The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife

Chapter 46: The Father They Buried

  • Next Chapter

The island house no longer felt abandoned.

Now it felt haunted.

Not by ghosts.

By lies.

Lucian stood in Clara’s bedroom holding the photograph while storm winds rattled the windows hard enough to shake the glass.

The image remained burned into his mind.

Vivienne.

A dark-haired man.

Baby Clara in his arms.

Alive.

Not dead like the clinic documents claimed.

Alive recently.

Theo leaned against the doorway, jaw tight.

"That changes everything."

"No," Adrian said from behind them. "It confirms everything."

Allison folded her arms slowly.

"Vivienne lied about the father dying because dead men can’t contradict forged paternity claims."

Elias nodded grimly. "And if the biological father stayed hidden inside their financial network, she controlled the narrative completely."

Lucian’s gaze remained fixed on the photo.

The man holding Clara looked familiar now.

Sharp features.

Dark eyes.

Expensive watch.

Controlled posture.

Not flashy wealth.

Old wealth.

Dangerous wealth.

Then Elias’s phone beeped again.

He looked down.

And slowly exhaled.

"We have a name."

Everyone turned.

Elias lifted the screen slightly.

"Gabriel Vale."

Theo went still instantly.

"...shit."

Allison looked between them.

"You know him?"

Theo laughed once under his breath.

"Oh, everybody in their world knows Gabriel Vale."

Lucian’s expression darkened further.

Gabriel Vale.

Thirty-eight.

Corporate attorney.

Private acquisitions specialist.

Fixer for elite financial families.

A man who made scandals disappear before they reached headlines.

Powerful enough that politicians feared him.

Quiet enough that normal society barely knew he existed.

Theo crossed his arms.

"People call him the Ghost Attorney."

Allison frowned slightly.

"That sounds deeply illegal."

"It probably is," Theo answered.

Adrian took the photo from Lucian carefully.

Then his eyes narrowed.

"Interesting."

Lucian looked at him.

Adrian turned the picture over again.

"Timestamp says three months ago."

Theo’s expression sharpened immediately.

"So Vivienne lied recently. Not historically."

Allison blinked.

"What?"

Theo stepped closer.

"If the father died years ago, she could argue emotional confusion, old records, grief—something."

His voice hardened.

"But this?"

He pointed at the photo.

"This means she knowingly fabricated Lucian as the father while Gabriel Vale was actively alive and involved."

Silence.

Then Lucian finally spoke.

"She used Clara."

The words landed heavy.

Because now there was no emotional ambiguity left.

Vivienne hadn’t built a desperate lie years ago and become trapped in it.

She maintained it deliberately.

Repeatedly.

Recently.

Allison watched Lucian carefully again.

His anger had changed shape now.

Less explosive.

More focused.

That scared her more.

⸻

Gabriel Vale

Gabriel Vale sat silently at the far end of the Laurent-Cassel crisis table while the room around him descended into controlled chaos.

The conference room overlooked Manhattan through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, but nobody cared about the skyline tonight.

Not when Vivienne Laurent-Cassel had detonated a social and financial bomb large enough to shake multiple elite circles simultaneously.

Executives argued.

Lawyers whispered.

Family advisors panicked.

Gabriel stayed quiet.

Which made everyone more nervous.

Because Gabriel Vale was not loud.

He never needed to be.

At thirty-eight, Gabriel had built a reputation terrifying enough that entire corporations folded before lawsuits ever reached courtrooms.

Tall.

Lean.

Dark-haired.

The kind of handsome that looked dangerous instead of pretty.

Sharp black suits.

Cold gray eyes.

Calm voice.

Most people underestimated him because he smiled easily.

That was their mistake.

Gabriel looked down at the phone in his hand again.

Clara’s latest drawing.

Stick figures.

One labeled Mommy.

One labeled Me.

And one labeled Dad.

His throat tightened briefly.

Then the Laurent-Cassel family lawyer snapped—

"We need immediate damage control before the Calloways issue counter-evidence."

Gabriel looked up slowly.

Damage control.

Interesting phrase considering the child involved was his daughter.

Not Lucian’s.

His.

Vivienne sat near the head of the table in a cream silk blouse that still looked immaculate despite the absolute destruction of her life over the last forty-eight hours.

