The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 47: The Butler of the Shadows
The heavy oak door clicked shut, sealing out the fading laughter and departing footsteps of Lord Valerius, Master Marrok, Master Aldous, and their sons. Silence settled back over the safehouse courtyard, broken only by the faint rustle of the morning breeze against the stone walls.
Inside the common area, the sharp-eyed stranger who had quietly managed the morning spread stepped forward from the serving alcove. He bowed smoothly, his movements practiced and entirely devoid of the clumsy hesitation typical of a common domestic servant.
"Apologies, Master," the man said, his voice low and even. "The merchant visit was a sudden schedule. And since Ren was required as the sparring pupil for Julian, the innkeeper of the Salty Kraken instructed me to step in and substitute."
Zevryn looked down at him with an unblinking, cold gaze. He had already suspected the infiltration when he first walked into the room, and his intuition had been entirely correct. The underworld's reach was long, and Port Vandermir’s taverns kept close tabs on every rising power in the district.
"I expected as much," Zevryn replied flatly. He walked toward his desk, shedding his tactical authority just enough to lay down new operational parameters. "Listen closely. Make this a standard arrangement. When Ren is undergoing her tactical and physical training in the morning, you will assume this role and manage the household duties."
The man kept his head bowed, listening intently.
"For lunch and later hours, Ren will return to her proper place to serve me," Zevryn continued. "And during the upcoming school days, she will handle and maintain the school preparations in the morning before training begins."
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
The stranger bowed lower, folding his hands across his chest.
"Understood, Master. It shall be as you command." He paused, straightening slightly with a faint, knowing smirk playing at the edge of his lips. "My name is Xel. By the way, the innkeeper of the Salty Kraken also requests a brief meeting with you today, whenever you have the time to stop by the taproom."
Zevryn's pale eyes narrowed slightly. The tavern keeper had already helped decode the dark elf ledger; a second summons meant something new had surfaced, either from the ciphers or from the shifting power structures of the Shadow Council.
Zevryn gave a single, curt nod of dismissal. "Tell him I will be there before nightfall."
Once Xel withdrew to manage the hall, Zevryn retreated into his private study. Rows of glass vials, bubbling retorts, and delicate brass alchemical equipment lined the back workbench. Locking the heavy door behind him, he sat down at the central desk and placed the dark iron ring recovered from the lich's defeat upon the wood.
Though it possessed a combat resonance rune, Zevryn harbored no illusions about gear salvaged from an undead abomination. He had no intention of wearing an artifact that might harbor hidden necrotic properties or a malicious intelligence that could not be fully contained.
With precise, sweeping hand gestures, he etched a series of arcane sigils across the stone floor and walls, weaving tight, multi-layered wards that completely isolated and hermetically sealed the chamber. Satisfied that the room was entirely soundproof and warded against spiritual leakage, Zevryn pressed his thumb against the cold metal and murmured a low, complex chant in ancient dark elf magic.
The ring instantly flared, vibrating violently against the desktop. A sharp, agonizing shriek pierced the air as a tiny, bound demonic entity materialized within the arcane field, writhing in pure terror.
“Don’t, don’t, Master! Don’t destroy me!” the entity shrieked, its voice scratching against the edges of his mind.
Zevryn's expression remained completely impassive, his pale eyes staring down at the writhing wretch with absolute coldness.
