The morning sun cast long, sharp shadows across the bustling cobblestone streets of the surface city as Zevryn reined in his black steed. His first stop was familiar territory: Curnow’s Masterwork Armory.

Stepping through the heavy oak doors, the heat of the forge washed over him, accompanied by the rhythmic, deafening ring of a hammer striking anvil. Master Curnow looked up, wiping soot from his brow, his eyes widening as Zevryn casually stepped forward and emptied the contents of his bronze spatial ring onto the heavy wooden counter.

A massive heap of weathered, ancient weaponry, fractured broadswords, high-density iron spearheads, and solid steel crossguards salvaged from the coastal crypt, clattered across the wood.

Curnow’s jaw dropped. He stared at the battered armaments, then up at Zevryn’s impassive face. "By the gods, boy... did you sack an entire legion's armory out there? What in the hells did you run into?"

"An old lich crypt lair," Zevryn replied smoothly, his tone entirely unbothered.

Curnow instinctively pulled his hands back, eyeing the metal with sudden suspicion. "Lich-haunted? Are these rusted relics rotting with necrotic curse-work? I can't throw tainted iron into my crucibles, it'll ruin the entire batch!"

Zevryn let out a low, amused chuckle. "Relax. They're clean. No necro-energy left in those weapons; I made sure of that before I swept them up."

Curnow leaned in, cautiously inspecting a heavy steel crossguard, running a calloused thumb over the cool metal. He breathed a sigh of relief as he felt no toxic chill or corruption. "Clean as a whistle... I'll be damned. You've got an eye for salvage, Zevryn."

After a brief negotiation, the veteran smith handed over a heavy pouch of silver coin equivalent to the high-grade salvage value. Zevryn pocketed the weight, nodded to the smith, and headed back out into the street.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

His next destination was the local Adventurer's Guild.

The main hall was relatively quiet as Zevryn approached the reception desk. Without a word, he unlatched a small leather pouch from his belt and dropped it onto the counter with a soft, shifting thud. It was filled with fine, grey-white powder.

The guild clerk peered over his spectacles, raising an eyebrow. "Contract completion? Where is the lich, bounty hunter?"

Zevryn pointed a gloved finger straight at the pouch. "In the sand."

The clerk frowned, untied the leather string, and pinched a small amount of the grey dust between his fingers. He closed his eyes, sensing the faint, lingering electrostatic resonance of shattered arcane magic. Looking thoroughly startled, he muttered under his breath, scooped up the pouch, and hurried toward the back verification chambers.

A few minutes later, the clerk returned, looking at Zevryn with a mixture of professional respect and deep annoyance. He slapped the guild payout onto the desk and sighed heavily.

"The magical signature matches the crypt's anomaly. Bounty verified and paid. But next time... bring back the head or a hand, would you? The evaluators hate having to sift through ashes."

"Noted," Zevryn said flatly, grabbing his coin and turning on his heel.

On his way back toward his residential quarters, Zevryn detoured past the local inn, stepping into the dim, amber-lit taproom. Spotting the tavern keeper wiping down a wooden table, Zevryn dropped a silver coin onto the counter and slid the encrypted dark elf ledger across the grain.

"I need you to look this over," Zevryn said quietly. "The city names are legible, but the rest is heavily coded. Can you help me decipher the underlying syntax?"

The tavern keeper eyed the dark leather binding, swallowed hard, and carefully tucked the ledger under his apron. "Give me until tomorrow night. I know a few scholars who specialize in deep-dialect ciphers."

Satisfied, Zevryn finally made his way home.

When he unlocked the door to his safehouse, the lingering chill of the coastal ride melted away instantly. Reniah had already anticipated his return, having prepared a deep, steaming wooden tub filled with fragrant hot water and soothing herbal oils.

Zevryn unlatched his travel harness, set aside his black mithril sabers, and let out a long, slow breath as he stepped into the warmth.

Ahhh... home.
