Chapter 49: The Iron-Class Port and the Innkeeper's Proposition

  • Next Chapter

The back booth of the Salty Kraken was swallowed in a thick veil of pipe smoke and the low, rumbling chatter of dockworkers and smugglers. Zevryn slid into the shadowed alcove, his hand resting casually in his pocket where the dark iron ring, and Vax's silent, watchful consciousness, hummed faintly against his finger.

Across the scarred wooden table sat the innkeeper, a grizzled broker with a patch over his left eye and fingers stained with ink and old brine. Without a word, the man pulled a folded, grease-stained parchment from beneath his leather vest and slid it across the grain.

Zevryn unfolded it with a slow, deliberate motion, his pale eyes scanning the cramped script.

"We dug deeper into the merchant manifests and the coded ledgers you intercepted," the innkeeper murmured, his voice barely audible over the clinking of ale mugs. "Xalthar isn't operating alone in this. He is merely an advance scout for a much larger apparatus."

The innkeeper tapped a calloused finger against a circled name on the parchment.

"The first major apex name we uncovered is Malor," the innkeeper said grimly. "Unlike Port Vandermir, which sits comfortably in the wealthy, highly regulated 'silver-and-gold' tier of trade and governance, Malor rules his underworld from an iron-class port city. A lawless, brutal sinkhole called Gore-Tide Reach, where scrap-iron, blood-steel, and slave-galleys are the only currency that matters."

Zevryn’s gaze narrowed. An iron-class port city meant raw, unbridled savagery backed by industrial-scale military power, completely distinct from Vandermir’s polite facade of councils and merchant houses. If Malor was anchoring his operations in Gore-Tide Reach and funneling subversion through Xalthar into Vandermir, it meant the shadow war was part of a much grander territorial expansion.

"Gore-Tide Reach," Zevryn repeated quietly, tasting the name on his tongue. "A harsh breeding ground for cutthroats."

"The harshest," the innkeeper replied, leaning back into the shadows. "Malor uses it as a staging ground to bleed silver-and-gold ports dry from the inside out, utilizing local traitors like the Shadow Council to secure a foothold."

Zevryn committed every detail to memory, letting the silence settle for a moment before reaching into his coat and pulling out a heavy leather pouch jingling with dense silver coin. He tossed it onto the table.

"For the intel. What do I owe you?" Zevryn asked flatly.

The innkeeper stared at the heavy pouch, then slowly pushed it back across the table with two fingers. A thin, knowing smile crept across his scarred face.

"Keep your silver, Zevryn," the innkeeper said, his single eye glinting in the dim candlelight. "I don't want your coin today. I have a proposal for you instead."
