Chapter 185 - start of the succession

We all went and ate breakfast. Since Mom didn’t mention yesterday’s events, I stayed quiet as well and ate my breakfast.

I asked, "Mom, what’s happening today with the succession?"

Mom smiled and looked at Amy. "Ask her. She knows."

My eyes widened, and I looked at her. "Amy, you knew? Tell me."

She just laughed, and a playful smile appeared on her face as she said, "You’ll find out soon."

My eyes twitched. "Ahh, this is so unfair. Tell me too."

Mom just shrugged with a helpless expression. "You don’t participate, so you’ll have to find out in time."

I pouted at that.

Everyone laughed as we finished breakfast.

And Grandma added, "The first stage is already over."

My eyes twitched as I looked at her. "What do you mean it’s over?"

"I want to watch it too."

Grandma just laughed at that and said, "It’s not a combat test, Gray. It’s about how well they handle difficult situations, and we look at whether they have the qualities to lead the family."

"Power is important to be the head, but if that person only has power with no brain, the family is doomed."

I nodded and pointed at Amy. "Did she fail that? After all, her brain is..."

Amy gave me a death glare. "Go on, Gray. Finish what you’re going to say."

I gulped. "Ahh, it’s nothing important. Never mind."

Grandma laughed a little, then said, "How about I give you a few hints, my precious grandson?"

I nodded with enthusiasm.

Mom looked at Grandma and said, "Mom...!"

Grandma nodded. "Alright, already. I won’t tell."

"See, grandson? Your mom is the one who won’t let me tell. I want to tell."

Mom looked at Grandma, turning all the blame to her, then she looked at me.

I nodded. "Hmm, that’s fine too. Mysteries are fun too."

Then I got up from the dining table with Luna, went to Amy’s side, and left together.

Grandma sighed after we left. "Hey, Seraphina, what did you do to your son? No matter what I did, he never even glared at you."

Mom just smiled a warm smile. "Hmm, you haven’t seen him yet. Gray is very stubborn, but he understands his limits and behaves."

Grandma just looked at Mom, speechless. "Knows his limits? That brat went and almost killed Lucas."

Mom just shrugged. "Yeah, that’s included in his limits. Even if he killed him, why should I care?"

"Gray is my son. He can do whatever he wants, but just because of that, he doesn’t go overboard. I’m proud of my son. He is the best son one could ask for."

Grandma just sighed. "Aaa, you two are impossible."

Then Mom and Grandma went too, to the last test of the succession. The strongest would win the position of the next head.

All the competitors were evaluated and chosen for the last test.

So me, Amy, Elena, and Luna came to the training room where the assessment was held.

And we saw many of them with similar features to us, while some had different features, standing in the training ground.

Then I saw an audience in there as well. I got a little confused. Why was there an audience? Isn’t this succession supposed to be secret?

I just shrugged and looked at Amy, and she gave us a nod and went to stand with the other members.

I looked at sister Elena and said, "How about we go and watch from the side?"

She nodded, so Luna and I followed her to the side.

I asked sister Elena, "Do you know what’s going to happen?"

She smiled and asked, "You still didn’t give up on it, huh?"

I just grinned. "I can figure out half of it. There’s a fight, but I don’t know which kind of fight."

Elena smiled and said, "Hmm, I don’t know either."

Then Luna looked at the other spectators and said, "They look like our age. Is there something to do with the test?"

I looked at them as well and nodded. "Might be, but we have to wait for the start."

She nodded. While watching them, I grabbed a grape juice and gave it to her.

She glared at me. "Where’s my orange juice?"

I just shrugged and said, "If you drink orange juice all the time, you’ll get tired of it soon. So change the drinks often. Then when you get an orange juice, you’ll be excited."

"If not, it’ll feel bland."

She thought for a moment and nodded. "Hmm, that makes sense."

Then she took her first sip and nodded. "Hmm, tasty."

Then I gave sister Elena one too, but I asked her preference before giving it to her.

Luna glared at me once again. "Hey, why didn’t you ask me before giving me my juice?"

I just shrugged. "What’s there to ask? You only drink that orange juice of yours, so it’s useless to ask because the answer is obvious."

Sister Elena laughed. "Good one."

Luna glared at me. "I drink other drinks as well."

A smile appeared on my face. "Oh? Tell me one."

She stammered. "Aa... aa..."

Then she saw her grape juice and immediately said, "Like grape juice and apple juice."

We both laughed at Luna.

She puffed out her cheeks like a hamster and asked, "Why are you two laughing?"

Elena said mid-laugh, "Nothing, nothing. We laugh because of how cute you are."

Then she pinched Luna’s cheeks.

Luna just looked away.

Then Mom and the other branch family heads arrived in the room.

I looked at them, and all the people participating to be the next candidate for head of the family looked at them because they knew this was the moment.

Then Mom announced the beginning of the succession.

All of their eyes sharpened. There were boys and girls in this. All of them looked like they were ready to take anything that came at them.

Then Mom said, "All the participants know the rules. This is a one-on-one battle. As for those who have an age gap, we give you a solution."

"You can’t battle with someone younger than you. You have to choose someone to be your proxy."

"This is announced beforehand, so you have time for preparation."

"As for the younger ones, you can choose someone of another age to be your proxy."

"As a leader, you have to have the ability to command others and have allies and people who follow you."

"If you can’t find anyone, you are disqualified."

They nodded.

And I listened to it and nodded. "Hmm, interesting."

Then I watched the middle of the room as all the watchers went to the side of my cousins.

I stayed there for a moment and looked at Amy. In the next moment, I was in front of her.

"Hey, Amy, why didn’t you tell me this? Let me choose as the one to take care of the younger ones."

Amy blinked, and she sensed my teleport and sighed. "Ahh, but you..."

I looked at her. "What? Do you think I’m weak or something? Don’t worry. In my age group, I’m invincible. No one can do a thing to me."

Other participants looked at me and frowned because I directly said, "I’m the strongest. No one can do a thing to me."

They glared at me. I didn’t bother to look at them. My eyes stayed on Amy.

As for Luna and Elena, they couldn’t participate. They were princesses. No matter how close they were, they couldn’t just go and participate in this.

Amy thought for a moment. "I have no objections, but you are supposed to be a candidate."

I shook my head. "Nah, I don’t wanna be head of the position. It’s so boring."

Mom’s eyes twitched, and the others looked at me with gaping mouths.

Amy just sighed and nodded. "Okay, I choose you as my proxy."

Then she said, "But, Gray, you have to take on someone one year older than you."

I just shrugged. "So what? If I use my all, I can even fight you for a long time."

She snorted. "That’s because I haven’t awakened my class and physique yet."

I looked at her in confusion. "You have a bloodline?"

She nodded with a smug expression. "Yeah, I awakened one."

I looked at her with wide eyes. "Not fair! Why didn’t you tell me?"

She just shrugged. "It’s no big deal."

My eyes twitched. I knew Amy. She wasn’t going to awaken a half ass bloodline. It must be something absurd.

Then I looked at the other participants with a predatory grin. They were all my prey. This succession was in Amy’s hands. She will be the winner.
