The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife
Chapter 53: The Wrong Container
"MOVE!"
Theo’s voice ripped through the cargo hold like a gunshot.
Lucian reacted instantly.
One arm locked around Allison’s waist while he threw both of them backward out of the container.
The world detonated.
The explosion slammed through the ship hard enough to shake steel walls and crack lights overhead. Heat burst through the narrow corridor in a violent wave while metal screamed around them.
Allison hit the ground hard beneath Lucian’s body shielding hers completely.
The blast roared through the cargo hold.
Then—
Darkness.
Smoke.
Ringing ears.
For one terrifying second, Allison couldn’t hear anything except the high-pitched whine filling her skull.
Lucian’s hand gripped the back of her head tightly.
Protective.
Instinctive.
"Allison."
His voice sounded distant.
Muffled.
Then sharper.
"Allison."
She blinked hard.
"I’m okay."
The second the words left her mouth, Lucian exhaled.
Not dramatic.
Not obvious.
But enough for her to feel it.
Theo coughed somewhere nearby.
"Well," he rasped, "that was deeply disrespectful."
A piece of burning debris clattered nearby.
Anthony screamed from farther down the corridor.
"I HATE ALL OF YOU!"
Simone’s voice echoed faintly over comms.
"ARE WE ALIVE?"
Elias answered immediately.
"Unfortunately, yes."
"Okay good because I just realized I left my purse in the SUV."
Lucian pushed himself up slowly, checking Allison over immediately.
"You’re bleeding."
Allison touched her forehead.
"...That’s because I keep headbutting people."
"That isn’t reassuring."
"It’s becoming a personality trait."
Despite everything—
Despite the explosion, the smoke, the danger—
Lucian almost smiled.
Then Theo staggered out of the smoke holding his shoulder.
"You good?" Allison asked.
Theo looked offended.
"No. Someone exploded me."
Fair.
Very fair.
Adrian’s voice crackled through comms.
"Report."
Lucian looked back toward the ruined container.
"Bomb inside B-12."
"Casualties?"
Theo glanced around.
"Minimal. Whoever rigged it wanted distraction, not ship destruction."
Lucian’s eyes narrowed immediately.
"He’s moving her."
Exactly.
The realization hit all of them at once.
Dorian never intended for Clara to stay in one place long enough to rescue cleanly.
This was a maze.
A delay tactic.
A psychological game.
And they were losing time.
Lucian turned sharply toward Elias.
"Track the signal again."
Elias’s typing echoed through comms.
Then silence.
Too much silence.
Lucian’s voice lowered dangerously.
"Elias."
"I lost it."
Everyone froze.
Theo straightened slowly.
"What."
"The signal disappeared after the explosion." Elias cursed under his breath. "Either the tracker was fake too or he’s scrambling frequencies again."
Anthony looked sick.
"He’s playing with us."
Lucian’s expression went cold enough to freeze oceans.
"No," he said quietly. "He’s stalling."
Allison felt it immediately.
The shift.
Because Lucian was right.
This wasn’t ransom behavior anymore.
This was timing.
Dorian wanted something to happen while they chased Clara.
Then the ship lights suddenly flickered red.
A loud automated voice echoed overhead.
WARNING. ENGINE DISENGAGEMENT IN PROCESS.
Theo blinked.
"...That sounds bad."
Elias answered immediately.
"It means the ship is preparing departure."
Anthony’s eyes widened.
"We’re moving?"
The deck beneath them shuddered violently.
Allison grabbed the wall for balance.
"Oh, fantastic."
Lucian’s jaw tightened.
"He’s taking the entire ship out."
Adrian’s voice came through sharp and immediate.
"Get to upper deck now."
The cargo hold alarms began blaring.
Red emergency lights spun through the corridor while smoke rolled across the ceiling.
Theo adjusted his grip on the stolen rifle.
"You know," he muttered, "this vacation sucks."
Allison snorted despite herself.
Lucian grabbed her hand immediately and pulled her forward through the corridor.
Not letting go.
Not even slightly.
Anthony stumbled behind them breathing hard.
"Wait—wait—"
Theo grabbed the back of Anthony’s jacket before he could fall.
"If you die after all this effort, I’m billing your estate."
Anthony wheezed.
"You’re a psychopath."
"Yes," Theo said calmly. "But an efficient one."
They burst back onto the main deck into chaos.
Rain crashed sideways through brutal harbor winds while cargo chains swung violently overhead.
And the ship—
The entire massive cargo ship—
Was slowly pulling away from the dock.
Allison’s stomach dropped.
"No no no—"
Adrian’s security teams were still fighting along the upper deck against Dorian’s remaining men.
Gunfire cracked through the storm.
One attacker hit the deck hard.
Another disappeared behind stacked containers.
Theo immediately joined the fight again like the violence physically energized him.
Lucian scanned the deck rapidly.
Looking for Dorian.
Looking for Clara.
Nothing.
Then—
A small sound.
Faint.
Metal banging.
Allison turned sharply toward the far end of the ship.
There.
One of the lower exterior containers.
Tiny fists hitting metal from inside.
Lucian saw it at the exact same moment.
Every muscle in his body locked instantly.
"Clara."
The little girl screamed.
"MOMMY!"
Lucian moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
Dorian stepped out from behind the crane tower above them.
Gun aimed downward.
"You take another step," he called calmly, "and she dies."
The entire deck froze.
