The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 21: The White Flame

  • Next Chapter

The white flame rose above the Royal Palace.

It did not burn like ordinary fire.

It did not flicker.

It stood perfectly still above the capital, a pillar of pale light that reached into the clouds. Every tower in Eldoria reflected its glow, turning the city into a landscape of silver and shadow.

Then another district went dark.

And another.

The lights disappeared one by one, moving outward from the palace like a spreading infection.

Students gathered near the academy windows.

Professors shouted orders in the corridors.

The protective barriers around Eldoria activated, forming layers of golden light around the city walls.

The white flame did not react.

It simply remained above the palace.

Waiting.

Ethan Vale stood beside the cracked classroom window.

The mark of the Fourth Fragment had appeared around his wrist, forming the shape of a broken black sword. It was still warm from the sacrifice he had made inside the memory.

The Crown.

The Witness.

Knowledge.

The Sword.

Four fragments had awakened.

And the Fifth had chosen a host in the center of the capital.

Noah Blake stared at the palace.

"Is that supposed to happen?"

"No."

"People keep saying that today."

"It remains true."

Noah looked at Ethan.

"The voice said, ’Come and take me.’"

"Yes."

"That sounds like an invitation."

"It is."

"Then why does it feel like a trap?"

"Because it is."

Noah sighed.

"I preferred the academy when it was only trying to kill us."

Elena Frost stepped away from the window.

"The royal palace is surrounded by the strongest barriers in the kingdom. The royal family has several Archmages protecting it, and at least one Saint is stationed there."

"Then the Fifth Fragment chose a powerful host," Adrian Cross said.

"Or it chose the person best protected from interference," Elena replied.

Ethan studied the white flame.

The Fifth Fragment was not simply releasing energy.

It was making an announcement.

Every mage in the capital could feel it.

The mana inside the flame carried a signature that reached across the city, touching every magical network and communication crystal.

The fragment wanted to be found.

More importantly, it wanted Ethan to come.

Professor Aurelia Voss entered the classroom.

Her staff had been repaired, but the tip was still covered with cracks.

"The academy is under complete lockdown," she said. "No student is permitted to leave their assigned building."

Noah raised his hand.

Professor Voss looked at him.

"Yes?"

"Does that include going to the palace to investigate an ancient fragment?"

"Yes."

"What if the fragment is dangerous?"

"That is precisely why you are not leaving."

"What if Ethan goes?"

"Then you will not follow him."

Noah lowered his hand.

He looked at Ethan.

"I may have a scheduling conflict."

Professor Voss walked toward the window.

"The royal guard has already been mobilized. The palace is under attack, but the attackers have not breached the outer walls."

"Who is attacking?" Elena asked.

"We do not know."

"The white flame?"

"Possibly."

Ethan looked at the darkening city.

"No."

Professor Voss turned toward him.

"You are certain?"

"The flame is not attacking the palace."

"Then what is happening?"

"It is disabling the city."

Another district went dark.

The lights surrounding the academy flickered.

Professor Voss’s expression became tense.

"Why?"

"The host is cutting the capital off from the outside."

Adrian frowned.

"To protect itself?"

"To prevent anyone from escaping."

A deep sound moved through the academy.

The protective barriers surrounding the city shook.

Every student in the corridor went silent.

The white flame above the palace expanded.

For a moment, the sky became completely white.

Then a wave of light swept across Eldoria.

Every magical device in the academy shut down.

Communication crystals went dark.

The floating screens shattered.

The protective barriers flickered.

Professor Voss raised her staff.

A red shield formed around the classroom.

The wave struck it.

The shield cracked.

Noah grabbed the edge of a desk.

"I thought the academy was protected."

"It is," Professor Voss said.

"Then why is the protection breaking?"

"Because the thing outside is not attacking the barrier."

The red shield shattered.

Professor Voss took a step backward.

"It is rewriting the rule that allows the barrier to exist."

Ethan felt the Knowledge Fragment react.

The Fifth Fragment was not using ordinary destructive magic.

It was changing definitions.

The same type of authority he had once possessed.

The white flame was rewriting the relationship between the city and its defenses.

A message appeared in the air.

**THE CITY IS SEALED.**

Beneath it, another sentence appeared.

**THE KING MUST ENTER ALONE.**

Noah looked at Ethan.

"That seems personal."

"It is."

Professor Voss turned toward Seraphina.

The Headmistress had entered the classroom without anyone noticing.

Her golden ring was glowing, and her eyes were fixed on the message.

