Chapter 398: Chapter 134: Promotion! Lynch is Tier Three
But he was so nervous at that moment that he couldn’t help but stutter, "Father... The teacher said that the reason Lakefront Town can accommodate so many refugees and has developed so well is all thanks to the grace of the great Lord of Holy Light. She wants all the students to thank the Lord of Holy Light and remember His grace... And-and she also said that anyone who doesn’t believe in the Holy Light is a heretic, and they should all be purified..."
"Yes, yes, yes! *sniffle*~~" Esther chimed in, nodding vigorously from the side.
Although she was the older sister, her intelligence after her awakening was clearly no match for her younger brother Dragon Flame’s. She could only use simple language to echo his words.
"She said... she said Esther is a monster... a blasphemy... that she wants to burn Esther..." The little Vampire’s eyes reddened as she spoke. On the verge of tears, she clutched Lynch’s sleeve. "Papa, Esther isn’t a monster... Esther is a very good girl..."
"I know. Esther is the best-behaved girl of all." Lynch gently ruffled her hair, but his eyes gradually grew cold.
He stood up and faced the female teacher, a sharp edge to his gentle voice. "Ma’am, do you believe that our Lakefront Town’s ability to accommodate so many refugees on this war-torn frontier and provide everyone with a peaceful home to live and work in is a gift from the Lord of Holy Light?"
The female teacher was unnerved by Lynch’s stare, but she steeled herself and said, "Is it not? Lord Lynch, while you may be powerful, Lakefront Town’s current success is indeed a gift from the Lord of Holy Light. These two children of yours—one is an Undead Creature, and the other... is a Dragon Descendant Kobold. By their very nature, they represent darkness and chaos. As a believer in the Holy Light, I have an obligation to guide them toward the correct path. If—"
"One moment." Lynch gently raised his hand, cutting her off in a mild tone. "The North Wind Legion has thirteen battle groups, making for over a hundred battalions in total. I am merely the commander of a single one of them."
"Moreover, I came here and built this from nothing. I didn’t take so much as a single supply from the Legion, nor did I bring a single soldier. I have toiled and struggled to develop this town to its current state, and you call it a gift from the Lord of Holy Light... In that case, please tell me, why did the Lord of Holy Light bless me alone, and not any of the other hundred-odd battalion commanders? Keep in mind, among those commanders are many devout believers in the Holy Light. Why would He choose to favor me, a Necromancer?"
The female teacher froze for a second, then piously pressed her palms together. "That is because the Lord of Holy Light wishes to enlighten you, to help you see the error of your ways and return to the right path... He merely borrowed your hands to establish Lakefront Town and give the refugees a place to live. Praise be to the great Lord of Holy Light~!"
Hearing this, the ominous feeling in Aus’s heart grew ever stronger.
Even Catherine and Avril, two young women of the Holy Light System, couldn’t help but frown slightly.
Although they both believed in the Holy Light, they had also witnessed firsthand the entire process of Lakefront Town’s creation from nothing and were keenly aware of the hardships involved.
Olivia, with her Warrior background, and the Mage Lilith frowned openly, their displeasure obvious.
Lynch, however, remained outwardly calm.
He stopped paying the woman any mind and instead turned to the other teachers standing with her, the ones also threatening to strike. He asked coolly, "Do you all think so, too?"
The handful of men and women glanced at one another.
Two of them hesitated before answering, "We didn’t think so at first, but after speaking with Mary... we feel that... it must be the Lord’s grace..."
But the other two, after a moment’s hesitation, took two steps back, clearly distancing themselves from the group.
One of them, a middle-aged man, frowned and shook his head slightly. "To be honest, I attended a Church school as a child, and all the teachers there said the same things, so I never gave the matter much thought. But... something about this doesn’t feel right... Lakefront Town is what it is today because everyone worked together."
Lynch nodded, then turned to the headmaster. "Headmaster Albert," he asked in a gentle tone, "what are your thoughts on this?"
Albert hurriedly bowed and said solemnly, "Lakefront Town is what it is today entirely thanks to you, Lord Lynch! If there truly is any divine protection at play, it must be from the Nether God you believe in!"
Lynch’s gaze swept over the core members of Lakefront Town standing behind him—Aus, Sea Song, Catherine, Avril, Olivia, and Lilith—observing the expressions on their faces.
He spoke with a grave expression, "Lakefront Town’s success today is not a gift from the Lord of Holy Light, nor is it due to the favor of the Nether God. The credit does not belong to me, Lynch, alone, nor does it belong to Governor Aus. It belongs to every single person present—every Soldier, every member of the militia, every refugee, even every last Kobold and every dwarf."
"Lakefront Town was built by thousands upon thousands of individuals with their own two hands. No one can strip any one of them of the credit they are due!"
He paused, then said solemnly, "There’s an old saying from my homeland: ’Human determination can conquer the heavens.’ As long as we stand united, we can create any miracle!"
This resonated most deeply with Aus. His eyes shone as he nodded emphatically.
Having gone from a disgraced Prince to where he was today, he understood all too well the hardships they had faced.
’Every brick and tile of this town was earned with everyone’s blood and sweat,’ he thought. ’It has absolutely nothing to do with some god’s gift.’
Sea Song was clearly in full agreement as well.
Although she was a believer in the Lady of the Moon, she would never deny the value of an individual’s hard work or accomplishments.
’In her eyes, Lakefront Town’s development is truly a remarkable feat. If the credit had to go to just one person, it would undoubtedly be Lord Lynch. But since Lynch said the credit belongs to everyone, then it belongs to everyone.’
