The twenty skeleton soldiers advanced in terrifying unison, their rusted blades and bone spears scraping against the damp flagstones as they closed the distance.

Zevryn did not flinch. Stepping into his fluid, lethal rhythm, he engaged the vanguard. His dual black mithril sabers became a blurred web of dark steel, parrying a thrust and spinning inward to cleave through bone. In a matter of heartbeats, five of the skeleton soldiers lay shattered into lifeless fragments across the floor.

But as the fifth skull cracked under his heel, a sharp, discordant screech echoed from the altar.

The mid-level lich’s eye sockets flared with an intense, blinding emerald glare. It slammed its staff into the ground once more, and the crypt floor shuddered violently. Before Zevryn could press his advantage, a fresh surge of dark necromantic energy ripped through the stone, clawing another wave of skeletal warriors up from the earth to reinforce the ranks.

Zevryn’s pale eyes narrowed sharply. A cold spike of caution hit him, as he realized this was no weak, isolated remnant. This was a true mid-level lich, capable of sustaining an attrition-style undead horde that could trap and exhaust even a seasoned mercenary over time. Against conventional elemental magic like natural ice, a mid-level lich could easily nullify or melt it with its necrotic aura.

I need absolute suppression, not elemental cold, Zevryn realized instantly.

Deciding to cut short any prolonged engagement that could drain his stamina, Zevryn reached into his bronze spatial storage ring and drew forth a rare, high-grade consumable: a bronze-tier stasis-card talisman, imbued with absolute inertia and mana-freezing void essence.

Unlike simple frost, this talisman targeted the very flow of kinetic energy and arcane mana, locking all movement in a localized field of absolute stasis that a lich's necro-fire could not simply burn away.

Channeling a surge of mana into the rune-etched card, Zevryn slammed it directly against the flagstones in the center of the hall.

BOOM.

A blinding flash of shimmering, silver-grey void light engulfed the subterranean chamber. In an instant, an invisible wave of absolute stasis radiated outward, sweeping across the entire horde. The twenty-plus skeleton soldiers and the mid-level lich froze dead in their tracks, not encased in ice, but caught in a temporal-mana lock that paralyzed every atom of their movement and extinguished the erratic pulsing of their dark energy.

Moving with terrifying, phantom speed while the stasis field held, Zevryn dashed forward.

His dual sabers humming with dark energy, he tore through the paralyzed ranks of skeleton soldiers. Clang, shatter, crack. His precise strikes turned the locked bones into harmless, glittering dust.

Leaving the shattered remnants behind, he closed in on the center dais where the lich hung suspended in the mana-stasis field. The creature's emerald eye sockets flickered frantically behind the barrier, its jaw locked in a silent, paralyzed shriek.

Zevryn raised his primary black mithril saber high, channeling every ounce of his momentum into a devastating overhead strike.

With a deafening crunch, the blade pierced straight through the stasis field, cleaving the lich's glowing core and shattering its crude, fractured phylactery into absolute nothingness.

The silver-grey stasis field instantly dissipated into a harmless shimmer. As the residual arcane vapor cleared from the central dais, something small and metallic caught the dim light. With a faint clink, a dark iron ring etched with strange combat resonance runes rolled across the stone, dropped from the lich's dissolving remains.

Zevryn stepped forward, picking up the artifact. It pulsed with a dense, concentrated hum of combat-arcane power. This was a rare skill-enhancement ring, an artifact capable of channeling kinetic resonance directly into a wielder's weaponry, granting his black mithril sabers an innate surge of razor-sharp piercing momentum and speed. Slipping the dark iron band onto his finger, he felt a sudden, sharp alignment hum through his grip, perfectly complementing his dual-wielding style.

Before leaving the central vault, Zevryn swept a critical eye over the surrounding alcoves and shattered weapon racks. Knowing the steep material costs of high-end forging, he methodically salvaged a cache of old, weathered armaments left behind by unfortunate predecessors, including fractured broadswords, high-density iron spear-heads, and solid steel crossguards. With a subtle spatial hum, he swept the entire haul into his bronze storage ring. Master Curnow would pay handsomely for high-grade salvage metal to toss into his melting crucibles.

Securing the remaining spoils, he watched the frozen skeletons collapse into heaps of inert dust. The oppressive weight of the lich's aura vanished from the catacombs entirely.

The contract was fulfilled, the threat eliminated, and both a powerful new enhancement and a profitable salvage haul added to his inventory. He sheathed his sabers, turned on his heel, and made his way back toward the surface and his waiting steed.
