Chapter 750: Chapter 750: Public Apology (4)
After the assembly ended, Susan Caldwell’s name spread far and wide throughout the school. Since she had previously given a speech on stage as the new student representative, quite a few people already knew who she was.
But the military training wasn’t even over, and she had already gone from being the outstanding new student representative to a cautionary tale. The contrast was staggering.
She had deliberately built a good reputation for herself before, but now that very fame had backfired, turning her into the school’s biggest laughingstock.
Vera Xavier was a stark contrast to Susan Caldwell. In a way, the assembly had been held for her. Thanks to Susan Caldwell’s malicious smear campaign, her reputation had been in the gutter, but now, it had undergone a complete reversal. In the students’ minds, she was now the epitome of someone who endured humiliation to save others, a person of great kindness and noble character.
So, when the assembly ended, many students came over to thank Vera Xavier. Most of them were the same girls who had laid hands on Susan Caldwell earlier.
Only after attacking Susan Caldwell did the girls remember her powerful family background, and a wave of fear washed over them. They worried they would be expelled or severely punished. However, the dean of students had just announced on stage that all they needed to do was write a self-criticism letter.
They all knew this punishment was incredibly light.
Vera Xavier smiled. "You’re all too kind. I know everyone here has a good heart. What’s past is past."
"Vera, you’re so magnanimous," a girl said indignantly. "If I were the one who had been slandered like that, there’s no way I’d let her off so easily!"
Vera Xavier just smiled without saying more. She knew perfectly well that Susan Caldwell had made an enemy of every single one of these girls.
The one person who breathed a sigh of relief was Laura White. She had previously thought that apologizing to Vera Xavier in front of the entire school was incredibly humiliating. But with Susan Caldwell serving as an even more villainous example, it seemed what she had done was nothing in comparison.
Laura White watched Vera Xavier smiling amidst the crowd and lightly ground her teeth. ’She’s a smart one,’ Laura thought. ’Of course I can see that Vera is very methodical. She knows exactly what to do and when to do it for the best effect; it’s all crystal clear to her.’
Laura White felt a pang of regret. ’I’ve made an enemy of someone as formidable as Vera Xavier. My life from now on probably won’t be easy.’
She stood there, a dejected look on her face.
The assembly was over, but the military training was not. Everyone had to fall back in for training!
Before falling back into formation, Vera Xavier saw Ruby Walsh watching them with an envious expression. She walked over to her side. "Once you’re all better," she said, "you’ll be able to run and jump around just like us."
After Ruby Walsh was rushed to the hospital for her medical episode, Vera Xavier had found the time to visit her. Owing Vera the great debt of saving her life, Ruby Walsh had immediately agreed when Vera asked if she would help clarify the events of that day at school after being discharged.
Vera Xavier also knew that Ruby Walsh’s short hair wasn’t a style choice. She’d had head surgery, and they had shaved it all off. It was only just now beginning to grow back. Because her hair was short, her chest was flat, and she wore androgynous clothes, she was often mistaken for a boy.
Ruby Walsh heaved a long sigh. "The doctor said my heart condition is pretty serious. There’s no cure for it in the country right now. All I can do is manage it carefully. I’ll probably never be like all of you."
