Chapter 54: Chapter 54: An Anger Older Than Time

The headmaster’s footsteps rang off the chamber walls, unhurried, each one swallowed by the dark and thrown back twice as loud. The cavern was enormous vaulted stone stretching up into shadow, air so cold it burned the lungs but somehow his steps still felt like the only sound in the world.

Theon didn’t move.

Head down. Hands loose at his sides. To anyone watching, he might have looked like a boy bracing for a scolding.

But He wasn’t.

Something was turning over inside him, slow and heavy, like a stone rolling off a grave. Not the flash of temper he’d felt a hundred times before. This was older. It sat in his chest like it had been buried there for five thousand years, waiting for someone to finally dig it up.

He lifted his head.

Crystal-blue eyes locked onto the headmaster, and his voice came out flat, stripped of anything a ten-year-old’s voice should carry.

"Five thousand years." A pause. "You sealed her down here. With a fragment of that sword for five thousand years."

The headmaster stopped walking. His face didn’t change.

"And why," he said, "should that concern you?" He took one more step. "I’d suggest you leave. Before this gets messy."

Theon’s head tilted, slowly, almost lazy. A smile crossed his face thin, and nothing like a child’s.

"Messy." He let the word sit there. "Yeah."

The smile vanished.

"Very messy."

The headmaster’s eyes narrowed. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Lyra couldn’t stop staring. That was Theon’s face, Theon’s voice and yet everything about it was wrong, wrong in a way she couldn’t name, like a familiar room rearranged in the dark.

Ifrith felt it before he understood it. His small body locked up, every muscle rigid.

"Theon." His voice came out smaller than he meant it to. "Calm down."

Theon turned his head toward him as Their eyes met.

And for the first time since Ifrith had known him, something in the primordial demon’s chest went cold with actual fear. He couldn’t move. Every instinct he had was screaming the same thing.

*That isn’t Theon. Not all of him.*

Eiralyth saw it too. She’d been watching the aura bleeding off him, and now her breath caught somewhere in her throat. It wasn’t his aura. Not only his. Something else was riding underneath it, something ancient, something soaked in rage that had been fermenting for longer than any of them had been alive.

"I understand now." Her head snapped toward the headmaster. "Leave."

He frowned. "What?"

"Leave. Now." Her voice cracked like a whip. "Don’t provoke him again."

"You want me," the headmaster said slowly, "to run from a ten-year-old."

"Do you really think," Eiralyth shot back, "a ten-year-old wouldn’t speak to an adult like *that*?"

The headmaster froze. For once, he actually looked... really looked at the boy in front of him. And the cold in those eyes wasn’t a child’s anger. It was the anger of something that had been waiting far, far too long.

Frost crept out from beneath Theon’s feet, spreading in a thin white sheet across the stone. Mist rolled off his shoulders like breath from something much larger than a boy.

The headmaster’s jaw tightened. "He’s ten years old." He said it like he was reminding himself. "I can handle this."

Ifrith’s ears dropped flat against his skull.

"You have no idea what you’re doing."

Theon’s head turned toward him.

"Silence."

One words. That was all he said. But the pressure that came with them slammed into the room like a wall falling, and Ifrith’s whole body locked in place. Eiralyth couldn’t speak either. It wasn’t fear of being hurt it was the kind of pressure that made breathing feel like a decision you had to make on purpose.

Fen didn’t wait to find out what came next. The little creature bolted from theon’s shadow and didn’t stop until it was thirty feet away.

The headmaster raised a hand.

"Enough." Whatever warmth had been in his face was gone now. "I’ll teach you to your place."

He drifted backward through the air, ice already gathering around his fingers like frost creeping up a window.

"Ancient Ice Magic."

A circle bloomed above Theon’s head, wide as the chamber itself, glyphs turning slow and blue-white.

"Ice Javelin."

Thousands of spears condensed out of the air inside the circle and then the whole sky of ice dropped at once.

