The dim candlelight flickered across the scarred wood of the Salty Kraken’s back booth as the innkeeper leaned in closer, his single eye locking onto Zevryn with a calculating gleam.

"Here is my proposal," the innkeeper said quietly, resting his weathered hands on the table. "You need eyes and ears across Vandermir to preempt Xalthar’s moves. I can provide free, unfiltered intelligence on any faction trying to look into your safehouse, along with active counterintelligence to weed out enemy spies before they ever reach your doorstep. If you are ever too busy or occupied with high-level mercenary contracts to handle the daily training yourself, my fee for managing the curriculum drops significantly."

Zevryn remained silent, listening intently as the innkeeper laid out his true objective.

"In exchange," the innkeeper continued, "I want you to take on a group of afternoon students. Five orphans, ages fourteen to sixteen, with the raw grit to survive the underworld. I want you to train them in the assassin arts, teach them how to move in the dark, how to strike unseen, and how to stay alive."

It was a mutually beneficial arrangement. Zevryn gained a network of young, fiercely loyal assets and absolute counter-espionage protection, while the underworld gained a master instructor capable of forging raw street kids into lethal instruments.

Zevryn tapped his finger lightly against the dark iron ring on his hand, feeling Vax’s silent, watchful presence stir in the back of his mind.

"I accept," Zevryn said evenly. "But I have a condition of my own. I want to train Reniah as well. She is your niece, isn't she?"

The innkeeper froze. For a fraction of a second, the hardened mask of the underworld broker cracked, surprise flashing across his weathered features before he slowly nodded. "Yes. She is."

"She won't be my servant anymore," Zevryn stated with cold, unyielding authority. "She is my formal pupil. Let the new butler, Xel, handle the domestic duties Reniah used to manage."

The innkeeper blinked, processing the shift in the girl's standing.

"Xel is fully capable of managing the safehouse," he murmured. "Though, I assume you figured out his background the moment he stepped through your door."

Zevryn's pale eyes narrowed slightly. "Is he an assassin?"

"A retired one," the innkeeper replied, a faint, wry smile touching his scarred lips. "A veteran operative from a high-tier guild who decided he preferred a quieter sort of shadows."

Zevryn’s expression didn't change, but a sharp, calculating gleam entered his gaze. "Good. I may have to teach the old dog some new tricks. I want him to act as the sub-teacher for the academy whenever I am away on missions."

The innkeeper stared at the drow for a long moment, realization dawning as he saw the sheer scale of Zevryn’s long-term design. He wasn't just building an academy; he was constructing an impenetrable, self-sustaining ecosystem of loyal operatives, elite merchant scions, and hidden underworld muscle right under the nose of Port Vandermir's councils.

Slowly, the innkeeper extended a calloused hand across the table.

"Deal," the innkeeper rasped.

Zevryn reached out, his grip firm and cold, sealing the pact in the smoky heart of the Salty Kraken.
