Chapter 827: Chapter 824 Delivering Oneself

Dusk, outside the volcanic valley in the Forbidden Mountains.

"Roar..." Within the valley, a tyrannical beast’s roar echoed throughout.

Tap, tap, tap...

Crack.

The sound of breaking branches snapped through the air. Karl and Santner ran in terror, constantly glancing behind them. Only after the roaring ceased did they slowly come to a stop.

Dragging their exhausted bodies back to their cave shelter, the two slumped onto the ground, entirely drained. They looked at each other’s bloodless faces, caked in dirt and grime, resembling two absolute savages.

"Failed again," Santner’s face was filled with utter unwillingness. This was their sixth attempt since arriving at this valley to try and venture inside.

But every single time they got close, they were discovered by the giant beast, forcing them to flee in miserable panic.

The original squad had been completely wiped out during these attempts. The other five knights had all died in the giant beast’s jaws, becoming its food.

Conversely, the two of them—perhaps out of sheer dumb luck—managed to escape every time, scurrying back to their hidden cave.

And this time was just like the rest. They had barely made it halfway in before being discovered by the giant beast, leaving them no choice but to run for their lives.

Even so, they almost hadn’t made it out just now. Although they escaped, they had sustained significant injuries.

"Your Highness, why don’t we just give up..." Karl’s face was etched with exhaustion. He gripped his arm tightly, his eyes filled with terror; his hand had been deeply scratched by branches during their frantic escape.

"Impossible. I must reach the Divine Heavenly Kingdom. I want immortality, and the opportunity is right before my eyes!" Santner said coldly, his eyes burning with fanatical zeal.

A bitter taste filled Karl’s mouth. He knew Santner had gone completely mad. Saying anything now was useless. How could the two of them possibly be a match for that giant beast?

If it weren’t for the abundance of wild fruits near this valley, the two of them would have likely starved to death before ever finding the Divine Heavenly Kingdom.

Because they had been subsisting solely on wild fruits lately, the two had lost a massive amount of weight. Their faces were sallow and emaciated, looking even more wretched than refugees.

"Karl, do you not desire immortality?" Santner’s eyes were bloodshot as he looked at Karl and asked in a deep voice.

Clearly, neither of them had rested properly in a very long time, and they were already thoroughly exhausted.

"I... I do..." Karl froze for a moment before stammering an answer.

However, right now, his heart was inching close to despair. In this situation, whether they could even leave this place alive was highly questionable. As for immortality, he felt it was entirely hopeless.

"If you want immortality, then do not give up! Next time, we will definitely be able to enter the Divine Heavenly Kingdom!" Santner said with fanatical, blind confidence.

Karl was now truly in despair. Looking at Santner’s state, it was clear he had absolutely no intention of giving up.

He pondered internally whether he should just abandon the other party and flee for his life alone.

He no longer wanted to find this Divine Heavenly Kingdom, nor did he want immortality. He was about to lose his life; what was the point of talking about immortality?

"Yes..." Karl feigned a fanatical look and nodded in response.

"Excellent. When the time comes, only the two of us in this world will achieve immortality. Hahaha..." Santner laughed maniacally.

"My Lord, keep your voice down! Careful not to attract the giant beast!" Karl said hurriedly, his face pale with fright. He was tempted to grab a rock and smash Santner to death.

"Urgh..." Santner embarrassedly shut his mouth and leaned against the cave wall.

Karl’s eyes darted around. He looked outside the cave; the sky was gradually darkening.

Grumble... Santner’s stomach let out a loud rumble.

Dragging his weary body, he sat up and reached out to the dirt beside him, only to realize that the wild fruits they had picked yesterday were already gone.

"Karl, go find some more wild fruits and bring back some dry firewood," Santner turned to Karl and ordered.

He was already thoroughly accustomed to this routine. Whenever they ran out of something, he just told Karl to go find it. This time was no exception.

"Y-yes, right away," Karl nodded, a decisive glint in his eyes. He had made up his mind to abandon Santner. He would no longer seek the Divine Heavenly Kingdom with him.

"Go quickly, I’m hungry," Santner nodded in satisfaction and closed his eyes again. He never suspected that Karl would run away. After all, the temptation of the Divine Heavenly Kingdom and immortality was so great.

Taking the only knight’s longsword they possessed, Karl dragged his tired body, cast one last glance at Santner, and walked out with absolute resolve.

Tap, tap, tap...

The sky had gradually grown dark. Karl was still terrified inside; after all, no one knew if the giant beast would suddenly appear.

Karl carefully left the cave. After several minutes had passed without the giant beast appearing, he secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

"Take care of yourself. I’ve served you for so many years; you should be satisfied," Karl muttered inwardly. His ears perked up, and his eyes warily scanned his surroundings.

Choosing a direction, he began to run outward with reckless abandon, desperate to get far away from this area.

Tap, tap, tap... As he ran, the sky turned pitch black. There was no moonlight tonight; the moon was completely obscured by dark clouds.

"Damn it, why is there no moon tonight?" Karl slowly came to a halt. The surroundings were deathly quiet and incredibly dark. Only the chirping of insects and the distant roars of beasts could be heard. He was starting to lose his sense of direction.

He began to regret his choice. He shouldn’t have chosen to leave at night. Now, he didn’t even know which way to go.

"I came out from here just now. If I keep walking in this direction, I should be able to get out."

Karl thought for a moment, then stepped forward. He had to be extremely careful with every step. He held the longsword in front of him, stabbing it forcefully into the dark with every step he took.

"I should be far away from that valley by now," Karl calculated the distance, feeling a wave of relief in his heart.

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh...

Suddenly, Karl seemed to hear a strange sound, causing his brow to furrow.

He paused his footsteps for a moment before continuing forward. One step, two steps... Nothing happened. His elevated heart rate slowly settled down.

Tap, tap, tap...

He took a few more steps forward. His longsword seemed to poke into something. The texture was quite hard. He forcefully poked it a few more times. He could feel that this object was massive, entirely blocking his path.

"What is this?" Karl frowned and slowly reached his hand forward to feel it.

It was freezing cold and covered in bumps and ridges. And... it seemed to be moving.

"It’s moving?" Karl’s face drained of color, and his entire body began to tremble. He turned around, preparing to bolt.

But the very next second, a deafening roar exploded right next to his ear. Karl’s mind went completely blank. He knew exactly what it was. This was undeniably the giant beast, which had been sleeping.

A bitter taste filled his mouth. He never expected to deliver himself straight into the net. As he wandered in the dark, he had actually walked straight back into the valley and bumped right into the giant beast.

He regretted it so much. If he had known, he would have just stayed in the cave. But now, it was too late for anything.

"Ah..."

A miserable scream suddenly tore through the night, only to be abruptly cut off.
