The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife
Chapter 44: The Lie Goes Public
Anthony Morrison realized Vivienne had planned to betray everyone the second he saw the timestamp.
He was standing in the private lounge of the Nova Scotia ferry terminal safehouse—if "safehouse" could even describe the cold luxury prison Vivienne had dragged him into—when the live feed replayed across the television again.
The little girl.
The dock.
Vivienne’s calm smile.
"If you want answers, come alone."
Anthony stared harder.
Then suddenly lunged for the remote.
Pause.
Zoom.
Timestamp.
His stomach dropped.
"...No."
The footage wasn’t live.
The metadata flickered in the lower corner for half a second before the news station cropped it away.
Three months old.
Anthony slowly looked toward the hallway where Vivienne had disappeared earlier.
"She prerecorded it."
One of the guards glanced over nervously.
Anthony laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because suddenly everything made horrifying sense.
The Switzerland leak.
The Nova Scotia coordinates.
The carefully staged dock footage.
Vivienne never intended for Lucian to actually find the child quickly.
She wanted him chasing ghosts.
Buying time.
Preparing the narrative first.
Anthony’s pulse kicked harder.
"She planned this confrontation months ago," he whispered.
And somehow—
That scared him more than the kidnapping.
Because it meant Vivienne Laurent-Cassel had not snapped emotionally.
She had calculated emotionally.
Which was worse.
Much worse.
Then his phone buzzed violently.
One alert.
Then twenty.
Then hundreds.
Anthony looked down.
And went pale.
⸻
On the Jet
The cabin lights dimmed automatically as the plane cut through storm clouds over the Atlantic.
Most of the cabin had fallen into exhausted silence.
Most.
Lucian sat near the front table with Elias while Adrian reviewed legal documents beside them like international scandal management was a casual midnight hobby.
Allison curled sideways on the leather couch nearby wrapped in a blanket Lucian draped over her without asking earlier.
Simone slept lightly beside her with one AirPod still in because apparently she intended to survive billionaire warfare and maintain playlists simultaneously.
Theo sat near the window watching the dark ocean below.
Nobody relaxed fully.
Not after the video.
Not after the child’s voice.
Then Elias’s tablet exploded with alerts.
Lucian looked up immediately.
"What."
Elias stared at the screen.
And for the first time in hours—
Actually cursed.
"Oh, that bitch."
Adrian’s eyes sharpened instantly.
"Show me."
Elias turned the tablet around.
The headline spread across every major media platform simultaneously.
LUCIAN CALLAWAY ACCUSED OF ABANDONING SECRET CHILD
SEALED CLINIC RECORDS LEAK ONLINE
BUSINESS HEIR REFUSES PATERNITY OF SIX-YEAR-OLD GIRL
Attached beneath it—
The clinic files.
The forged records.
Vivienne’s prepared public statement.
Allison sat upright immediately.
"No."
Lucian read the statement once.
Then again.
His face changed slowly.
Dangerously.
The statement was elegant.
Calculated.
Weaponized.
⸻
"For years I remained silent to protect my daughter from public scrutiny. However, recent attacks against my integrity have forced me to acknowledge a painful truth.
Lucian Calloway is the biological father of my child and has privately refused involvement despite documented evidence.
I never intended to expose my daughter to this cruelty, but I will no longer allow powerful families to silence women and children."
⸻
Silence consumed the cabin.
Then Theo stood up sharply.
"She’s insane."
"No," Adrian said coldly. "She’s strategic."
Lucian remained terrifyingly still.
Too still.
Allison immediately recognized the danger in that.
"Lucian."
No response.
Elias looked sick. "The documents are spreading too fast to contain immediately."
Simone woke up halfway through the sentence and blinked sleepily at the screen.
Then fully woke up.
"Oh absolutely not."
Theo grabbed his own phone and scrolled rapidly.
"The public’s buying it."
"Of course they are," Adrian muttered. "The accusation came with paperwork."
Lucian finally spoke.
Quietly.
"She used the child."
The temperature in the cabin dropped.
Allison stood immediately and walked toward him.
"Lucian."
His hands curled slowly into fists against the table.
"She used a little girl as a shield."
There it was.
The anger.
Not polished.
Not controlled.
Real.
Theo watched him carefully.
Because Theo had known Lucian most of his life.
And Lucian almost never lost composure.
Almost.
Elias spoke cautiously. "We can issue an immediate denial."
Lucian looked up.
And every person in the cabin went silent.
Because his eyes had gone cold enough to scare them.
"No."
Allison blinked. "What?"
Lucian stood slowly.
"She wants chaos," he said quietly. "Emotional reactions. Public outrage. Desperation."
His jaw flexed once.
"She doesn’t get that."
Theo narrowed his eyes slightly.
"What are you doing?"
Lucian looked back at the screen.
"At the moment?" he said softly. "Nothing."
Allison stared at him.
"You’re not going to deny it?"
Lucian turned toward her fully now.
And for the first time since she met him—
He looked furious enough to destroy something.
"I’m going to bury her correctly."
The words landed like gunshots.
Lucian stepped closer to the monitor.
"She forged legal paternity documents. Altered medical records. Manipulated chain-of-custody evidence. Used a child in a coordinated media attack."
His voice stayed calm.
Too calm.
"That isn’t cleaned up with emotional press statements."
Adrian watched him carefully now.
Approval flickered briefly across his face.
Lucian continued.
"I want documented travel logs. Original clinic metadata. DNA confirmation. Security footage. Financial transfers." His gaze darkened. "And I want her confession."
Allison’s pulse jumped slightly.
