Chapter 36: Chapter 18: Slaughter, The History of the Zombie Race! (Part 2)

By now, the horizon had turned a pale, fish-belly white. The morning sun was about to break through the clouds, gilding the dark earth with a touch of gold.

Alex placed Bourne’s severed head on an exposed rock and asked expressionlessly, "Tell me, why did this world turn out like this?"

"Huh... what do you mean?" Bourne looked a bit bewildered. His eyes darted around, clearly failing to understand the meaning behind Alex’s words.

Alex thought for a moment and rephrased his question. "Tell me about the history of your race. For example, the God King Arthur you mentioned—is he the source of all intelligent zombies?"

Everything had a cause. Although the Darkseekers of the I Am Legend world were strong, it was absolutely impossible for them to develop this rapidly. He suspected a Fallen Reincarnator was definitely interfering behind the scenes. Finding the first intelligent zombie might just provide the clue he needed.

"The history of our race?" Bourne suddenly realized what he meant and hurriedly began to recount the tale without pause.

"Years ago, the world underwent a sudden mutation, and the Divine Race began to appear in massive numbers. The first batch of the Divine Race was converted from humans..."

"These members of the Divine Race were also known as Primitives. They were hideous in appearance and possessed low intelligence, driven mostly by pure instinct..."

"Later, the King of the Divine Race—God King Arthur—appeared! He led the Primitives to defeat humanity, establishing a glorious foundation and creating the Divine Empire. A short-lived race like humans, with their frail bodies, were simply no match for us..."

Reaching this point, Bourne suddenly realized his slip of the tongue and hastily tried to salvage the situation. "Except for you, of course, In my eyes, your strength is already on par with God King Arthur!"

Alex remained expressionless, stating flatly, "Continue."

"Oh, right!" Bourne hurriedly went on. "Later, the Divine Race flourished, pioneering a brilliant biological civilization. You see those spider webs on the trees in the distance? They are actually our surveillance cameras... We even mimicked the human internet to construct a Divine Network..."

He talked a blue streak for nearly an hour. Most of it was just flattering the Divine Race on how powerful and tenacious they were; only a small fraction of the information was actually useful.

Finally, he carefully advised, "I see that you are still human, meaning your lifespan is short. Why not convert into the Divine Race? You would possess eternal life."

Alex raised an eyebrow. "You guys can actually convert normal humans into zombies?"

"Yes, but I cannot do it. It requires the God King to bestow his divine blood." Bourne hurriedly expressed his loyalty. "I absolutely won’t hold a grudge about what happened here. For a warrior as powerful as you to join the Divine Race would be our absolute honor!"

"Where can I find this God King Arthur you speak of?"

"Well... I’m not too sure about that either." Bourne’s eyes darted around erratically. "The Ancestor hasn’t appeared in a very long time. Some say he has ascended to the Divine Kingdom to become a Supreme God, while others say he is slumbering, awaiting his next evolutionary advancement..."

"In other words, you have no idea where he is?" Alex’s voice remained flat, yet it sent a chill straight to Bourne’s core.

Bourne instantly sensed that things were taking a bad turn. He desperately racked his brains to prove his worth. "Wait a minute, I have a way! Just give me some time, and I can definitely help you find him!"

"There’s no need. I have a better idea."

Alex tore the human-bone crown from Bourne’s head and casually tossed it onto the ground. He then found an iron chain and a wooden stake, mounted Bourne’s head at the very top, and firmly planted the stake high on the summit of the hill.

By now, the sky was growing light. The morning dawn pierced through the clouds, gilding the dense forest with a golden trim. Those sunlight-hating zombies had long since hidden away in their burrows. Only a single ray of sunlight broke through the gloom, generously scattering its energy across the earth.

Watching the approaching sunlight, Bourne instantly panicked.

The most cruel punishment among the zombie race was to expose their own kind to the sun, letting them burn alive.
