Chapter 46: Sponsorship, Sparring, and Strangers at the Table

The morning sun had barely cleared the slate rooftops of Port Vandermir when a sharp knock echoed against the heavy oak door of Zevryn’s safehouse.

When Zevryn unlatched the lock, Master Aldous stood on the threshold, accompanied by his young son, Julian. But they were not alone. Two impeccably dressed, wealthy merchants stood flanked behind them, each with a teenage son in tow, both boys roughly Julian’s age, wearing expensive, tailored fencing doublets that looked entirely unsuited for actual combat.

"Zevryn, my good man," Aldous boomed with a practiced, politician’s smile. "I hope we aren't intruding. Word of Julian’s sudden edge in physical conditioning has traveled fast through the Merchant Council. These gentlemen here, Lord Valerius and Master Marrok, insisted on seeing your methods firsthand."

Zevryn’s pale eyes flicked past them, assessing the newcomers with a cold, detached gaze. "Enter."

As the group stepped into the common area, Zevryn noticed something peculiar. Reniah, his mute servant girl who ordinarily handled the morning chores, was nowhere near the kitchen. Instead, a quiet, sharp-eyed stranger, a man Zevryn immediately recognized as an operative from the local tavern, was calmly arranging porcelain cups, pouring steaming black coffee, and setting out an early light breakfast. The man moved with practiced ease, as if he had known precisely when the merchants would arrive.

Zevryn didn't bat an eye. He simply filed the underworld infiltration of his space away as a reminder of how tightly the merchant class and the shadows intertwined, ignoring the tavern hand entirely and turning his focus to his guests.

"Sit if you must," Zevryn said flatly. "The yard is out back."

Out in the sunlit courtyard, Zevryn maintained his strict, unyielding demeanor. Rather than forcing the visitors into the dirt right away, he wanted them to witness the standard. He signaled to Julian and Reniah, stepping back to let them demonstrate the brutal, fluid rhythm of his instruction.

Reniah and Julian took their positions for a live sparring drill. There was no hesitation or theatrical posturing. Reniah moved with a silent, disciplined grace, her form anchored by the clean foundational stance Zevryn had drilled into her, while Julian pushed hard to match the pace, trading measured strikes with wooden training rods that cracked like thunder against the flagstones.

The two visiting merchant sons stood on the sidelines, watching with wide, transfixed eyes. They were used to pampered tutors who pulled their punches; watching a real, high-intensity exchange between peers made them swallow hard, realizing just how serious this training truly was.

Once the spar concluded, Julian and Reniah stepped back, breathing heavily but holding their composure.

Valerius and Marrok rushed forward, practically vibrating with excitement, entirely won over by what they had just witnessed.

"Magnificent!" Marrok declared, clapping his hands together. "Absolute discipline and lethal form. Zevryn, my boy Marcus needs this exact training. We want our sons to join your school. Name your tuition."

Zevryn wiped a faint sheen of dust from his sleeve, offering a calculated hesitation.

"I must decline," Zevryn said, his tone firm. "My house is a modest safehouse. It cannot handle a large group of people, nor do I have the space to run a formal academy."

Valerius waved a dismissive hand, grinning broadly. "Oh, is that all? We will sponsor the school! Do not worry about coin, Zevryn. We will find a proper place for it close to this neighborhood. In fact, if you want, we can buy the large estate directly beside you, it has ample courtyard space and more than enough rooms for a full academy."

The two visiting sons looked at each other with wide, thrilled eyes, completely enamored by the idea of training under such a formidable mercenary. Even Julian puffed out his chest proudly, standing shoulder to shoulder with his peers.

Zevryn maintained his stoic, impassive mask, weighing the tactical advantage of having a secured perimeter, a front for his operations, and a loyal network of elite scions under his thumb.

"Very well," Zevryn conceded, playing the reluctant expert. "I will send a message through Master Aldous when the arrangements are finalized. But understand this, when I am away on high-risk mercenary contracts, classes cannot halt. I will need to find a qualified sub-teacher to maintain discipline in my absence."

"An adventurer of your caliber must take contracts, of course! We completely respect that," Aldous agreed warmly, entirely charmed by the proposal as the boys beamed with excited anticipation.

The deal was struck, the foundations of the academy laid, and Zevryn quietly calculated his next move in the heart of Port Vandermir.
