Chapter 321 – Chaos Rising

"I take it I'm not getting an answer?" John said while staring down at the chronodragon under his arm, wondering if she had messed with Sei's body after she died.

"Mmm... No, it was me." Aqua replied, taking the spoon of pudding out of her mouth. "I didn't tell you, or anyone, as I wasn't sure if it would work, but I put her body in stasis with the boon I received in that world, in hopes of reviving her if I managed to gain more power later. It's only a slim chance, so I didn't tell anyone so I didn't get their hopes up. I would need to use a good chunk of my old divinity to bring her back at this point, but with DEN, anything is possible." She looked a bit embarrassed about doing it for some reason.

"Really?" He said. He was slightly conflicted about her leaving him out of the loop, but he didn't fault her. He'd 'stopped' time twice now with DEN, hoping to do the same; this was no different. "Thank you, darling. Let's hope we can make that happen. Speaking of... Alec, how in the heck can I build up my mana to the levels that I need to use that spell? 500 mana is a crazy amount in most of these worlds other than Warcraft."

"Well, you can continue to train, and slowly, over a long time, your maximum mana will build up naturally. Or, you can go to some of your worlds with a system and level up. As you level up, your mana will increase. You won't get to keep all of it when you return, just a percentage, but that would also build up your base amount. Also, when you activate your 'Rage' mode and turn into an ogre, your mana will increase. Other than that, just through spending gatcha tokens here or burning your divinity."

"Burning my divinity?"

"Yes. You do have a budding church in your name now, or did you forget? Prayers from your followers will fuel your divinity, letting you use it instead of mana. It's not a one-for-one exchange, divinity being far more powerful than arcane mana, but it's more fickle. The cost of using divinity will depend on your aspect and alignment. For example, if you wanted to heal someone, your divinity will give you more bang for your buck than if you wanted to cast, say, an earth wall or teleport spell."

"My aspect and alignment? What does that even mean, Alec?"

"John, you're a Paladin, but not a goodie-two-shoes one. I would say your alignment is Lawful Neutral; willing to do acts that can be considered both good and evil. And before you ask, yes, you do evil shit, and you can't deny it. Shooting pirates' limbs before executing them, impaling goblins in flaming spears of power and healing them to prolong their suffering. A good person doesn't do these things. Your word is your law, and you follow it, but you walk along the edge of becoming pure evil when your temper flares. If this were D&D, I would call you an Oath of Vengeance Paladin, but you won't get that reference."

"Fine. Yeah, I can go a little overboard sometimes. So... that is my alignment; what is my aspect?"

"The Father."

"What?"

"Or The Grandfather, take your choice. You don't seek to use your powers; you seem almost naturally immune to those temptations. Instead, you have focused on finding loving people in each of these worlds you travelled to, looking to build relationships with them, with the intention of marrying them and starting a family. You restrain yourself at all times, unleashing your actual powers only when the people you care for are in danger, or when you're driven to it by a challenge.

Hah, take Rumi for example. You could have kicked her ass pretty quickly if you used your powers, but instead you challenged yourself to fight on her level. She had to force the issue for you to fight her with your powers, and then you dropped her fairly quickly. She might be a weak superhero in the grand scheme of things, but she is still so far beyond a normal human that you wouldn't have stood a chance for years if you did it normally, if ever."

"Well, my wife told me to find love again... I might have taken that a few steps too far, but I have no regrets. But what does that mean by aspect? Just... who I am? Is it that simple?"

"Yeah. It's who you are. You're a father, a grandfather, a family man. Stay true to who you are, and your divinity will respond to your needs in that regard at greater efficiency than doing something that is contrary to those needs."

He wasn't sure he completely understood, but it seemed like an abstract concept, kind of like funnelling the anger of his sword to increase the power of everything he did. Anger was the abstract there; being a father was the abstract here; he just had to learn to funnel that energy.

Mana, Ki, Divinity. I've been flailing around with two of these, and now I have a third one in the mix. I need to find instructors to teach me how to use these things properly. Returner would have been a great resource for mana and magic. Supposedly there are Ki users in DxD, and gods too, for that matter. I will ask Aqua more about it at a later date, but she runs almost everything on instinct, so I don't know if she would be the best instructor. Maybe Eris would be a good teacher. If I defeat their Devil King in that world, she might have time to teach me what she knows. 

Shaking his head, he put those thoughts aside for now. He just needed to get through this visit to DEN, go out with Xiaolin and Aqua to a restaurant, and then head back to her castle to relax for a couple of days. 