Because this—
This was the real Lucian Calloway.
Not just protective.
Not just composed.
Strategic.
Lethal.
Theo exhaled slowly.
"There he is."
Simone blinked rapidly. "I’m both terrified and attracted to the leadership right now."
No one acknowledged that.
Lucian looked toward Elias.
"When we land, I want every item in that house processed."
Elias nodded immediately.
"Understood."
"And no public statement until we have proof strong enough to break her permanently."
Adrian finally spoke.
"Good."
Lucian’s eyes shifted toward him.
Adrian nodded once.
"Now you’re thinking."
Allison folded her arms.
"I hate that both of you become emotionally stable through revenge planning."
Theo pointed immediately. "THANK YOU."
Lucian’s mouth almost twitched.
Almost.
Then Allison stepped closer to him.
"Hey."
His gaze dropped to hers instantly.
"You okay?"
The question hit harder than he expected.
Lucian exhaled slowly.
"No."
Honest.
Finally.
Allison reached for his hand without thinking.
He took hers immediately.
Tight.
Grounding.
"You’re not alone in this," she said softly.
Something in his expression shifted.
Not softer.
More vulnerable.
Which was somehow rarer.
"I know."
And this time—
He meant it.
⸻
Nova Scotia
The island looked haunted.
Gray cliffs.
Violent waves.
Tall pine trees bending beneath cold wind.
By the time the convoy reached the Laurent-Cassel property, dawn painted the horizon in pale silver.
Lucian stepped out first.
Then immediately stopped.
The house sat silent.
No guards.
No movement.
No lights.
Theo swore softly.
"Too clean."
Adrian exited the second SUV, eyes narrowing as security teams spread across the property.
"All entries."
Teams moved immediately.
Lucian walked toward the front door without waiting.
Allison caught up beside him quickly.
"You think she’s gone."
"Yes."
"How long?"
Lucian looked at the untouched gravel.
"No recent tire marks."
Theo crouched near the front steps.
Then looked up.
"Three days minimum."
Allison’s stomach dropped.
"She knew we’d come."
"She wanted us to."
Lucian opened the front door.
The house inside was immaculate.
Too immaculate.
No personal warmth.
No rushed packing.
No panic.
Staged emptiness.
Like someone had carefully erased themselves.
Security swept every room.
"Clear."
"Second floor clear."
"No occupants."
Then—
An older woman emerged shakily from the kitchen hallway.
Housekeeper.
Maybe late sixties.
Terrified.
One of Adrian’s guards moved toward her carefully.
"It’s okay, ma’am—"
"Where is she?" the woman whispered immediately. "Is the little girl okay?"
Lucian stepped forward instantly.
"You know the child?"
The woman looked at him.
And recognition hit her face immediately.
"Oh my God."
Her eyes widened.
"You really came."
Silence.
The woman’s hands trembled.
"She said you wouldn’t."
Lucian’s expression darkened.
"When was the last time Vivienne was here?"
The woman swallowed.
"Months ago."
Allison blinked.
"What?"
The woman nodded shakily.
"The videos were recorded a long time ago. Miss Vivienne only visited twice after that."
Theo looked toward Lucian immediately.
"Called it."
Lucian ignored him.
"Where is the child now?"
Tears filled the woman’s eyes.
"I don’t know."
Lucian stepped closer.
"Please."
Something in his voice cracked slightly on the last word.
The woman noticed.
So did Allison.
The housekeeper looked heartbroken suddenly.
"She moved the girl after the media started reporting on the scandals. Two nights ago." Her voice trembled. "She said people were coming."
Allison’s chest tightened.
"What’s the child’s name?"
The woman hesitated.
Then whispered—
"Clara."
The name landed softly.
Real.
Human.
Not just the child anymore.
Clara.
Lucian closed his eyes briefly.
Then opened them again colder.
"Search everything."
Security spread immediately.
Rooms opened.
Closets checked.
Documents photographed.
Allison moved slowly through the upstairs hallway while Lucian entered what was clearly a child’s bedroom.
The room froze him instantly.
Small bed.
Bookshelves.
Paintings.
Stuffed rabbit.
The same rabbit from the video.
Lucian walked inside slowly.
Carefully.
Like entering too fast might somehow break something fragile.
Allison stopped in the doorway.
The room didn’t feel unloved.
That was the unsettling part.
Vivienne had cared for the child.
In her own damaged way.
There were drawings pinned near the desk.
A woman with dark hair.
A little girl beside her.
And another figure drawn taller beside them.
Male.
Black ink scribbled beneath it in uneven handwriting:
Daddy
Lucian’s jaw tightened violently.
Allison stepped closer carefully.
"Lucian."
He picked up the drawing slowly.
Not because he believed it.
Because a child did.
That hurt anyway.
Theo appeared behind them quietly.
Then stopped cold at the doorway.
"...shit."
Lucian looked toward Elias immediately.
"DNA."
Elias nodded.
"Already prepping kits."
Lucian moved through the room collecting carefully.
Hairbrush.
Toothbrush.
Child blanket.
Evidence.
Proof.
Truth.
Because Vivienne wanted emotion.
Lucian intended to answer with facts sharp enough to cut her apart publicly.
Then Allison noticed something near the bookshelf.
A small recorder.
Red blinking light.
Her stomach dropped.
"Lucian."
Everyone turned.
Allison picked it up carefully.
The recorder was active.
Recording.
Live.
Theo’s expression darkened immediately.
"She’s listening."
Then the recorder crackled softly.
And Vivienne’s voice filled the room.
Smooth.
Calm.
Waiting.
"Did you like her room, Lucian?"
