The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 23: The Road North
The white flame above the Royal Palace disappeared before sunrise.
The city of Eldoria slowly returned to normal.
The magical lamps reignited one by one. Communication crystals flickered back to life, and the white barriers surrounding the capital faded, revealing the gray sky beyond the palace towers.
But the people of Eldoria did not return to their ordinary lives.
Too many had seen the sky open.
Too many had heard the voice from beyond the First Door.
And too many had felt something ancient looking down at them.
The Royal Palace remained under lockdown.
Cassian Valehart was taken to a sealed chamber beneath the palace, where three Saints and twelve Grand Mages watched over him. The royal family was moved to a protected wing, and Princess Lyra refused to release the small white flame in her hand.
Ethan Vale stood in the palace courtyard with Noah, Elena, Adrian, Professor Voss, Seraphina, and the princess.
The northern symbol still hovered above the city.
A black crown surrounded by chains.
It pointed toward the territory of House Frost.
Elena had not spoken since the symbol appeared.
She stood beside the palace steps, her silver hair moving in the cold morning wind. Her expression was calm, but her right hand remained pressed against the black mark on her chest.
The mark had appeared when Veyron attempted to connect with her.
It was faint now.
But it had not disappeared.
Noah noticed Ethan looking at it.
"Is that mark dangerous?"
"Yes," Ethan said.
Elena looked at him.
"Thank you for the honesty."
"I am trying something new."
"Try explaining."
"The mark is not a wound. It is a contract."
Elena’s expression hardened.
"I never agreed to any contract."
"Your ancestors did."
"I am not my ancestors."
"The magic does not care."
Professor Voss walked toward them.
"Can it be removed?"
"Not easily."
"How difficult?"
Ethan looked at the mark.
"It is connected to the northern seal, the Sixth Fragment, and the Frost bloodline."
Professor Voss frowned.
"That sounds like three separate problems."
"It is one problem with three parts."
Noah raised his hand.
"Can we solve the problem by cutting off Elena’s arm?"
Elena turned toward him.
"Noah."
"What? I was asking."
Ethan considered the idea.
"No. The contract is connected to her soul."
Noah lowered his hand.
"I regret asking."
Princess Lyra approached them.
She was still wearing the white dress from the ritual, though a royal cloak had been placed over her shoulders. The small flame in her palm gave off a soft light.
It was not hot.
It did not burn her skin.
It simply followed her movements like a living star.
"The flame has been quiet since the palace was restored," Lyra said.
Ethan looked at it.
"The Fifth Fragment is adjusting to you."
"Is that good?"
"It means it has not rejected you."
"That does not sound reassuring."
"Most magical fragments are not reassuring."
Lyra glanced toward Elena.
"Can the Sixth Fragment be dangerous?"
"Yes."
"More dangerous than the Fifth?"
"Different."
"How?"
"The Fifth reveals and stabilizes. The Sixth preserves and controls."
Elena’s expression became colder.
"Controls what?"
Ethan looked toward the northern mountains.
"People, memories, contracts, and possibly souls."
Lyra’s grip tightened around the flame.
"Then we should go before it controls someone else."
Seraphina Crow approached from the palace entrance.
She carried a black crystal in one hand. The crystal displayed a moving map of the northern provinces.
"The royal airship will be ready in ten minutes."
Adrian Cross looked at the map.
"You are sending us directly to House Frost?"
"To the northern border."
Elena stepped forward.
"Not to my estate?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because the Frost estate has already been compromised."
The words made Elena go still.
Seraphina touched the crystal.
The map changed.
A red mark appeared over the northern province.
Then another.
And another.
Three villages had vanished from the kingdom’s communication network.
A fourth was surrounded by a field of black ice.
"Those villages are under House Frost’s protection," Elena said.
"They stopped responding last night."
"Why was I not told?"
"You were in the palace."
"You could have sent a message."
"The communication network was compromised."
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
"By Veyron?"
"Possibly."
Ethan studied the map.
The red marks formed a line.
They did not point toward the Frost estate.
They pointed around it.
"Those villages are not being attacked," he said.
Seraphina looked at him.
"What makes you think that?"
"The pattern."
The marks created a wide circle around the northern mountains.
"Something is establishing a boundary."
"A barrier?" Professor Voss asked.
"No. A territory."
The airship waited beyond the eastern courtyard.
It was larger than Ethan expected. Three silver hulls were connected by dark metal bridges, while six enormous crystals floated beneath the ship and generated the levitation field.
Princess Lyra boarded first.
Her guards followed.
Ethan, Noah, Elena, Adrian, and Professor Voss entered after her.
Seraphina remained on the ground.
Ethan looked back.
"You are not coming?"
"I am going to remain in Eldoria."
"You know Veyron is connected to the Sixth Fragment."
"I know."
"Then why are you staying?"
"Because the First Door is still unstable."
Ethan glanced at the sky.
The white line where the Door had appeared was no longer visible, but the air still carried traces of unnatural pressure.
"What are you expecting?"
"The Observer to try again."
"Through Cassian?"
"Perhaps."
"Or through you?"
Seraphina’s eyes moved to the golden mark over his heart.
"Perhaps."
Ethan stepped onto the ship.
Seraphina’s voice followed him.
"Do not trust the Frost family."
Elena heard her.
She turned sharply.
"Why?"
Seraphina did not answer.
The airship rose before Elena could ask again.
The palace courtyard shrank below them.
Eldoria spread beneath the ship, its towers reflecting the early sunlight. Smoke rose from several districts damaged by the ritual, and groups of healers moved through the streets.
Noah leaned over the railing.
"Do you think the palace will still be there when we return?"