"Do you have any other questions, or shall we move on?" Alec asked, swirling his drink around. 

"I do, but let's put a pin in it for another day." He said, then focused on the screen between them. "Continue."

"Oh thank god, those are combined. I was worried this list was going to be as long as my arm after that world." John said, glancing over the list. 

Holy crap! Those stats are insane! Mixing my mana cycling and Ki along with those numbers, and I might be able to take Rumi on without spells.

"Yeah, I took some liberties, combined a few things, but you can still access the master list from your menu if you want to go over them."

"Thanks. Now... what is this number next to the divinity?"

"Your followers. You can use that as a gauge about how much power you can pull to fuel your spells. For example, right now, for your holy magic, that would be about 400 mana, while for a fireball, it would be about 80 mana, unless you used it in response to your aspect or alignment. It is all a matter of your perspective. It doesn't automatically regenerate, as it requires your followers' prayers to power it, and right now they are all stuck in that model in your pocket."

"Wait, you're saying I could pop over to IF right now, burn this and my mana up and could cast resurrection?"

"No. You're out of mana there right now, remember. You burned it all up trying to heal Ash. You could go to DxD and resurrect Issei, as you had most of your mana then; the camera had only pulled about a quarter of your reserves from blocking that attack and holding that spear. You wouldn't have access to any more divinity until you either gain more followers or return those you do have to a world and stay there a day or two while their prayers refill your reservoir. As I said, it's powerful, but fickle."

"Hmm... well, that still gives me more options going forward. Thanks. So, these massive stat boosts?"

"Because you were changed into a High Human, a demigod. Did you think Destiny was joking when she said she was changing you? She accepted you into her and Fate's pantheon; she wouldn't leave you as a mere human who was just strong for a human. You are literally more powerful than any normal human now, and with those rewards from your last quest, you are well within the realm of a demigod in terms of power. Your reflexes alone are off the charts right now."

"I noticed. Why is there an x4 next to my intelligence stat?"

"Your parallel minds. With that implant, you pretty much have four brains now. Just focus on it to activate it, and voila, you can have a conversation, write a book, read a book, and plan dinner at the exact same time. It will draw on your stamina over long periods, but with your current stats, you could probably go for a few days before you exhausted yourself mentally."

"You're right, that sounds exhausting."

"It can take some time to get used to it, but if you're planning something complicated, or in a chaotic fight, having multiple lines of thought going can be an amazing advantage. Feral Instinct and Accelerated Reflexes are stacked as well, letting you respond faster than a normal person would have any right to."

"John... why do you have all my Holy Magic? I never taught you that." Aqua asked.

"Oh... well... ahh..." He said, trying to come up with a reasonable reason as to why he had it, but instead just bit the bullet. "I received it as a quest reward when we made love... these DEN guys give me quests to complete, though I don't really pay much attention to them; heck, it took nearly a year and six worlds to finish this last one." 

"Wha? What was the quest? Wait, why don't I have any quests? I like getting rewards!" She said, turning to Alec before he could say it was about claiming her virginity. 

"Do you want a quest? I assure you, we can come up with some fairly interesting ones for you." Alec said, his grin growing. "How about being split roast in three different worlds? Don't glare at me like that, John; I was joking. How about public sex in three worlds? That seems more up your alley, and you could probably convince that lug there to go along with it."

"Umm... I don't know... maybe..." She replied, mulling it over. John just shook his head. If it happened, it happened, but he wasn't going to force that sort of situation.

"Speaking of quests, what is up with this one you gave me? Other than Tanya and Chris, I can't see this happening."

"No? What about those two cooks, Alma and Felicia? Or maybe if you have an orgy with all the women and the ogres in your sex den mansion? There are mothers and daughters there, even if they are not sure who their parents are. Not to mention in a few years Mei and Yu, or Lucy and... don't look at me like that, mother-daughter threesomes are normal fantasies!"

"There is something seriously wrong with you, Alec. Seriously. Wrong." John said, shaking his head at the host sitting across from them.

I mean... Mei is old enough now that she wouldn't consider me her father... but... no... just no.

{I can tell you're considering it! Shall I show you an image of her when she is 23, from MHA Vigilantes? She is quite the looker in a nerdy engineer sort of way.}

Damn it, get out of my head, man! 

"Hey! I just noticed, my absorption skill is missing." John said, trying to change the subject before Little John tried to take control again. It didn't help that both Aqua and Pande were rubbing his thighs while reading his stat page.

