Chapter 232: Chapter 110: Pale Elegy: What a Lively Scene

At Raymond’s command, the defenders began their attack.

The two heavy ballistae on the city walls, still in relatively good condition, were the first to roar to life. Giant crossbow arrows, as thick as a child’s arm, howled through the air, streaking straight for the high platform.

Meanwhile, Raymond waved his own Magic Staff, and a bone spear shot forth, aimed directly at the spell-casting Catastrophe Mage.

The Mages and archers also unleashed a volley of Fireballs, ice cones, and arrows with all their might, providing ranged suppressive fire.

However, the Blue Scarf forces, being the attackers, were well-prepared for such a response.

Elite heavy-shield soldiers immediately moved to block the Catastrophe Mage and the high platform. With a great roar, they slammed their man-high, iron-clad shields into the ground and onto the platform, rapidly forming an impenetrable wall of steel.

Almost simultaneously, the Mages accompanying the army also waved their Magic Staffs. The light of spells like "Rock Skin," "Deflection Field," and "Elemental Resistance Shield" fell upon the heavy-shield soldiers one after another.

The next moment.

BANG!

CRACK~!!

Amid the deafening booms, the two giant crossbow arrows slammed into the shield wall, which had been reinforced with multiple layers of Magic.

The immense recoil force snapped the thick shafts instantly, yet the arrows only left two deep dents on the shields’ surfaces, failing to penetrate.

Raymond’s Death Bone Spear was even more powerful. Its corrosive energy made one of the giant shields SIZZLE, nearly boring right through it. However, a subsequent Deflection Field sent it askew, causing it to fly off harmlessly into the sky.

The other scattered attacks were even more easily blocked or deflected.

At the same time, the Blue Scarf’s ranged units and catapults launched a counterattack. A dense shower of arrows and stones rained down on the city walls, pinning down the defenders so they couldn’t even lift their heads, let alone organize another volley of harassing fire.

The Catastrophe Mage, however, seemed completely oblivious to the ranged exchange between the two armies.

His entire focus was immersed in the summoning ritual.

Mana poured from him into the Array as beads of sweat rolled down his temples, instantly evaporating into wisps of white steam in the searing heat.

Summoning a being beyond his tier was an immense burden even for someone of his power, and it demanded his absolute concentration.

Suddenly.

The space at the center of the summoning Array tore open, and magma wreathed in Blazing Flame began to pour out from the rift.

Simultaneously.

A gigantic hand emerged from the magma. It seemed to be composed of chunks of molten rock and flowing, dark flames, giving it a bizarre appearance.

The hand braced itself on the Array, and a hideous, magma-dripping head forced its way out of the spatial rift.

A pair of curved demon horns grew from its head, and two balls of Blazing Flame roiled and burned within its eye sockets. Merely by revealing its upper body, a terrifying heat and suffocating pressure washed over half the battlefield.

A Flame Demon!

And an Elite Flame Demon at that!

The defenders on the walls turned deathly pale. Many instinctively backed away, their morale plummeting at a visible rate.

Seeing this, the Blue Scarf forces erupted in thunderous cheers, as if victory were already in their grasp.

Raymond’s face also paled. He hastily waved his Magic Staff again, conjuring a bone spear that shot straight toward the Flame Demon’s head.

The Flame Demon casually swatted with one of its giant, flaming hands.

FZZZT~!

The death energy and Hellfire collided, and the bone spear was instantly incinerated into a puff of ash.

’Holy shit... This thing is strong!’ Raymond hissed, muttering to himself.

’Junior Brother, oh, Junior Brother, it’s all up to you now... If this Elite Flame Demon—probably a Tier Seven—actually breaches the walls, today is likely my last. My life is in your hands...’

「At this moment.」

On the high platform, the Catastrophe Mage, Horn Solar, had clearly reached the most critical moment of his ritual.

His crimson hair and beard stood on end as his Magic Power surged, all of it pouring into the summoning Array below. He was trying to quickly pull the Flame Demon completely through and use the Array’s power to brand its soul with a mark of obedience.

’Now!’

Having unnoticeably blended into the ranks of a now-dead, scar-faced commander’s subordinates, Lynch used the bodies of the surrounding soldiers as cover and quietly crouched down. With a flip of his palm, a Raven’s Whisper appeared in his hand.

His lips moved in a rapid chant, and the tip of his Magic Staff briefly flashed with a white light.

Weakness Curse!

Lynch had already trained this skill to Level 4. Some Necromancers, even those at Tier Four, might not be his match when it came to this particular Curse.

Thus, the Curse shot out with incredible speed and from a wickedly clever angle, striking the Catastrophe Mage in the blink of an eye.

"Urk?!"

The Catastrophe Mage, who had been completely focused on his spell, suddenly shuddered. An intense wave of weakness washed over him, causing even the flow of his Magic Power, which he had been pushing to its limit, to seize up.

BLECH~!!

The Magic backlash was swift and brutal. The Catastrophe Mage felt as if he’d been struck in the chest, and he uncontrollably vomited a mouthful of blood.

However, before he could even process what had happened, a WHOOSHING sound tore through the air beside his ear.

A spear of light, radiating a searingly holy aura, shot from an unknown location, traveling upward at an angle.

SCHLICK!

In an instant.

The spear of Holy Light pierced the Catastrophe Mage’s lower abdomen, tore diagonally upward through his organs, and burst out through the vertebrae of his neck.

A spray of blood and bone shards erupted.