"Probably."
"That is not certain."
"Very little is."
The airship moved north.
The city disappeared behind clouds.
The journey through the mountains would take several hours.
Ethan stood at the front of the deck, watching the landscape change below.
The green plains gave way to forests, then to gray hills covered in snow. The airship crossed several layers of magical barriers, each one stronger than the last.
House Frost ruled the northern provinces.
Their territory was rich in mana crystals, ancient ruins, and magical beasts. Their bloodline was famous for producing powerful ice mages.
Ethan had once known the Frost family.
Not this family.
The original House Frost had served the Moon Kingdom before its destruction.
Their final heir had died during the Ashen War.
The modern family must have been created after that.
Created by Veyron.
Ethan felt the Sixth Fragment pulling at the mark on Elena’s chest.
It was not calling him.
It was calling her.
Elena stood near the center of the deck, surrounded by a thin layer of frost.
The temperature around her had dropped several degrees.
Adrian was standing beside her.
"Does it hurt?" he asked.
Elena looked at him.
"No."
"Then what do you feel?"
"Someone is watching me."
Ethan approached.
"Veyron."
Elena looked toward the mountains.
"You are certain he is inside the fragment?"
"Cassian said so."
"You believe him?"
"He had no reason to lie after the bloodline seal was broken."
"People always have reasons to lie."
"He was afraid."
"That does not make him truthful."
"No. But it makes him useful."
Elena looked at Ethan.
"You sound like him."
"Who?"
"Veyron."
The air between them became cold.
Ethan did not react.
Elena continued:
"You treat everyone as a tool. Cassian. Seraphina. The fragments. Even us."
"I do not."
"You negotiated my life with Seraphina. You used Cassian’s information. You used Princess Lyra’s power to identify the ritual. You used my family’s connection to find the Sixth Fragment."
"I did not ask for your family’s contract."
"But you will use it."
Ethan was silent.
Elena stepped closer.
"You are still thinking like a king."
Ethan looked at the black mark on her chest.
"The difference is that you are allowed to say no."
"Am I?"
"Yes."
"Then I say no."
Ethan studied her.
"To what?"
"To being the door that leads you to Veyron."
"You are not a door."
"You just said my bloodline is a contract."
"It is."
"Then what am I?"
Ethan did not answer immediately.
The mountains below them were covered in white snow.
Far in the distance, a black storm moved against the wind.
The Sixth Fragment’s Domain.
"You are a person," Ethan said.
Elena’s expression changed slightly.
"And if being a person is inconvenient?"
"Then I will find another way."
"You will?"
"Yes."
"Even if it costs you the fragment?"
"Yes."
"Even if it costs you your life?"
Ethan looked at the golden mark over his heart.
"Yes."
Elena looked away.
Adrian watched the exchange in silence.
Noah moved closer to Ethan.
"That was almost reassuring."
"It was not meant to be."
"It was still better than usual."
The airship suddenly shook.
The crystals beneath the deck flickered.
A wave of black ice spread across the sky ahead.
The ship’s barrier activated.
The ice struck it.
A loud crack echoed through the air.
Professor Voss raised her staff.
"The barrier is failing!"
Ethan looked at the black storm.
The Domain was not simply freezing the air.
It was freezing movement.
The airship’s crystals were slowing.
The wind had stopped.
Even the falling snow remained suspended.
Ethan turned toward Elena.
The black mark on her chest was glowing.
A voice entered the ship.
Not through sound.
Through the frost.
**Come home.**
Elena’s body stiffened.
The frost around her spread.
Noah’s hand remained frozen halfway toward his knife.
Adrian’s sword stopped inches from its sheath.
Professor Voss’s spell circle hung motionless in the air.
Only Ethan and Elena could move.
The ship disappeared.
The deck became a frozen palace.
White pillars rose around them.
At the end of the hall stood a black throne.
A man sat upon it.
His face was hidden beneath a broken crown.
But his violet eyes were unmistakable.
Veyron.
Elena pulled her hand away from Ethan.
"You brought him here."
"No."
Veyron smiled.
"She brought me."
The mark on Elena’s chest opened like an eye.
A thin line of white light connected it to the throne.
Ethan raised the black sword.
Veyron did not move.
"I have waited a long time, my king."
"You were never my king."
"You gave me the Crown."
"I gave you knowledge."
"And you expected loyalty in return."
"I expected judgment."
Ethan raised the sword.
"Then let us see how much freedom you have left."
Veyron stood from the throne.
The frozen palace cracked around him.
The Sixth Fragment appeared behind his body as a massive black crystal.
Inside it, countless memories moved like trapped stars.
Veyron placed one hand against the crystal.
The mark on Elena’s chest burned.
She fell to one knee.
Ethan moved toward her.
Veyron smiled.
"Choose, Azeroth."
The frozen palace began to collapse.
"Save the girl."
The black crystal opened.
"Or come and take your memory."
Inside the fragment, Ethan saw a scene.
Seraphina.
Veyron.
Evelyn.
And himself.
Standing before the First Door.
The memory that had been removed.
The memory that explained why Seraphina had feared him.
Ethan stopped.
Veyron’s voice echoed through the collapsing palace.
"You want the truth."
The black crystal widened.
"Then come inside."
The frozen world shattered.
The airship returned.
Ethan was standing on the deck, his sword raised.
Elena was unconscious beside him.
The black storm was directly ahead.
And from within it, a massive palace of ice emerged.
The Frost estate.
Its gates opened.
A voice echoed across the mountains.
"Welcome home, Ethan."
The airship’s engines died.
The vessel began to fall.
And beneath the frozen palace, the Sixth Fragment opened its eye.
