Chapter 55: Chapter 55: NIVARETH Returns

The elf mouth hung open.

He didn’t move. Didn’t blink. For a long moment he just stood there staring at Theon like the ground beneath thousands of years of certainty had cracked open under his feet.

"How.." His voice came out thin, nothing like the voice that had mocked a "ten-year-old child" minutes ago. "How do you know that?"

Theon said nothing.

The elf’s face twisted, fear curdling fast into anger.

"Who *are* you?" The words cracked out of him, louder now. "Name yourself, demon!"

Theon lifted his head. A cold, thin smile crossed his face not a child’s smile at all.

"You already said it." A beat Gbum. "When you said *he’d* finally reincarnated."

The color drained out of the elf’s face in an instant.

"Impossible." He stumbled back a step, like the word alone could hold Theon off. "That’s.. that’s impossible. He was human. Just a human."

"You forgot something." The air around Theon shuddered, and frost climbed the walls a little faster. "I was on the verge of becoming a demi-god."

The elf’s jaw clenched. And for the first time since he’d walked into this chamber, real fear broke through.. raw, undisguised.

"No." His eyes flicked past Theon, toward the tunnel behind them, toward anywhere that wasn’t here. "No, I need to get out."

He turned to run.

Theon raised one hand, and a dome of translucent frost tore up out of the ground around them both, sealing the space in an instant — a battlefield built and closed in the span of a breath. Outside, Lyra slammed into it and bounced back, palms pressed flat against the ice.

The others were locked out. Nothing inside could reach them. Nothing outside could reach in.

The elf froze mid-step, staring at the wall of frost now surrounding him.

"You’re not going anywhere," Theon said.

Slowly, the elf turned back around. Theon stood a few meters off, and the calm on his face was somehow worse than rage would have been.

"You can’t touch me." The elf’s voice shook even as he said it. "You know that."

Theon took a step forward. Then another.

"You raised a hand against my sister." His eyes flicked, just briefly, to Lyra’s shape pressed against the barrier outside. "You put your hands on my friends." His gaze came back, flat and unblinking. "And you drained the life out of your own daughter to keep yourself breathing."

"That was necessary." The elf’s voice hardened in defense.

Theon stopped walking.

"That," the elf said, colder now, "was what the situation required."

"She was your *daughter*."

"So?" The word rang off the stone. The elf laughed, short and bitter. "You think elves love the way humans do? Weak little creatures who let feeling steer every choices they make?" His eyes narrowed. "That’s exactly why your kind stays weak. Emotion drags you down every single time."

Theon’s hands curled into fists at his sides.

"She was a sacrifice," the elf said. "Nothing more."

Theon looked at him for a long moment.

"She used to call you the most loving father in the world."

Something flickered across the elf’s face.... there and gone, fast, but Theon caught it. A crack. A memory clawing up from somewhere he’d buried it a long time ago.

"Stop."

"Did you know that?"

"Stop talking."

"She *trusted* you."

"*STOP!*"

The elf’s hand shot out.

"Ice Lance!"

The chamber erupted. Dozens of spears tore out of the air toward Theon in a single screaming wave and he didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. The first one hit an invisible skin of frost around his body and shattered on contact. The second did the same. The third. The fourth. One after another the spears broke apart a hair’s width from his skin, like the air itself had turned to armor.

The elf’s face twisted. "Ice Javelin!"

A spear the size of a tree trunk formed above him and screamed downward. Theon lifted one hand almost lazily, and it simply stopped... hovering a finger’s width from his face, ice groaning under pressure it couldn’t survive.

For a heartbeat, neither of them breathed.

Theon closed his fist.

*CRACK.*

The javelin came apart in midair.

"Ice Wall! Ice Knives! Ice Strike!" The spells came one after another now, frantic, the elf’s voice rising with each one, magic pouring out of him until the whole chamber was a blur of white and blue.

Theon walked through all of it.

Not rushing. Not flinching. Just walking, step after unhurried step, while every attack the elf could throw broke apart before it ever touched him.

"No." The elf’s breathing had gone ragged. "You can’t."

Another spell. Nothing.

Another. Nothing.

He stumbled backward and went down hard, hands scraping against the stone, and he dragged himself away on instinct before his palm hit something solid behind him... the barrier. He hit it again, harder.

"Let me *out!*"

Nothing answered him but silence, and Theon’s footsteps closing the distance.

He stopped a few feet away. The elf looked up at him, and Theon tilted his head, just slightly, his eyes glowing crystal-blue in the dark.

"You’re not going anywhere."

And then the fear on the elf’s face simply vanished, replaced by something worse... on a smile.

"You finally stepped into it."

Theon’s brow furrowed. "What?"

A circle ignited beneath his own feet.

His eyes dropped to it. His expression changed.

"Wait..."

*BOOM.*

Flame tore up from the ground and swallowed him whole, the force of it hurling him backward through the air. The frost barrier shattered like glass around the blast, and Theon’s body slammed into the far wall hard enough to crack the stone.