Rain poured between them.
Lucian stopped moving.
Barely.
Dorian stood elevated above the deck in black tactical gear, coat whipping violently in the storm wind.
Calm.
Controlled.
Pale eyes fixed directly on Lucian.
The little girl inside the container cried harder.
"Please!"
Allison’s chest twisted painfully.
Because Clara sounded exhausted now.
Scared.
Small.
Dorian smiled faintly.
"See? Now we’re finally honest."
Lucian’s voice came out lethal.
"You don’t walk away from this."
Dorian tilted his head slightly.
"That depends."
Theo shifted subtly to the left.
Dorian noticed immediately.
His weapon moved slightly toward the container.
Theo stopped.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Dorian wasn’t bluffing.
Anthony suddenly whispered—
"Oh my God."
Allison looked toward him sharply.
Anthony stared at Dorian with dawning horror.
"That’s not his real objective."
Lucian didn’t look away from Dorian.
"Explain."
Anthony swallowed hard.
"He’s buying time."
Allison frowned.
"For what?"
Anthony looked genuinely terrified now.
Then quietly said—
"Martha."
Silence.
Then realization hit.
Allison’s blood ran cold.
Martha Morrison wasn’t just trying to destroy Allison anymore.
She was trying to survive.
And Dorian?
Dorian was creating chaos big enough to bury every financial trail connected to Clara’s kidnapping.
The shipping routes.
The payments.
The accounts.
By the time anyone untangled this mess—
Martha planned to disappear.
Theo’s expression darkened.
"Oh, that evil old bitch."
Anthony looked like he might throw up hearing his own mother described that way.
The ship lurched harder.
The dock slowly drifted farther away.
Lucian’s voice sharpened.
"Elias."
"On it," Elias answered immediately.
"What’s happening?"
Rapid typing echoed through comms.
Then—
"Oh no."
Nobody liked the sound of that.
Lucian’s jaw tightened.
"What."
Elias inhaled sharply.
"This ship isn’t heading out to open water."
Adrian looked up from the lower deck firefight.
"Then where."
Elias’s voice lowered.
"It’s headed toward another cargo transfer vessel already waiting outside the harbor."
Theo cursed immediately.
"Transfer."
Dorian smiled from above.
"Very good."
Allison stared up at him.
"You’re selling her."
Dorian’s pale eyes slid toward her.
"No," he corrected calmly. "I’m delivering her."
The distinction hit worse.
Lucian stepped forward one slow step.
Dorian immediately aimed toward the container again.
Clara cried out inside.
Lucian stopped instantly.
Dorian’s smile widened slightly.
"There he is."
Lucian’s expression became terrifyingly empty.
"What do you want."
Dorian looked almost thoughtful.
"You know what’s fascinating about powerful families?"
Nobody answered.
Dorian continued anyway.
"You all think money makes you untouchable." His gaze shifted between Lucian, Anthony, and Adrian. "But all it really does is make your children expensive."
Anthony visibly flinched.
Lucian’s voice lowered.
"You’re dead the second she’s safe."
Dorian actually laughed.
"No. That’s the interesting part." He tilted his head. "I was dead years ago."
That answer sat wrong.
Very wrong.
Theo noticed it too.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"You’re ex-black operations."
Dorian looked impressed.
"There’s the smart one."
Theo smiled humorlessly.
"Government disposal unit?"
"Something like that."
Allison looked between them.
"...Why do you both sound like rejected spy movie characters?"
"No time," Theo answered.
Fair.
The rain intensified violently.
Then Clara screamed again from inside the container.
"IT’S DARK!"
Lucian’s control cracked visibly that time.
Allison grabbed his wrist hard.
"Lucian."
His breathing had changed.
Too sharp.
Too uneven.
"She’s terrified."
"I know."
"She thinks nobody’s coming."
Lucian looked at the container like he physically wanted to rip it apart with his bare hands.
Dorian watched him carefully.
Studying him.
Waiting.
Then Allison realized something horrifying.
"He wants you emotional."
Lucian looked toward her sharply.
Allison stepped closer despite the gun still trained on them.
"This whole thing," she said quietly. "The recordings. The calls. Clara asking for you specifically." Her eyes narrowed. "He’s testing your reactions."
Dorian smiled slowly.
"There she is."
Theo muttered, "Oh I hate that response."
Dorian looked back toward Lucian.
"She’s smarter than your exes."
Allison’s face twisted.
"Oh absolutely fuck you."
Even Theo barked out a laugh at that.
Then suddenly—
A loud metallic BOOM echoed across the harbor.
Everyone turned.
Another ship emerged through the fog.
Black hull.
Massive.
Unmarked.
And heading directly toward them.
Anthony went pale.
"No."
Elias’s voice exploded through comms.
"That’s not a cargo transfer ship."
Adrian’s expression darkened instantly.
"Then what is it?"
Silence.
Then Elias answered quietly—
"It’s military."
The deck went dead silent except for rain and Clara’s muffled crying.
Dorian’s smile vanished for the first time.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Because suddenly—
For the first time all night—
Dorian Kreel looked nervous.
Then a spotlight from the approaching vessel snapped on.
Blinding white light flooded across the cargo ship deck.
A distorted voice thundered across the harbor through military-grade speakers.
"THIS IS A FEDERAL OPERATION."
Everyone froze.
Then the voice continued—
"STEP AWAY FROM THE CHILD."