"What do you know?" Professor Voss asked.

Seraphina ignored the question.

She looked at Ethan.

"The Fifth Fragment has chosen a host who can manipulate the laws of light."

"Not light," Ethan said. "Recognition."

Seraphina’s expression sharpened.

Ethan continued:

"The white flame is not illuminating the city. It is forcing every magical system to acknowledge its presence. Once the city accepts it as an authority, it can control the barriers, the roads, the communication networks, and eventually the people."

Elena frowned.

"Can it control minds?"

"Not directly."

"Then why are you worried?"

"Because it does not need to control minds if it controls everything around them."

Seraphina stepped closer.

"You understand its structure."

"I understand the principle."

"Then you know what must be done."

"The host must be separated from the fragment."

Seraphina’s gaze moved toward the palace.

"That may kill the host."

"Possibly."

Noah looked between them.

"Who is the host?"

No one answered.

Ethan focused on the white flame.

For a brief moment, he felt the Fifth Fragment through the city’s mana network.

A consciousness brushed against his.

It felt calm.

Not cold like the Observer.

Not violent like the Crown.

It felt sorrowful.

The Fifth Fragment was afraid.

Its host was not controlling it.

The fragment was trying to protect the host from something inside the palace.

Ethan closed his eyes.

A vision appeared.

A young woman standing in a white chamber.

She wore a royal dress covered in silver embroidery.

Her hands were bound by golden chains.

A white flame floated above her head.

Behind her stood a tall figure in black armor.

Its face was hidden.

The woman looked toward Ethan.

"Do not come."

The vision vanished.

Ethan opened his eyes.

"Who is the host?"

Seraphina stared at him.

"Princess Lyra Aurelian."

Noah’s eyes widened.

"The Crown Princess?"

"The only person in the palace with enough authority to awaken the Fifth Fragment," Seraphina said.

Elena’s expression tightened.

"Why would the fragment choose her?"

"Because the royal bloodline descends from the original guardians of the First Door."

Ethan looked at the white flame.

The Crown Princess was not controlling the fragment.

She was being used as an anchor.

"What is inside the palace?" he asked.

Seraphina did not answer.

Professor Voss did.

"The king’s advisor, Lord Cassian, arrived from the northern provinces three days ago. Since then, the palace has been under restricted access."

Ethan turned toward her.

"Cassian?"

"Cassian Valehart. He is a Grand Mage and the royal family’s chief magical advisor."

"Is he connected to the fragments?"

"No evidence."

"Then he is."

Noah looked at Ethan.

"That is your entire method of investigation?"

"It has worked so far."

Seraphina raised her hand.

A black portal formed at the center of the classroom.

Ethan looked at it.

"You can open a path through the city barrier?"

"Not for long."

"What is the price?"

Seraphina’s golden eyes became cold.

"Your companions remain here."

"No."

"The city is sealed. The Fifth Fragment specifically demanded that you enter alone."

"Then it has already identified the wrong target."

Seraphina stepped toward him.

"You cannot take them."

"I can."

"You surrendered your authority. You cannot command the fragments as you once did."

"I do not need to command them."

The Fourth Fragment pulsed.

The black sword mark around his wrist released a thin line of dark light.

The portal widened.

Noah immediately moved beside Ethan.

Seraphina looked at him.

"You heard the order."

"I did."

"You cannot enter the palace."

"I know."

"Then why are you coming?"

Noah looked at Ethan.

"Because he will make terrible decisions alone."

Ethan frowned.

"I make terrible decisions with company as well."

"That is exactly why I am coming."

Elena stepped forward.

"I will go."

Seraphina’s expression hardened.

"House Frost has no authority to interfere in royal affairs."

"My family has authority over northern magical law. If the palace is compromised, House Frost will be blamed for failing to detect it."

"That is a political concern."

"It is also personal."

Elena looked at Ethan.

"If the Fifth Fragment is connected to the First Door, my family may know something about it."

Adrian rested his hand on his sword.

"I am coming too."

Ethan looked at him.

"Why?"

Adrian’s gaze was steady.

"Because I want to see whether you can actually save someone without sacrificing everyone else."

Ethan considered the four of them.

Noah.

Elena.

Adrian.

Professor Voss.

The Fifth Fragment had demanded that he enter alone.

That meant the host was vulnerable to groups.

Or it meant the fragment knew that Ethan would sacrifice his companions if necessary.

The Observer whispered inside his mind.

**They will slow you down.**

Ethan ignored it.

Seraphina looked toward Professor Voss.