"THEON!" Lazaria’s scream tore through the noise.

The attack hit like a landslide. The cavern floor cracked under the impact, ice and stone bursting outward in a white cloud that rolled across the chamber and swallowed him whole.

The headmaster laughed, shielding his eyes with one hand.

"I doubt you’ve ever seen real ancient magic." His voice carried over the settling dust. "Enjoy the taste before you die little prince."

The frost settled in as silence dropped over the cavern like a held breath.

Then something moved inside the white.

Theon stepped out of the mist without a scratch on him. He raised one hand, almost bored, and waved it and the frost clinging to his skin scattered like it had never touched him at all.

The headmaster’s laughter died in his throat.

"What!!..

"You thought that was ancient magic?" Theon’s voice was quiet. Emptied of anything. "You thought that could actually harm me?"

Something shifted in the headmaster’s expression the beginning of understanding, arriving a second too late to matter.

Theon lifted his hand. A circle far larger than the last one opened above the headmaster’s head, glyphs spinning fast enough to blur.

"Ice Slams."

The chamber shuddered. Massive spikes tore down out of the circle in a storm, and the headmaster moved dodging the first, the second, the third, twisting through the air with the ease of something that had survived worse. But the ice adjusted with him, hunting, and no matter which way he turned another wave was already falling to meet him.

One spike caught his shoulder.

"*Agh!*"

He screamed and then hit the ground hard enough to crater the stone. Before he could push himself up, the circle was still overhead, patient, another wave already gathering.

He slammed a palm flat against the floor.

"Ancient Ice Wall!"

A slab of ice tore up out of the ground, thick as a fortress gate. The falling spikes crashed against it in a roar that shook dust from the ceiling and the wall held, groaning, but held.

The headmaster smiled through the strain. "Foolish kid."

Theon stretched out one hand.

"Dispel."

The wall didn’t shatter so much as unmake itself, crumbling into glittering fragments that rained down over the cavern floor.

The headmaster’s smile disappeared with it.

"What," he said, quieter now, "*are* you?"

Theon’s eyes opened wider and the color in them deepened, crystal blue turning almost luminous in the dark.

The headmaster stared into them and went pale.

"I know those eyes." His voice shook, just slightly. "Those are" He stopped himself, staring at Theon like a man who’d just seen a dead man walk into the room. "They’re *his*."

Lyra turned toward him, breathless. "What do you mean?"

He didn’t answer. Instead he moved, fast, circling the chamber’s edges not fleeing, Theon realized, but working. Small circles were flaring to life against the cavern walls one after another, glyphs catching like sparks jumping from ember to ember, until the ancient carvings ringing the room lit up in a slow, deliberate pattern.

He was buying time. Building something.

He came to a stop at the chamber’s center and raised both hands as the last of Theon’s ice bore down on him. He didn’t dodge this time he simply spread his arms, and the attack folded into a barrier of light and vanished, swallowed whole.

The mist around him thinned.

Then his body began to change.

His skin lightened, smoothed. His ears drew out into long points. His hair lengthened, silvering at the roots, and the air around him thickened with a presence that hadn’t been there a moment before old, patient and vast.

The headmaster was gone. What stood there now was something else entirely.

Lyra’s eyes went wide. And Leon stared like the floor had dropped out from under him.

"Ancient elves." His voice barely carried. "They went extinct thousands of years ago."

The elf smiled, but there was nothing kind in it.

"Is that what you were told?" He looked at Leon like he pitied him. "You think something that lives for a million years just disappears overnight?"

"During the primordial wars," Leon said, tightening his grip on his sword, "it’s said the Frost primordial wiped your people out."

"You’re mistaken boy because It was the other way round."

While they talked, the cold around Theon kept dropping. Colder. Colder still, until the air itself seemed to seize up and go brittle.

Then he was simply gone.

"Shadow Leap."

He reappeared behind the elf and drove his heel into his spine.

*BOOM.*

The elf slammed face-first into the stone. Before he could push up, Theon already had a circle open above him.

