Chapter 1024: Start of the Joint Chūnin Promotion Exams

Third Training Ground, Konohagakure

After an afternoon of special training, Sasuke and Mika found themselves so exhausted that standing upright became a challenge. Even the typically energetic Naruto was visibly fatigued, his breaths coming heavily as his chest rose and fell like a bellows.

Observing their condition, Kakashi announced, “Alright, today’s special training comes to an end here. Let’s head back and get some rest!”

‘Phew, it’s finally over!’ all three Genins couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief.

At this time, Kakashi spoke again: “Naruto and Mika-chan, the two of you may leave… Sasuke, stay here!”

Naruto pouted and voiced out his complaint, “Kakashi-sensei is showing favoritism toward Sasuke!” He also wanted to hear what Kakashi wanted to talk about with Sasuke.

Feeling troubled, Kakashi gave a signal to Mika. The girl immediately understood Kakashi’s meaning, and spoke to Naruto, “Naruto-kun, Oba-san gave me a few special discount coups that will expire very soon, let’s go eat ramen at Ichiraku so that these coupons don’t go to waste!”

Getting special discount coupons at Ichiraku Ramen is not that difficult for Mika since her aunt, Shimizu Naomi, ‘works’ at the Ichiraku Ramen Stall when she is not carrying out Anbu duties.

Naruto quickly agreed, “Okay~” and spoke to Kakashi and Sasuke, “I will see you guys later…”

Kakashi smiled gratefully toward Mika who nodded lightly, and then left with Naruto.

Once Mika and Naruto left, Kakashi spoke to Sasuke, “You should have noticed that thing about Raijin, right?”

Sasuke frowned, “What do you mean Kakashi-sensei?” For a moment, he wondered whether Kakashi had also noticed that Raijin seemed to possess the Sharingan of the Uchiha Clan. He hadn’t talked about this piece of information with anyone else because he was not certain about his guess either. Currently, it’s just a doubt, and he needs to confirm his guess before mentioning it to Kakashi or his elder brother.

But it seems he had guessed wrong, Kakashi wasn’t talking about what he thought, and answered, “The way Raijin uses the Lightning Chakra Cloak…”

After a moment of silence, Sasuke nodded calmly, “Yes, he seems to have mastery over the Lightning Chakra Stimulation Method… and his technique is more advanced compared to the one you taught me, Kakashi-sensei.”

Although he answered Kakashi’s question calmly, Sasuke’s heart was restless at the moment. For one, he wasn’t happy with his performance against Raijin, he suffered a crushing defeat, and he did not like that. He had promised his father to redeem the Uchiha name during the Joint Chūnin Promotion Exam, and also find a way to extract information about his father’s Sharingan from Deidara, but then he went and humiliated himself against a no-name Amegakure ninja! This naturally made him feel extremely dissatisfied with his performance.

Perhaps Kakashi noticed the restlessness in Sasuke’s heart, and spoke in a deep voice, “This Amegakure ninja… he is definitely not an ordinary Genin… no, perhaps the entire Amegakure squad is not ordinary… if you encounter him during the Chūnin Promotion Exam, it’s best to avoid them…”

Sasuke frowned, “What?”

Kakashi added, “Although I am not certain yet, and this is only a gut feeling, just trust my judgment on this… This Amegakure squad is anything but simple!”

“Kakashi-sensei… you seem to be misunderstanding something… I do not care about such things… I have my own objectives, and I would complete them at any cost!” answered Sasuke coldly, and added, “Whether it’s Deidara, Kimimaro, or this Amegakure… I refuse to cower or admit defeat!”

Kakashi questioned with a frown, “What if you end up dying?”

“Then so be it!” answered Sasuke without a shred of hesitation.

Kakashi sighed, “I see…” and asked another question, “And what if your selfishness impacts both Naruto and Mika-chan?”

Sasuke couldn’t answer, “That is…!” He had no answer.

Kakashi nodded with a smile, “Do not let your emotions get the better of you…!”

Sasuke looked down with a complicated expression.

In the blink of an eye, two days passed, and the Joint Chūnin Promotion Exam officially started.

In the past two days, a lot of things occurred. Because Raijin and Tengu did not shy away from openly provoking ninjas from other shinobi villages, the tension of the Joint Chūnin Promotion Exam had increased a lot and many ninjas had even engaged in fierce fights causing headaches to the members of the Konoha Military Police Force.

Among them, the most significant commotion arose from the skirmish between the Kusagakure ninjas and the Yugakure Ninjas, alongside the minor disputes involving Iwagakure ninjas, Kumogakure ninjas, Sunagakure ninjas, Konohagakure ninjas, and Kirigakure ninjas.

Eventually, tensions escalated and reached the ears of the Konoha Elders, but they were a bit helpless and could only reinforce the security of the village.

Simultaneously, Konoha Village buzzed with various gossip and bizarre rumors. As these stories, both true and false, continued to spread and ferment, the odds in the casino fluctuated accordingly. The most notable shift came with Amegakure represented by the formidable Raijin.

After having swiftly defeated three Konoha Anbu previously and one-sidedly suppressing the strongest Genin squad from Konoha, the Amegakure led by Raijin emerged as a top contender in the Joint Chūnin Promotion Exam, rivaling the likes of Iwagakure squad led by Deidara, Kumogakure squad led by Darui, and Sunagakure squad led by Temari!

As Raijin, Samsara, and Tengu made their way to the first exam venue, they attracted hostile glares from numerous Konoha ninjas along the path, as if the three of them were the true villains who needed to be put down. However, the three remained unperturbed, dismissing these reactions as inconsequential in pursuit of their ultimate objective.

The first exam is held at the Ninja School, mirroring the format of the Chunin exam from the Canon. It consists of a written test designed to assess the ninjas’ observational skills and intelligence-gathering abilities.

There was a total of six examination rooms, each accommodating sixty candidates. Raijin’s team was assigned to the first examination room, and he went toward his seat with confidence, showing no signs of worry.

Samsara on the other hand glanced around nervously, then turned to Raijin, asking, “Raijin-sama, do you think the test paper will be difficult?”

Raijin shrugged, remarking, “I did not involve myself in drafting the test paper, I had left that responsibility to Itachi, so I couldn’t say whether it would be difficult or easy.”

Samsara’s anxiety heightened. “But… what if I fail?”

Tengu shared the same concern. While failure was acceptable to him personally, it could jeopardize Raijin’s plan, a consequence he wished to avoid.

Raijin shook his head, and smiled reassuringly, “Don’t worry… am I not here?” He wasn’t worried about the Written Test Exam. No matter how difficult, it should be possible for him–the Hokage–to pass the exam with his knowledge base. If he–the Hokage–can’t answer those questions, then no Genin will ever be able to answer those questions.

Both Tengu and Samsara nodded, “Alright…”

“Besides, the purpose of this exam is not to test knowledge… The purpose of the Written Exam is to test a ninja’s observational skills and intelligence-gathering abilities.”