"You will remain here."

Professor Voss shook her head.

"I am responsible for these students."

"You will be responsible for keeping the academy alive."

"The academy is not my only responsibility."

Seraphina’s expression changed slightly.

Professor Voss stepped toward the portal.

"I am coming."

The Headmistress looked at Ethan.

"You understand what will happen if the city barrier closes behind you."

"Yes."

"You may not be able to return."

"I know."

"The royal guard may attack you."

"I know."

"Princess Lyra may already be lost."

Ethan’s gaze remained fixed on the white flame.

"Then we will find out."

Seraphina finally moved aside.

"Go."

Ethan stepped through the portal.

The others followed.

The world changed.

They appeared in a narrow street near the Royal Palace.

The city was dark.

Not nighttime dark.

The magical lamps had stopped working, the communication crystals were dead, and every building stood beneath the cold glow of the white flame.

The streets were empty.

No civilians.

No guards.

No sound except the distant ringing of alarms.

Ethan looked toward the palace.

The outer walls were covered in white fire.

The gates stood open.

That was not normal.

"Why are the gates open?" Elena asked.

"Because the palace wants us inside," Ethan said.

Noah looked at him.

"Why does everyone in this city want us to walk into traps?"

"Because we keep doing it."

They advanced through the empty streets.

The white flame above the palace grew brighter as Ethan approached.

The golden mark over his heart responded.

The four fragments inside his Mana Core stirred.

The Crown.

The Witness.

Knowledge.

The Sword.

For the first time, they reacted to another fragment as if recognizing a distant relative.

The Fifth Fragment sent a pulse through the city.

A sentence appeared across the palace wall.

**ETHAN VALE.**

Then the letters changed.

**AZEROTH VEYR.**

The group stopped.

The palace doors opened.

A man stood inside.

He was tall, dressed in a white military uniform, with silver hair and a calm expression. A thin crystal floated above his right shoulder.

Ethan recognized the mana immediately.

Not the Fifth Fragment.

Something else.

Something familiar.

The man bowed.

"Welcome to the Royal Palace."

Professor Voss raised her staff.

"Identify yourself."

The man smiled.

"Lord Cassian Valehart."

Elena’s hand moved toward her sword.

"The king’s advisor."

"Yes."

Ethan looked past him.

The palace hall was covered in white fire.

At the far end stood Princess Lyra, bound in golden chains.

The white flame floated above her head.

Behind her, the king and queen were frozen inside transparent crystals.

Cassian stepped aside.

"The Fifth Fragment has chosen its vessel."

Ethan looked at the Princess.

Her eyes were open.

She was conscious.

Terrified.

Cassian continued:

"And it has requested your presence."

Ethan stepped forward.

Cassian raised one hand.

A wall of white light appeared between them.

The light did not burn.

It erased.

The edge of Ethan’s coat vanished where it touched.

Noah pulled him backward.

"That wall is dangerous."

"Yes."

Cassian smiled.

"You cannot enter."

Ethan studied the spell.

It was not a barrier.

It was a declaration.

The light defined everything beyond it as unrecognized.

Anything that crossed the boundary would cease to exist in the palace’s magical system.

Ethan had seen a similar spell before.

A spell he had created.

A spell designed to exclude gods.

His expression became cold.

"Where did you learn that?"

Cassian’s smile widened.

"From you."

The white flame above Princess Lyra flared.

Her voice echoed through the hall.

"Please..."

Cassian turned toward her.

"Do not be afraid, Your Highness. The king has returned."

Ethan’s hand closed around the black sword mark on his wrist.

The Fourth Fragment awakened.

A dark blade began to form in his hand.

Cassian’s calm expression finally changed.

Ethan stepped toward the wall of white light.

The blade touched it.

White fire and black darkness collided.

The palace shook.

The Fifth Fragment screamed through the city.

The words appeared above the throne:

**THE HOST IS NOT THE ENEMY.**

Ethan looked at Cassian.

"Then you are."

Cassian’s crystal companion opened like an eye.

A black symbol appeared across his chest.

The same symbol Veyron had carried.

Cassian smiled.

"Not the enemy."

The white light behind him twisted.

"I am the heir."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

"Another heir?"

Cassian raised both hands.

The palace walls disappeared.

Beyond them was not the city.

It was a black sky filled with golden eyes.

The Observer had found another opening.

Cassian’s voice echoed through the hall.

"The Fifth Fragment is only the bait."

The white flame above Princess Lyra turned black.

"And you have walked directly into the trap."
