You want me to open the Door," Ethan said.

"I want you to finish what you began."

"I began a seal."

"You began a connection."

Cassian’s crystal companion opened.

Inside it was a miniature golden eye.

The Observer spoke through the crystal.

**The Door is not a prison.**

Ethan’s golden mark burned.

**It is a threshold.**

Cassian raised his hand.

The black sky split open.

A white line appeared above the palace.

The shape of the First Door.

Princess Lyra screamed.

The White Flame erupted.

A wave of energy spread through the capital.

The city’s magical barriers turned white.

Every citizen in Eldoria looked up at the sky.

The Royal Palace began to rise from the ground.

Cassian’s body shook as he forced more power through the bloodline seal.

The symbol on his chest cracked.

Blood ran from his mouth.

Ethan saw the truth.

Cassian was not in control.

The Observer was using him.

The white and black halves of the ritual were consuming his body.

"Cassian," Ethan said.

The man looked at him.

"You will die."

"I know."

"And the Fifth Fragment will not survive."

"I know."

"Then this is not about opening the Door."

Cassian’s expression changed.

Ethan continued:

"You want the Observer to enter through you."

Cassian remained silent.

"You do not want freedom. You want to become something beyond human."

The golden eyes above them opened wider.

Cassian’s voice became quiet.

"I want to see what lies beyond the world."

"You will not see it."

"Why not?"

"Because it will see you first."

The Observer spoke through the darkness.

**He has always been afraid.**

Cassian’s body twisted.

The black symbol on his chest spread across his face.

His eyes turned gold.

Ethan understood.

Cassian had not been the true heir.

He had been a prepared vessel.

Veyron had created a bloodline capable of carrying the Observer.

The Fifth Fragment was not the destination.

It was the beacon.

The Fourth Fragment was not the weapon.

It was the sacrifice.

The First Door was not being opened for freedom.

It was being opened to give the Observer a body.

Ethan stepped forward.

The Fourth Fragment burned in his hand.

Cassian raised his arms.

"Come, Azeroth."

The White Flame formed a ring around the palace.

"Use the Sword."

The black sky opened wider.

"Cut the Door."

The Observer’s voice filled the city.

**Choose who must pay.**

Ethan looked at Lyra.

The princess was trapped in the center of the ritual.

He looked at his companions.

Noah was standing beside him despite the terror in his eyes.

Elena held her sword with both hands.

Adrian was staring at Cassian, trying to decide whether his family had truly been part of the betrayal.

Professor Voss was preparing a spell she might not survive.

Then Ethan looked at Cassian.

The heir of Veyron.

The vessel of the Observer.

The man who believed he was choosing his own destiny.

Ethan raised the black sword.

Cassian smiled.

"Yes."

Ethan did not strike the Door.

He turned the blade.

The Fourth Fragment cut through the symbol on Cassian’s chest.

Black and white energy exploded.

Cassian screamed.

The bloodline seal shattered.

The ritual collapsed.

The White Flame above Lyra went dark.

The First Door in the sky began to close.

The golden eyes beyond it vanished one by one.

Cassian fell to his knees.

His body was covered in cracks of black light.

He looked at Ethan with disbelief.

"You chose me?"

"No."

Ethan walked toward him.

"I chose the person you were using."

He turned toward Princess Lyra.

The golden chains around her broke.

She fell.

Elena rushed forward and caught her.

The king and queen’s crystal prisons shattered.

The city’s magical systems began to return.

Cassian laughed weakly.

"You think this changes anything?"

Ethan stood before him.

"You are still alive."

"For now."

"You will tell us where the other fragments are."

Cassian looked up.

The black symbol on his face began to fade.

"You still think I am the one holding the map."

Ethan’s expression hardened.

Cassian’s eyes returned to their original color.

For a moment, he looked like an ordinary man.

Then he smiled.

"Veyron is not dead."

The palace shook.

A golden eye opened behind Cassian.

The Observer had not left completely.

Cassian whispered:

"He is waiting inside the Sixth Fragment."

The golden eye turned toward Ethan.

"And he has already found your next companion."

The eye vanished.

Cassian collapsed.

Ethan looked toward the palace entrance.

Outside, the city had begun to recover.

But the white flame was not gone.

A tiny spark remained above Princess Lyra’s hand.

The Fifth Fragment had chosen her permanently.

Elena helped the princess stand.

Lyra looked at Ethan.

"Thank you."

Ethan nodded.

Then the tiny white spark transformed into a symbol.

A sixth mark appeared in the air above the palace.

A black crown surrounded by chains.

The Fifth Fragment had revealed the location of the Sixth.

The symbol pointed north.

Toward House Frost.

Elena stared at it.

Her face became pale.

Cassian’s final words echoed through the palace:

**He has already found your next companion.**

Ethan looked at Elena.

Then at the northern symbol.

The truth about the Fourth and Fifth Fragments had been revealed.

The Fourth was the power of sacrifice, divided between Ethan’s sword and Veyron’s heir bloodline.

The Fifth was the White Flame, carried by the royal bloodline and now anchored to Princess Lyra.

But the ritual had not failed completely.

The Observer had learned their positions.

And the next fragment had chosen someone from Elena’s family.
