The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife
Chapter 45: The Man She Couldn’t Control
The recorder crackled softly in Lucian’s hand.
Then Vivienne’s voice filled Clara’s bedroom.
Smooth.
Elegant.
Dangerously calm.
"Did you like her room, Lucian?"
The entire room froze.
Theo’s expression darkened instantly.
Allison slowly crossed her arms.
"Oh," she muttered. "She’s in her supervillain era."
Lucian stared at the recorder without blinking.
"Where is Clara?"
A soft laugh answered him.
Not mocking.
Almost intimate.
"That’s your first question?"
Lucian’s voice sharpened immediately.
"Yes."
Silence stretched for half a second too long.
Then Vivienne sighed softly through the speaker.
"You always did ruin the dramatic parts."
Allison watched Lucian carefully now.
His face had gone unreadable again.
Which meant he was furious.
Not loud furious.
Lucian Calloway became quieter when he was dangerous.
The recorder crackled again.
"You’re collecting evidence," Vivienne said lightly. "Hairbrushes. Blankets. Toothbrushes." A pause. "DNA."
Theo’s brows lifted slightly.
Interesting.
She hadn’t expected that.
Lucian noticed too.
"So," he said calmly, "you didn’t think I’d verify the truth."
The silence on the other end changed shape.
Tiny.
But there.
Vivienne recovered quickly.
"Truth is subjective."
"No," Lucian said coldly. "Paternity tests aren’t."
Allison almost smiled.
Vivienne laughed softly.
"Still so logical."
"And you’re still manipulating children."
That hit.
Hard enough that even through the distorted speaker, Allison heard the slight shift in Vivienne’s breathing.
Then Vivienne’s voice cooled.
"You think this room proves anything?"
Lucian looked around slowly.
The drawings.
The stuffed rabbit.
The tiny sweaters folded neatly in the dresser.
"No," he said quietly. "I think it proves she existed here."
Allison’s chest tightened unexpectedly.
Because despite everything—
Despite the lies—
Lucian sounded worried about Clara.
Not defensive.
Not disgusted.
Worried.
Vivienne heard it too.
And for the first time since this started—
Her composure cracked slightly.
"You don’t know what I protected her from."
Lucian’s jaw flexed.
"You forged my name into her life."
"I gave her protection."
"You gave her confusion."
Silence.
Then—
"You were supposed to love her."
The words slipped out too fast.
Too emotional.
Everyone in the room went still.
Theo looked toward the recorder sharply.
Allison’s eyes narrowed.
There it was.
Not strategy.
Not leverage.
Obsession wrapped around grief.
Lucian’s expression darkened.
"I never even knew she existed."
Vivienne answered immediately.
"You were never supposed to."
That stopped him.
Not because he believed her.
Because the answer sounded honest.
Lucian’s voice lowered dangerously.
"Then why use my name?"
No answer.
And suddenly—
A loud crash sounded through the recorder.
Vivienne swore sharply in the background.
Then Anthony’s voice exploded through the line.
"You’re losing your damn mind!"
⸻
Vivienne
Vivienne spun around so fast the recorder nearly slipped from her hand.
Anthony stood in the doorway of the private coastal house she had moved to after abandoning the island property.
Disheveled.
Bruised.
Eyes bloodshot with exhaustion and rage.
He looked terrible.
Good.
Vivienne was not in the mood for polished men.
"What are you doing here?" she snapped.
Anthony slammed the door behind him.
"What am I doing here?" He laughed harshly. "You’re broadcasting monologues to Calloway from a hidden child safehouse!"
Vivienne muted the recorder temporarily.
Barely.
Because part of her still wanted Lucian listening.
Wanted him hearing her voice.
Wanted him thinking about her.
Pathetic.
She hated herself for it.
Anthony stalked further into the room.
"You didn’t tell me the videos were prerecorded."
"You weren’t supposed to know."
"You also didn’t tell me Lucian wasn’t actually the father."
Vivienne’s eyes turned lethal.
"Lower your voice."
Anthony barked out another ugly laugh.
"No. Absolutely not."
His gaze swept across the room.
Children’s books.
Small shoes near the couch.
A half-finished drawing left abandoned on the coffee table.
Reality.
Not strategy.
Anthony’s expression twisted.
"She’s real."
Vivienne stared at him coldly.
"Congratulations on basic observation."
Anthony ran both hands through his hair.
"You forged a billionaire into a paternity scandal using an actual child."
"Yes."
The bluntness startled even him.
Vivienne stepped closer.
"You forged company records. Manipulated investors. Stole Allison’s work. Don’t suddenly discover morality because children are involved."
Anthony flinched.
Then snapped right back.
"This isn’t morality. This is insanity."
Vivienne’s control cracked sharply.
"YOU think I’m insane?"
Anthony went silent.
Because there it was.
The real fracture beneath her perfection.
Vivienne pointed toward the muted recorder.
"He married her."
Anthony blinked.
"What?"
Vivienne laughed once.
Bitter.
Broken around the edges.
"He married her immediately. Publicly. Completely." Her voice rose. "Do you understand what that means?"
Anthony stared.
"She won."
The words came out raw.
Not elegant.
Not controlled.
Raw.
Anthony’s face changed slightly.
Because suddenly he understood something horrifying.
Vivienne Laurent-Cassel was not driven by strategy anymore.
She was grieving something she never truly had.
"He chose her," Vivienne whispered.
Then her expression hardened instantly again.
"And now he’ll destroy everything if I let him."
Anthony looked toward the recorder.
"You can’t still think he’ll come back to you after this."
Vivienne’s eyes flashed violently.
"You don’t understand Lucian."
"No," Anthony said. "I understand obsession. That’s the problem."
Vivienne stepped toward him slowly.
