Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord
Chapter 828 - 825 Powder Production
Chapter 828: Chapter 825 Powder Production
The next day in Sedona City, Lucas and Mina had just finished breakfast and boarded a carriage heading to the Research Department.
Tap, tap, tap...
Lucas and Mina’s itinerary today was classified, because they were heading to inspect the workshop where black powder was produced.
Currently, only an extremely small handful of people knew about gunpowder. Mina was one of them.
Although she knew of gunpowder’s existence, Mina was unaware of its true power and terror. Lucas didn’t plan on exposing this era-transcending creation too early.
Fortunately, Mina was sensible; she knew what to ask and what not to ask.
Tap, tap, tap...
Soon, the carriage stopped in front of the Research Department.
This was an open clearing. Soldiers patrolled the grounds, and in the very center stood a single, small cement building. There were no other structures around it, only a sprawling lawn.
Originally, this area was a massive crater. Later, Lucas had people dig even further down along the crater.
Ultimately, a foundation was laid, and an underground laboratory was built. After covering the roof with soil and planting grass over it, it became impossible to tell that a secret underground lab lay beneath the surface.
This was the place Lucas used to research and develop gunpowder. The surrounding area was deliberately open. Firstly, for secrecy; secondly, to make it impossible for anyone to approach and infiltrate the area undetected.
Above ground, multiple squads of soldiers patrolled twenty-four hours a day. With the surrounding area completely empty, there was absolutely no chance for anyone to sneak close.
The moment someone appeared in this open clearing, they would be spotted instantly and surrounded by soldiers the very next second.
The entrance to this underground laboratory was that small cement building. Dozens of soldiers stood guard around it. The cement building had no windows, only a heavy door made of steel, secured by a massive padlock. It could not be easily opened; only those carrying Lucas’s handwritten order were permitted to enter or exit.
As Lucas and Mina arrived, the soldiers guarding the door immediately saluted.
"Open the door."
"Yes, my lord!" A soldier responded respectfully, pulling a key from his person to unlock the padlock.
Clack, clack...
Then, two more soldiers stepped forward, producing their own keys. Only with the three of them working together could the heavy door slowly be pulled open. For security reasons, the door was several centimeters thick and required all three keys simultaneously to unlock.
Lucas calmly led Mina inside. The building contained nothing but a staircase leading underground.
Tap, tap, tap...
Lucas pulled out a pre-prepared flashlight and walked downwards, only their footsteps echoing in the silence.
The stairs weren’t very deep, and they soon reached the bottom. A passageway stretched before them. After walking further in, another door appeared, guarded by four soldiers.
"Open the door," Lucas ordered deeply.
"Yes, my lord!" The soldiers replied. This door was much lighter, easily opened by two people.
Behind the door were two rooms. One had a wooden sign reading ’Locker Room’, while the other was completely sealed shut.
At the door of the sealed room stood four special operatives standing guard, their faces solemn, their hands resting on swords. Seeing Lucas arrive, they saluted but remained firmly stationed at the door.
Lucas nodded to the four operatives and led Mina into the sealed room. Upon entering, they saw eight researchers busy at their workstations.
All of them were wearing linen clothing. Not a single trace of iron was allowed into this laboratory—a strict safety protocol. Furthermore, every single item and piece of equipment inside the lab was made entirely of wood.
"..." Mina looked in amazement at everything inside. She wanted to ask questions, but remembering the solemn atmosphere along the way, she suppressed her curiosity.
The appearance of Lucas and Mina caught the attention of the eight workers. They put down their tools, respectful and awed smiles appearing on their faces.
These eight people had been found by Mina at Lucas’s behest. They were all mutes, either congenital or acquired, and completely illiterate. This was exactly what Lucas required to ensure the secret of gunpowder never leaked out.
As for why they were so happy, it was because Lucas had promised to take good care of their families, and their monthly salary here was a massive two silver coins. This was the source of their joy.
Of course, the price was that once the black powder project began, they wouldn’t be able to leave this laboratory for a very long time.
Their future lives would be restricted. For instance, a dedicated courtyard would be built for them in Sedona City, and they would live inside it to minimize their contact with the outside world.
They were aware of this condition, but they didn’t care. What they valued was the monthly salary of two silver coins. That amount was more than enough to ensure their families lived very comfortable lives.
This was also the reason Lucas had chosen them. Coming from impoverished backgrounds, they were in desperate need of money. Before finalizing his choices, they had undergone a long period of observation and testing. Facts proved they were highly suited for this job.
"You’ve all worked hard," Lucas smiled faintly.
The eight immediately waved their hands, indicating it wasn’t hard work at all.
The food here was excellent, with meat at every meal. This was another perk Lucas provided to ensure they were willingly and happily working for him here.
"How much gunpowder have you produced?" Lucas asked as he inspected their workstations.
A hint of bashfulness appeared on the eight faces as they hurriedly led Lucas to a corner. Two wooden boxes were stacked there, filled with the gunpowder they had produced recently.
"Excellent. Continue your research, and ensure you strictly follow the safety protocols," Lucas nodded in satisfaction after inspecting the black powder.
He was considering whether to use a portion of it for road construction or mining operations.
Lucas then observed the production process of the eight workers, nodded approvingly, and led Mina out of the black powder production room. They returned to the surface and headed to their next inspection site.