Only Gabriel noticed the cracks.

The slight tremor in her fingers.

The exhaustion beneath the makeup.

The way she kept glancing toward her phone waiting for Lucian to call.

He hated that part most.

Even now—

Even after all this—

Part of her still wanted Lucian.

Gabriel looked away before bitterness fully surfaced.

Dangerous emotion.

Useless emotion.

But God—

He had loved Vivienne Laurent-Cassel for almost twelve years.

Which was humiliating enough privately.

Publicly?

It would’ve been catastrophic.

They met when Vivienne was twenty-four and furious at the world in ways she hid beautifully.

Gabriel had been twenty-six already working quietly behind elite financial networks handling scandals no one else could clean properly.

Vivienne fascinated him immediately.

Not because she was kind.

She wasn’t.

Not soft either.

Vivienne Laurent-Cassel had been raised like a weapon pretending to be a woman.

And Gabriel—

God help him—

Loved her anyway.

Their relationship started messy.

Late nights after galas.

Private penthouses.

Arguments that turned into sex because neither of them knew how to communicate normally.

Gabriel knew about Lucian from the beginning.

Everyone did.

Lucian Calloway had always existed like a shadow inside Vivienne’s life.

Not officially hers.

But emotionally untouchable.

Gabriel remembered the first time he realized it fully.

Vivienne had fallen asleep beside him after a charity event years ago.

And in her sleep—

She whispered Lucian’s name.

Gabriel should’ve left then.

Instead—

He stayed.

Like an idiot.

Then Clara happened.

Gabriel still remembered the night Vivienne told him she was pregnant.

No dramatic reveal.

No tears.

Just Vivienne standing in his penthouse kitchen holding a champagne glass she couldn’t drink.

Terrified.

That was what shocked him most.

Vivienne Laurent-Cassel never looked terrified.

Until then.

Gabriel remembered crossing the room slowly.

"You okay?"

Vivienne laughed shakily.

"No."

Then she handed him the medical report.

Pregnant.

Eight weeks.

Gabriel looked up immediately.

And despite the fear clawing through him—

Despite the disaster this represented politically and socially—

He smiled.

Actually smiled.

Vivienne stared at him like he’d lost his mind.

"You’re happy?"

Gabriel touched her face carefully.

"Yes."

Her eyes filled unexpectedly.

Not with joy.

With panic.

"Lucian can’t know."

That hurt.

Even then.

Especially then.

Because she didn’t say the family couldn’t know.

She said Lucian.

Gabriel should’ve understood everything in that moment.

Instead—

He stayed.

Again.

He stayed through the hidden pregnancy.

Through the private birth.

Through the carefully constructed lie.

Because Vivienne promised eventually things would settle.

Eventually Clara would be acknowledged properly.

Eventually they’d stop hiding.

But eventually never came.

And now?

Now Lucian Calloway’s face sat across every international news platform attached to Gabriel’s daughter.

Gabriel’s hand tightened around the phone.

He had seen Clara three weeks ago.

She ran into his arms laughing because Vivienne still allowed "Uncle Gabriel" visits.

Uncle.

The word tasted like acid now.

Across the room, Vivienne finally looked toward him.

Their eyes met.

And Gabriel realized something immediately.

She still planned to continue the lie.

Unbelievable.

⸻

The Laurent-Cassel Crisis

"Vivienne."

Her father’s voice cracked sharply through the room.

"What exactly is your endgame here?"

Vivienne lifted her chin slightly.

"I’m protecting Clara."

Gabriel almost laughed.

Instead he stood slowly.

The room quieted immediately.

Because when Gabriel Vale moved, powerful people paid attention.

Vivienne’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"Gabriel."

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then asked quietly—

"Are you planning to tell them I’m alive eventually?"

The room froze.

Every Laurent-Cassel executive went still.

Vivienne’s mother closed her eyes briefly like she physically could not believe this conversation existed.

Vivienne stood immediately.

"Not here."

Gabriel ignored her.

"You announced another man as my daughter’s father internationally."

Vivienne’s voice sharpened. "I did what was necessary."

"For who?"

"For Clara!"

"No," Gabriel said quietly. "For you."