Dangerously.
"I built a future around that man before Allison Croft even entered Boston."
Anthony scoffed.
"And he still picked her."
That hit perfectly.
Vivienne slapped him hard enough to split his lip again.
Anthony staggered sideways.
"You’re emotional," he said quietly. "That’s why you’re losing."
Vivienne’s breathing turned uneven.
For one terrifying second, Anthony genuinely thought she might kill him.
Then—
Her phone rang.
Both of them froze.
Vivienne looked down at the screen.
Mother.
Her stomach dropped.
⸻
The Laurent-Cassel Family
Vivienne answered the call slowly.
"Mother."
"What," her mother said immediately, "the fuck are you doing?"
Anthony blinked.
Well.
That answered whether the Laurent-Cassel family approved.
Vivienne walked away from him toward the massive windows overlooking the cliffs.
"You shouldn’t curse."
"I’ll curse when my daughter publicly humiliates our family with forged paternity scandals involving a married man."
Vivienne’s jaw tightened.
"He wasn’t married then."
"He is now."
The words sliced deep.
Vivienne looked out at the ocean silently.
Her mother continued.
"The entire board is panicking. Your father is furious. International investors are calling us every ten minutes asking whether you fabricated medical documents."
Vivienne closed her eyes briefly.
"I had reasons."
"Oh, I’m sure your obsession felt deeply reasonable to you."
Anthony quietly sat down across the room.
Very interested suddenly.
Vivienne’s voice sharpened.
"You don’t understand."
"No," her mother snapped. "Apparently I do not understand why my daughter is destroying herself over Lucian Calloway when there are dozens of appropriate men in our social circle."
Vivienne laughed bitterly.
"Appropriate."
"You were raised better than this."
"No," Vivienne whispered. "I was raised colder than this."
Silence.
Then her mother’s voice lowered.
"Vivienne."
Too soft now.
Too dangerous.
"You used a child."
Vivienne’s throat tightened violently.
"She’s my daughter."
"And you used her."
The words hit harder than yelling.
Vivienne’s fingers trembled slightly around the phone.
Her mother continued quietly—
"You forged another man into her life because you could not accept rejection."
Vivienne snapped.
"He was supposed to be mine!"
The room went dead silent.
Anthony stared openly now.
Vivienne’s breathing turned ragged.
Too late.
Too honest.
Her mother spoke again carefully.
"...Vivienne."
But Vivienne couldn’t stop now.
"Do you know what it feels like to spend years beside someone and still never be chosen?" Her voice cracked sharply. "Do you know what it feels like to watch him look at another woman the way he never looked at you?"
Anthony looked genuinely uncomfortable now.
Vivienne laughed shakily.
"He was mine first."
"No," her mother said quietly. "You decided he belonged to you."
Vivienne’s eyes burned.
"I loved him."
"No," her mother whispered. "You built a fantasy around him because fantasies don’t reject you back."
That broke something.
Vivienne ended the call immediately.
Hard.
Violently.
The silence afterward felt enormous.
Anthony looked at her carefully.
Then quietly asked—
"Did you ever even tell Lucian how you felt?"
Vivienne looked toward the muted recorder still sitting on the table.
Then laughed.
Softly.
Broken.
"No."
⸻
The Calloways
Back in Boston, the Calloway estate had become a war zone.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Public relations teams.
And in the center of it—
Lucian’s grandfather sat calmly watching the news coverage.
Eighty-two years old.
Sharp-eyed.
Ruthless.
The old man looked toward Lucian’s uncle.
"She forged paternity documents."
"Yes."
"And Lucian married the Croft girl immediately."
A pause.
Then the old man smiled slightly.
"Good."
His son blinked. "Good?"
"She survived kidnapping and punched a Laurent-Cassel heiress in the face." He sipped his tea calmly. "Finally. Lucian picked someone interesting."
⸻
Back at the Island House
Lucian stood near Clara’s bed while the recorder remained active.
He had heard everything.
Vivienne’s mother.
Anthony.
The cracks in Vivienne’s voice.
And one sentence kept replaying in his head.
He was mine first.
Allison stepped beside him quietly.
"You okay?"
Lucian looked down at the tiny stuffed rabbit in his hand.
"No."
Honest again.
Allison’s expression softened.
"She’s unraveling."
"Yes."
"And dangerous."
"Yes."
Theo walked into the room holding a sealed evidence bag.
"We found more hair samples."
Lucian nodded once.
"Send everything."
Elias’s voice echoed from downstairs.
"DNA courier’s ready!"
Lucian moved toward the door.
Then paused.
Because something on Clara’s nightstand caught his attention.
A photograph.
Small.
Half-hidden beneath books.
Lucian picked it up slowly.
And froze.
Allison stepped closer immediately.
"What is it?"
Lucian turned the photo over.
A younger Vivienne stood beside a dark-haired man holding baby Clara.
Not Lucian.
Not even close.
Theo’s expression sharpened instantly.
"That’s not a dead man."
Allison frowned. "What?"
Theo pointed at the back of the photograph.
Timestamp.
Three months ago.
Lucian’s pulse slowed dangerously.
Because the clinic records stated Clara’s biological father died six years ago.
But this photo—
This photo showed a living man holding his daughter recently.
Allison looked at Lucian.
Then at the photo again.
And suddenly her stomach dropped.
"Lucian..."
Theo’s face darkened.
"Vivienne lied about the father being dead."
Then Elias ran upstairs holding his phone.
Pale.
"Guys."
Everyone turned.
Elias looked at the photograph.
Then at Lucian.
Then slowly said—
"We just got facial recognition confirmation."
Silence.
Then—
"That man is alive."
A beat.
"And he’s been inside the Laurent-Cassel financial network this entire time."
