Wilderness (City A)

Evelina went to the border silently. The starlight butterfly beast and the Beast Tamer named Jeremy Night were on her mind.

She wondered where they were from, knowing they were certainly not from the 4th Zone.

If they were from the 4th Zone, she would have known, so she was incredibly curious about them.

[I felt threatened upon seeing the Tier-4 Starlight Butterfly.]

Her lifeline beast communicated with her. Hearing this, Evelina stopped in midair for a second, her face turning serious.

Her lifeline beast had been quiet the whole time, but now she understood the reason why.

"What do you feel?" she asked.

[It must be a high-ranked bloodline beast. I have seen such beasts in the top three zones, but it’s rare to find one here.]

[Furthermore, it’s exceptionally rare for a Beast Tamer outside the top three zones to bond with one.]

Evelina listened carefully, memorizing the information. She decided to investigate their backgrounds later.

Swoosh!

The next second, she darted toward the border. Her presence remained undetected. She didn’t spread her mental power, but her vision was wide, covering the maximum range.

She saw higher-tier corrupted beasts crossing the border, and her eyes flashed with coldness. Continuing to observe the area, she noticed several Tier-8 beasts hiding in the unknown land.

A few of them attempted to cross. Shifting her gaze to this side of the border, she saw City Governors Corvin and Garran confronting the Tier-8 beasts, doing their part.

Other reputed high-tier Beast Tamers were fighting against the corrupted beasts as well. She nodded to herself.

Because of their hard work, not a single Tier-8 corrupted beast had breached the core area. Otherwise, she knew Jeremy Night and his starlight butterfly would have encountered them.

She spent more time at the border, but there was no sign of a Tier-9 beast whatsoever. The waiting frustrated her, but as an experienced Beast Tamer, she knew she had to be patient.

Even the cunning Tier-9 corrupted beast was biding its time, so she could do the same.

Meanwhile, a thousand miles into the unknown land, an eight-meter-tall beast with black and brown fur rested on the ground.

It possessed unusual spikes on its forehead that ran all the way down its back to its tail. This was the Mutated Tier-9 Spiked Tiger Beast.

It had its sights set on City A, driven by a desire for revenge. The city’s people and Beast Tamers had attacked and injured it during its early days.

The beast had somehow survived, escaping into the unknown land where it used every opportunity to grow stronger.

It had previously attempted to breach City A, but the City Governors had somehow repelled the attack.

This had placed the city on high alert. Before the humans could ask for reinforcements, the tiger retreated, knowing humanity possessed Beast Tamers of equal strength.

It was currently testing to see if those powerful Beast Tamers were hiding within the city. So far, it had received confirmation through other beasts that no one above Tier-8 had appeared.

Still, the Mutated Tiger Beast wanted to be absolutely sure. Its current goal was to eliminate the threat of the Tier-8 Beast Tamers.

If it could reduce their numbers, it would have a much better opportunity to destroy City A.

Aside from the Tier-9s, the Tier-8 Beast Tamers posed the greatest threat, as some possessed rare abilities that could genuinely hurt a Tier-9 beast.

Therefore, the tiger wanted the Tier-8 Beast Tamers wiped out in large numbers.

....

The next morning.

Jeremy Night and Stella were resting beneath a bedrock. They had hunted down a couple of corrupted beasts the previous night and had rescued some people in the process.

Those survivors, like previous Beast Taming Teams, were shocked upon seeing Stella and equally stunned by the pair’s strength.

Jeremy was awakened by the morning sunlight, feeling refreshed.

He recalled the battle from the night before; he had expected more corrupted beasts to appear, but to his surprise, their numbers had been moderate.

This had given both him and Stella some time to rest. He had expected beasts to flood the core and inner areas, especially since the City Governor herself had come to the wilderness.

[What are you thinking about?] Stella asked.

He replied, "I’m thinking about the City Governor. I wonder what she did last night to prevent the corrupted beasts from appearing in large numbers."

[She is the strongest Beast Tamer I have ever seen,] she said.

Jeremy raised his eyebrows. At first, he thought she was from the Human Alliance, but she was actually one of the local governors.

"Is she stronger than the Tier-8 Hybrid Bird?" he asked.

[She is much more dangerous than the Hybrid Beast, and her lifeline beast is not simple either,] she told him.

Jeremy fell silent, confirming his suspicion that the City Governor was a Tier-9 Beast Tamer.

He figured this information was kept a strict secret; otherwise, he would have heard about it during his first visit to the city.

His respect for her deepened. He had never heard of a Tier-9 Beast Tamer serving as a City Governor, assuming they all resided in the Human Alliance.

Seeing someone of that caliber protecting the city inspired him.

His goal was to become a Tier-9 Beast Tamer one day, though he couldn’t imagine what it felt like to have the safety of an entire city resting on his shoulders.

His gaze shifted toward the wilderness. He was determined to contribute in any way possible to solve the city’s crisis.

He had seen the attacks of a Colossal Beast before, something far more dangerous than a Tier-9 Beast. Compared to the people here, he had survived much worse.

Furthermore, he had already seen Stella fight a Tier-8 Beast, and it wouldn’t be long before she went up against a Tier-9. He knew that day was coming soon.

Collecting his thoughts, he decided to resume their work. He thinks it’s time to help more people.

Stella was excited to hunt down more beasts.