"Ice Lance."

A spear of ice screamed downward. The elf rolled clear a half-second before it struck, and the floor where he’d been detonated into a crater, chunks of stone raining across the chamber.

He rose slowly, wiping blood from the corner of his mouth, and studied Theon with something that had stopped being amusement.

"You really are strong, boy." His eyes sharpened. "But not strong enough. Not against something as ancient as me."

He raised both hands.

"Ice Pillars!"

The ground tore open. Columns of ice erupted on every side of Theon at once, and he moved Shadow Leap, again and again, weaving between pillars that kept rising a half-step ahead of where he needed to be. One. Two. Three. He was fast enough for most of it.

But Not all of it.

One pillar clipped his side.

"*Ugh—!*"

And he was thrown across the cavern and hit the ground rolling, the air punched clean out of his lungs. For a few seconds he couldn’t do anything but lie there, chest heaving, his ten years old body, no matter what else lived inside it simply refusing to obey him.

The elf started walking toward him, unhurried.

Ifrith broke first.

"Master!" He surged forward, flame roaring off his small frame, Fen right beside him. And Eiralyth moved a heartbeat later, magic already gathering in her hands.

Their attacks converged on the elf in a wave of fire and force.

He waved a hand, almost gently, and all of it simply stopped existing and was slammed towards a wall in the cave.

Ifrith’s eyes went wide. "Impossible"

The elf kept walking.

That was when Leon moved.

His hand found the hilt at his hip and the blade was out before anyone saw him draw it. He closed the distance in a blur and cut a real cut, drawing a thin line of blood across the elf’s arm.

The elf looked down at the wound. Then up at Leon.

"What are you?"

Leon said nothing as the elf lifted one hand.

"Dominance."

The pressure that rolled off him hit like a collapsing ceiling. Leon’s knees buckled under it, his sword driving into the stone just to keep himself upright, his whole body screaming in protest.

The elf didn’t so much as glance at him again. He kept walking toward Theon.

Lyra tried to move, tried to reach for the power sleeping inside her, and felt it slip through her fingers like water. The Flame Empress wouldn’t wake. Not fast enough.

The elf ignored all of them. His eyes stayed on the boy on the ground.

"You have his eyes." His voice dropped, quiet now, almost reverent. "Five thousand years ago." A pause. "So you really did come back."

Leon’s head jerked up. "What *are* you, human?"

Theon tried to push himself up onto one arm. He didn’t make it in time.

The elf reached him first and set a foot against his back. Then pressed down.

Hard.

Straight onto the wound.

Theon’s teeth clenched, a strangled sound tearing out of him before he could stop it.

"*AHHH!*"

The scream ripped through the cavern and every single person in it went still. The silence afterward was worse than the sound had been.

The elf looked down at him, almost curious.

Then the air changed.

Theon’s aura didn’t build this time. It detonated... frost exploding outward from his body in a shockwave that cracked the stone beneath him and sent the elf staggering back, his eyes suddenly, filled, with fear.

Theon rose.

Slow. Head down, shoulders trembling with something that wasn’t weakness. Then his face lifted, and his eyes weren’t cold anymore. They were burning, in a way frost shouldn’t be able to burn.

His voice, when it came which didn’t belong to a child at all.

"You monster."

The elf went rigid.

"You vile" Theon’s aura tore loose around him, as ice screamed across the floor in every direction." *Evil* Ancient elf."

The cavern itself seemed to flinch.

"How *could* you.." His voice cracked, not from weakness but from something far older than grief. "....do that to your own daughter?"

Silence swallowed the chamber whole.

As Ifrith’s eyes were wide as saucers. Lazaria stood frozen where she was. Lyra stared at Theon like she was looking at a stranger wearing his face.

"What...?"

Leon lifted his head slowly, and something in his expression had already changed... recognition, dread, and beneath it, the faintest edge of something like relief.

"Finally," he said quietly. "You’re finally back."