"Yeah, you don't get to keep that; it's too powerful. It was only for Re: Monster. If you decided to eat dungeon bosses in The Great Cleric, powerful creatures in Warcraft, or the Zerg or Javarians in StarCraft and Infinite Frontiers, you'd gain an incredible amount of power quickly. And let's not even think about what would happen if you consumed someone in DxD within the devils or angels, or one of the other pantheons."

"Like I am going to eat a person, Alec."

"No, but you could eat a holy sword, or demonic armour, and gain all those skills. That absorption skill is so broken; I'm just glad you didn't use it to its fullest extent. If you ate most of Velvet's Treasury, you'd steamroll most of your remaining worlds. As it stands, you could already do that in most of them."

"Seriously? That's crazy. I know I'm strong, but other than High School of the Dead, I can't imagine I could just steamroll any of those worlds. How will being strong help me in DxD as the principal of a high school? Or help me when I'm flying a ship? Well, other than reflexes, anyway."

"You might be surprised. Well, enough of this, where would you like to allocate your points?"

He thought about it for a moment. "Can I have a single gatcha roll for stat points first? I want to up my mana again."

A large die barreled toward them from the side of the stage, moving so fast he barely had time to register it before his hand shot out to catch it and keep it from cracking Aqua's head. She let out a quick yelp, not even realizing the object was incoming until he caught it. 

Damn, I guess I do have lightning reflexes now. 

"Really, Alec?" John said, then tossed the die on the table in front of him. It bounced around a few times, then landed on 14. 

"What? I knew you could catch it."

"Right. Up my mana again, please, and toss the rest into intelligence."

"Nice," John said, closing his eyes, focusing his mind inward, and activating his parallel mind.  

His mind expanded, then split. 

WHOA! What in the world!

He felt three other consciousnesses in his mind, but at the same time, they were all him. He looked around the stage, his minds all latching onto something different. One focused on Aqua, how she hadn't stopped rubbing his thigh while he and Alec talked. She wore the blue dress Xiaolin had fitted her in the last time they were here. A small amount of cleavage showed through the diamond cut-out at the front of her dress, making her even more alluring to him than Pande, who wore a corset that barely covered anything. 

Yeah, I really prefer the more modest dresses. Subtlety is sexier than flaunting everything.

Another mind focused on Pande, the dragon lady happily slurping a slushie she pulled from her pocket dimension, her head bobbing to a tune only she could hear. She was definitely a beautiful woman, but he wondered what in the heck she and Aqua had talked about behind his back.

Did Aqua do the same thing Nanaella did and add someone to my 'harem' without talking to me? I hope not... though Pande does seem determined about joining it. I'll have to try talking with them at some point to get to the bottom of this.

Another mind started to process everything that had happened to him with Xiaolin since he met the Tigerwoman. She was another unearthly beauty, one that felt both familiar and alien to him. His focus shifted to the curtain where she was recording this, the job very odd for a divine being like her to be doing, but at the same time she seemed to love doing it. 

But why is she familiar? 

His last mind focused on his skills, looking them over again and controlling his hands. 

This all makes sense, but am I missing anything? Oh! The goblin rapist skills are not there! Or the orc libido! Whew... thank you, Alec. 

{You're welcome. As much as I like watching sex, seeing you struggle with your 'Little John' fighting for dominance with you was getting old, mainly since you didn't drop into complete debauchery. Now, if you're done playing around with parallel minds, shall we get on with the gatcha?}

"Sorry, I was just lost in my thoughts," John said, though he left his other minds to start working on other things. It was weird, but he thought he would get used to it with practice. 

"I'm sure you were. Now, this is the last time you will have access to the old gatcha. Once you leave DEN, we will reset it and focus it more on how you have developed so far, tailoring it more towards the worlds you have access to."

"Interesting. Well, give me mid-tier housing, high-tier clothing, and... screw it, let's see what is in that special tier equipment."

"Really? I just told you that things were going to change and you would be getting a new gatcha and you're burning that many points?"

"Yeah. I need new clothes, since I lost the last ones in a fire. I've wanted a smaller house I can use in the worlds I'm travelling around in. It won't matter in most of them, but it can't hurt to have. As for the equipment, well, you said things would be more expensive, so I figured now would be a good time to see what I can get." 

"Alright. Did you want your five Eroge rolls as well?"

"No. I don't think I'll be needing those." He replied with a laugh. 

"Your loss. Now, spin that wheel!"

Lights flashed, and music played as always. The noise, which he always found annoying, was oddly comforting now. 