That hit perfectly.

Vivienne’s breathing changed instantly.

Her father looked between them both slowly.

Then realization hit his face like a train.

"...Gabriel."

Gabriel finally looked toward the older man.

"Yes."

The room detonated.

"What the hell do you mean yes?"

"How long?"

"Is Clara his?"

"You lied to us too?!"

Vivienne snapped suddenly.

"Enough!"

Silence crashed down immediately.

Gabriel watched her carefully.

Still beautiful.

Still controlled.

Still breaking apart beneath the surface.

"You don’t understand," Vivienne whispered.

"No," Gabriel said softly. "I understand too well."

Then her phone rang.

Everyone stopped again.

Vivienne looked down.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"Yes?"

A familiar older male voice answered immediately.

"Miss Laurent-Cassel."

Vivienne went cold instantly.

Lucian’s grandfather.

Oh no.

The old man continued calmly—

"I wanted to personally inform you that if my grandson’s name is not publicly cleared within twenty-four hours, the Calloways will pursue criminal prosecution internationally."

The room went silent.

Vivienne swallowed once.

"You can’t prove—"

"Oh, child," the old man interrupted almost kindly. "You seem confused."

His voice cooled sharply.

"This family does not threaten people unless we already possess evidence."

Vivienne’s stomach dropped.

Then the old man added one final sentence—

"And for what it’s worth?"

A pause.

"Lucian always hated liars."

The line disconnected.

Vivienne stood frozen.

Gabriel looked at her quietly.

Then finally asked the question he should’ve demanded years ago.

"Why him?"

Vivienne’s eyes filled instantly.

Not tears.

Fury.

"Because he saw me before everyone else wanted something from me."

Gabriel’s chest tightened painfully.

"And I didn’t?"

Vivienne looked at him.

Actually looked at him.

And for one devastating second—

Guilt flickered across her face.

Too little.

Too late.

⸻

Back to Lucian

The private jet cut through dawn skies heading back toward Boston.

Inside the cabin, tension sat thick enough to choke on.

Lucian stood near the window staring out at clouds while the emergency DNA processing team Adrian arranged worked remotely through encrypted channels.

Everything moved fast now.

Too fast.

Allison approached quietly holding two cups of coffee.

"You’ve been standing there for twenty minutes."

Lucian took the cup automatically.

"Have I?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"Also you look one inconvenience away from becoming a Batman villain."

That almost pulled a smile from him.

Almost.

Allison leaned against the seat beside him.

"You okay?"

Lucian exhaled slowly.

"I don’t know what bothers me more."

"What?"

"That Vivienne used my name."

His voice hardened.

"Or that Clara believed it."

The honesty in that hit Allison hard.

She reached for his free hand gently.

Lucian looked down at their fingers intertwined.

Then at the massive diamond ring on her hand.

His wife.

Still felt unreal.

Allison noticed the look immediately.

"What?"

His voice lowered.

"You’re still here."

She blinked.

"Well... yes. We’re on the same aircraft."

A tiny huff of laughter escaped him finally.

Then his expression darkened again.

"She made that little girl ask if I was her father on camera."

Allison’s chest tightened.

"She weaponized confusion."

Lucian nodded once.

Then Elias suddenly stood from the workstation.

Everyone looked up immediately.

"What?" Adrian asked sharply.

Elias stared at the incoming file.

Then slowly looked toward Lucian.

"We got the preliminary rush results."

The cabin went dead silent.

Lucian stepped forward.

"And?"

Elias swallowed.

"The child is not biologically related to you."

Nobody breathed.

Then—

Another notification slammed onto Elias’s screen.

His face changed instantly.

Worse this time.

"What now?" Theo asked sharply.

Elias looked up slowly.

"Gabriel Vale just filed emergency legal custody paperwork for Clara."

Silence.

Then Allison frowned.

"That’s good, isn’t it?"

Theo’s expression darkened immediately.

"No."

Lucian already understood too.

Because Gabriel Vale only moved publicly now for one reason.

War.

Then Elias read the final line of the filing aloud.

"Petitioner claims the child is in immediate danger due to actions taken by Vivienne Laurent-Cassel."

A beat.

Then—

"Current location of child unknown."
