Chapter 48: Binding the Gargoyle and the Taproom Summons

  • Next Chapter

The small creature writhing within the sigil-lit containment field looked less like a traditional demon and more like a grotesque, living carving. No taller than a human forearm, it possessed the stony, scaled hide of a miniature gargoyle, with bat-like ears folded flat against its skull and jagged claws clutching at nothing.

Zevryn stared down at it coldly, letting the silence press heavily against the room's multi-layered wards.

"What are you?" Zevryn's voice was a low, even murmur.

The gargoyle bared pointed, obsidian teeth, its glowing amber eyes flickering with spite even through its terror. "I am the eyes of the deep shadows! The whisper in the dark! Bonded to the ring, I am the phantom scout, the veil of absolute stealth and silent espionage!"

It was a rare and dangerous utility asset. When bonded properly, the entity within the ring didn't just grant combat resonance; it could detach its awareness, slipping unseen through enemy walls as a living spy, feeding sight and sound straight back to the wearer while masking their presence completely in the surrounding gloom.

"A useful skill," Zevryn noted dryly. "For a leash-holder. Give me your true name."

The gargoyle curled into a tighter ball, hissing defiantly. "Never! A demon's true name is its chain, you cannot simply..."

Zevryn didn't argue. His fingers moved with terrifying speed across the workbench, dipping a silver stylus into a vial of glowing, iridescent ink. With a flick of his wrist, he traced an intricate, razor-sharp binding sigil in the air above the desk.

"If you prefer a harder chain, so be it," Zevryn said coldly, chanting a sharp, guttural cadence in ancient infernal syntax.

The floating sigil flashed with blinding white light, searing down toward the creature.

"Wait! Wait! Vax!" the gargoyle shrieked, panic cracking its defiant facade as the magic bore down. "My short name is Vax! Just Vax!"

The sigil slammed downward, pinning the miniature gargoyle against the desk. Zevryn pressed his thumb onto the glowing nexus of the symbol, driving the arcane geometry straight into the creature's skull. A flash of smoke and a sharp hiss echoed through the study as the rune permanently embedded itself into Vax's stony forehead, burning away its free will and locking its soul into an absolute master-servant covenant.

The creature stopped thrashing instantly. Its amber eyes cleared, losing their manic terror and settling into a flat, unblinking glare of total, unswerving devotion.

Vax raised its small claws to its forehead, bowing its head deeply against the wood.

"At your command, Master," Vax whispered, its voice now smooth, subservient, and entirely loyal. "My stealth is yours. My eyes are yours."

Zevryn tested the mental tether, feeling the cold, silent pulse of the gargoyle's espionage network link directly to the back of his mind. Satisfied, he slipped the dark iron ring onto his finger. The subtle hum of combat resonance and shadow-cloaking settled smoothly against his skin.

He cleared the protective wards with a wave of his hand, extinguishing the sigils on the floor before stepping out of his private study. In the common area, Xel was quietly polishing a set of silver utensils, glancing up with a respectful, professional nod as Zevryn passed.

"I am heading out," Zevryn said briefly.

"Safe travels, Master," Xel replied without missing a beat.

Stepping out into the cooling twilight of Port Vandermir, Zevryn pulled his heavy cloak around his shoulders. The shadows of the lower district lengthened as he navigated the winding cobblestone alleys, making his way directly toward the pulsing hearth-light and muted noise of the Salty Kraken.

The taproom was bustling with its usual mix of sailors, merchants, and low-level brokers when Zevryn pushed open the heavy timber door. The innkeeper, a scarred veteran with sharp eyes hidden behind the haze of pipe smoke, immediately motioned him toward a secluded back booth.

It was time to see what new threads the underworld had unraveled.