"Hey, where were your stats?" He asked Aqua as the gatcha spun.

"We did them while you were being... detained by the bureaucracy."

"Ah. How did you do?"

"Good. I dumped all my stats into my intelligence. It's odd, my memory is still full of holes, but what I do remember, I remember clearly now."

"That's great! Do you remember your mother? Or do you want me to go over what you told me about her?"

"That would be good. Thank you for remembering."

"You're welcome."

"Congratulations, you have acquired the mid-tier housing '742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield'. Relax before your next shift at the reactor with your complimentary case of Duff beer and pet the house cat named Snowball V."

"What is...wait! Is that the Simpsons' house?" John said, remembering that show from the 90s.

"Not just the 90s, John. It's still being made today."

"Crazy. Well, it will be better than trying to put a miniature castle down every night." He said. He actually wanted a trailer, but this would have to do. 

Can I fit a two-story home into a dungeon?

"Congratulations, you have acquired the High-Tier clothing, Threads of Destiny. Don't let this well-cut suit fool you; it's loaded with goodies from MI6 from the 47th Bond film, giving you the goods to become England's top spy. For King and Country, 007."

An unfamiliar black suit materialized on his body, along with a white shirt and black tie. He stood up and tried to get a better look at it.  "Well, this is unexpected. Wait, did Elvis just say the 47th film? I thought there were only about twenty of those."

"From your time on Earth, 27, but this is DEN. I believe this movie came out in 2104. I think you will enjoy what the 'Q Division' has put into that suit." Alec said with a smile. "Try the chameleon function."

"The what?"

"Press your thumb on the bottom button and twist it a half turn to the left."

"Like this?" He replied, then the suit changed, and he was suddenly wearing the exact same white suit Alec was wearing. "What in the heck?"

"Neat, right?"

"My domicus, can I trade you for that suit?!? I will give you two... no, three pancakes and a donkey." Pande said, pulling a plate of pancakes from her pocket dimension, then a rather startled-looking donkey. It brayed a loud Hee-Haw, then started running around the stage. 

"No. And put that away! Where... why do you have living animals in your pocket dimension???" John said, shaking his head while the animal ran around the stage. It bounced off an invisible shield near the doors, then ran off behind the curtains. He winced when he heard someone yelp, then the clatter of dishes hitting the floor back in the break area. 

"For your villa. Headwife said you demanded farm animals and seeds, so I was gating around everywhere, gathering more as tribute to you. Was that incorrect? Headwife?" Pande replied, seemingly unfazed by the chaos that was ensuing because of the donkey.

"I'm not his headwife! And I said I would talk to him about it! I didn't guarantee anything! You didn't steal those animals, did you?"

"No, you told me no more stealing, so I traded. I left magic potions and minty cookies for payment; at least I think they were magic. Minty cookies are like magic. Want some?" She said, pulling out another box of Thin Mints. 

John sighed, took a cookie, and patted Pande on the head. "At least you didn't outright steal things, but make sure you actually talk to the owners first next time." She hummed happily at his touch, rubbing her head against his hand almost like a content cat. 

Is she purring? I thought she was a dragon?

"You... look good, John," Aqua said, looking up at him from the loveseat. For some reason, she looked nervous, her shoulders slumped forward as she wrung her hands.

"Thanks. So do you." He said, then, on a whim, rubbed her head too. She melted into his hand and hummed happily like Pande.

What in the hell... a dragon and a goddess are acting like cats? Whatever. 

"Pande, if you would please go retrieve your donkey, we can get on with this," Alec said. He looked amused, but that was his normal look.

"Yes, sir." She said, then rushed off to the back of the stage. Some more crashes and a loud roar echoed across the stage. 

"Sir? That is an odd amount of respect she shows you." John said, retaking his seat.

"We had time to talk during your few days down at the border offices. Despite their haughty nature, like most monsters, Dragons respect power. When she realized she couldn't use her normal powers against me, she calmed down significantly. So, you're welcome; I trained your dragon for you. Here." He said, tossing him a small grey-and-black key fob with a single button.

"I never asked for a dragon. What is this?"

"If she gets unruly, just press the button. It will lock down her powers."

"I don't want this, Alec; I just want to get her back to Infinite Frontiers."

"Why do you want to take her there?"

"That's where her home is, isn't it?"

"No. That is just where her father is right now. She is actually from another one of your worlds. At least the universe that world is in."

"You have to be kidding me, I thought I had that one figured out."

"I'm sure you will get it in time."

"Do I have to bring her with me when I go back through a door, or can we leave her here?"

"Actually, she will be staying with a few of her distant cousins for a bit, so you can leave her in DEN for a month or two, but she will be following you at some point. Probably whenever she gets bored."

"Great... wait? Distant cousins? Can't they just- No, of course not; she is part of my show now, right?"

"Exactly. Just don't lose that fob, and you will be fine."

"What does it... do?"

"Locks her in a single time. That is why your sister couldn't stop her with New Order; she can shrug off any effects from attacks that aren't time-based. Press that button, and she will be unable to use any of her time magic or transform into a dragon. For a chronodragon, it’s a bit terrifying, but it will let you de-escalate any chaos she causes fairly quickly. You might not even have to use it, just threaten her with it. Press it again to release the effects. Simple, right?"

"I really don't like this... this reminds me of the slave chips they stuffed into IDS of Infinite Frontiers."

"It's just a precaution. No one says you need to use it. She is actually a good woman, just chaotic. Reminds me of my younger days, actually." Alec replied, taking a drink of his Westria. 

"I have a hard time picturing you as a good woman." John deadpanned. 

"Why? Little makeup and a wig and he would probably make a cute ladyboy." Aqua said.

*Pffft* 

Alec spit out his drink, apparently not expecting Aqua's little quip. John chuckled, wrapped his arm around her shoulder, and pulled her tight to his side. 

Maybe having another voice at these things isn't so bad. Anyone who can catch Alec off guard is great in my books.

"Congratulations, you have acquired the Special-Tier equipment, Sonic Screwdriver. Broken toaster? No problem. Cracked warp core. Easy peasy. Relationship problems. Not so much. If it is mechanical in nature, don't worry, this is the right tool for the job! Doctor Approved!"

"Ahh... what?" John said as an eight-inch-long piece of metal materialized in his hand. It looked like a long sword hilt, with a crystal at the tip and a single button where his thumb would rest.

"Oh, that is a cool item. Doctor Who uses it to fix everything. One tool for every job." Alec said, snapping his fingers and cleaning up his spittle. "It becomes whatever tool the user needs to fix something. Not to mention, it can make the materials it needs to conduct the repairs, too. At least on the small scale; if you blow up half your ship, it won't just make new hull plating, but other than that, it will make fixing almost anything easy."

"Oh really? That is pretty handy." John said, giving the tool one last glance before stuffing it into one of the dozens of pockets inside his suit jacket. Somehow, it didn't even make a bulge in the fabric, leaving the suit's outside lines clean.

"It is. Well, with that out of the way, I believe you have plans. Did you have any further questions on that world, or anything else?" Alec asked.

*CRASH*

*HEEE-HAW! HEEE-HAW!*

"GET BACK IN THE HOLE, YOU OBTUSE BEAST!"

"No, Alec. I think I'm okay for now. You... good with that?"

"Of course! It's amusing to watch her struggle with a suddenly magical donkey. Go enjoy your break; we will be plenty entertained here."

"Come on, honey! I want to go relax in the bath for a bit before we head out!" Xiaolin said, stepping out from behind the curtain with a wide smile. She was wearing some pseudo-tan combat fatigues for some reason, like she was out in the desert or on some African safari. 

"What in the Omni are you wearing?" He asked, standing up and offering Aqua a hand.

"What? It's comfortable when I am following you around. Don't worry, I picked out some nice dresses for tonight, so we ladies need to go get ready. I had a suit for you too, but I think you already have it covered with that one." She said, handing him his sword and other items. "Here, tuck these away inside of it. It's not quite like a normal pocket dimension or bag of holding, but you can stuff things in the pockets that wouldn't normally fit. Isn't technology great!"

"Really? I think I want to see the bond film this thing is in." He said, stuffing his gear and other things in the pockets. Even the sword slid in without issue, its hilt the only thing sticking out so he could grasp it with little difficulty. When he buttoned the bottom of the jacket again, the fabric hugged him without showing any outline of the items. "Yes. John isn't the only one who can read your thoughts, my naughty little goddess. Unlike him, I'm not worried about your privacy. Now, what was that you were thinking about the other night? About me in particular?" She said, taking Aqua's hand and pulling her away from him. 

Before either of them could say anything, the world warped and they were teleported away from DEN.

Alec sat there in his chair, watching the afterimage of his departing DEN contestants dissipate, swirling his drink around again before slamming it back. 

"Leaving me with a Chronodragon to take care of, really? Director, you really have an odd sense of humour, you know that?" He said, then stood up without receiving a reply.