A pillar broke loose above the impact site and It came down on top of him.

"*THEON!*" Lyra’s scream tore through the chamber.

Lazaria’s stomach dropped out from under her. Ifrith’s pupils shrank to pinpricks. Leon’s hand was already on his sword before he’d finished processing what he’d seen. Fen snarled, low and vicious. Eiralyth jaw locked tight.

They moved together, no hesitation, no plan just five people throwing everything they had at the thing that had just buried a child under a mountain of stone. Fire. Shadow. Steel wreathed in force. Magic layered on magic, converging on the elf from every direction at once.

He barely moved.

A pulse of pressure rolled off him and every attack that reached him simply came apart, absorbed, extinguished.

Ifrith didn’t stop. He forced himself forward through the pressure alone, flame wrapping his fists white-hot, and swung.

Once.

Twice.

A third time.. and this one connected. The elf’s head snapped to the side.

He turned back slowly, and there was nothing amused in his face now.

"*You.*"

Ifrith grinned through gritted teeth, breathing hard. "Got you."

The elf’s aura detonated outward.

"*ENOUGH!*"

The pressure hit like a collapsing building. Ifrith’s knees buckled and slammed into the stone. Leon was driven down beside him, teeth clenched against a weight he couldn’t fight. Lazeria’s lungs seized, no air reaching them no matter how hard she tried. Lyra screamed as the force pinned her flat against the wall. Even Iris, jaw set, eyes wide, felt her vision start to gray at the edges.

The elf lifted one hand and swept it sideways.

The wave of force picked all five of them up and threw them across the chamber. They struck the far wall together, and the stone cracked beneath the impact.

He turned toward the rubble where Theon had gone down.

"You’re finally dead." His breathing came hard, his robes torn, blood tracking down one side of his face but he was smiling, wide and genuine. "I finally did it." His voice softened, almost reverent. "After all these years."

He turned away from them, done, already moving on.

"Now time to finish this."

Then he stopped.

A thin line of blue light had appeared behind him.

And his smile died.

The rubble over Theon’s body was glowing. Light bled up through the cracks between the stones... one seam, then another, then a dozen, brightening by the second until the whole pile burned like something had swallowed a star.

The elf turned, slow, dread written across every line of his face.

"What!.."

*BOOM.*

The rubble detonated outward in a shockwave that rocked the entire chamber. Dust sheeted down from the ceiling. The walls groaned under a tremor that didn’t stop at the walls... it kept going, racing down through the bedrock, under the academy’s foundations, out past its walls, spreading through the earth itself like something enormous had just woken up.

Miles away, in the capital, the tremor reached the Imperial Palace.

Inside the throne room, Emperor Ragnar sat alone, a glass of water resting on the arm of his chair. The surface trembled once. Then again. Then the whole glass shivered against the wood.

Ragnar’s eyes opened.

He looked at the water for a long moment. Then, slowly, a smile spread across his face.

"It’s already time." He leaned back into his chair, unhurried, like he’d been waiting for this moment for a very long time. "He’s finally back."

Deep beneath the academy, the light kept building.

Theon rose out of the rubble, weightless, his body drifting upward as his clothes stirred in a wind that wasn’t there. The temperature collapsed around him.. frost spreading across every surface in the chamber, walls, floor, even the air itself starting to feel brittle and sharp to breathe.

Something shifted inside his storage ring.

The Eternal Frost Blade tore free of it and shot into the air above him, its ancient edge burning with a light so blue it hurt to look at.

Across the chamber, buried deep in a wall of eternal ice, the other half of the sword answered. The ice around it began to shudder.

Once.

Twice.

*BOOM.*

The second fragment ripped free, and both halves of the blade shot toward each other through the air.

The elf stared, frozen. "No-"

They met in the center of the chamber.

For one full second, everything went silent — no wind, no falling dust, nothing.

Then the fragments fused in a flash of blue that swallowed the entire cavern, and when it faded, the sword hanging in the air was whole. Longer than either half had been. Sharper. Complete in a way it hadn’t been for five thousand years. The aura pouring off it pressed down on everyone still conscious in the room like a hand around the throat.

The elf staggered back a step, disbelief written across every feature.

"No."

The sword drifted toward Theon and stopped in front of him, waiting.

He reached out and closed his hand around the hilt.

The instant his fingers met the metal..

*BOOM.*

Frost exploded outward from him in a ring, and his eyes opened.. crystal blue, radiant, ancient in a way no ten-year-old’s eyes had any right to be.

For the first time, the elf looking back at him didn’t see a child.

He saw the thing he’d spent five thousand years preventing.

Theon’s grip tightened around the Eternal Frost Blade, and it hummed in his hand... not loud, not dramatic, just a low, resonant note that everyone in the chamber felt in their chest whether they wanted to or not.

The elf took a step back.

Theon lowered the blade until its tip nearly touched the frozen ground, his eyes locked on the ancient elf across from him. Nothing childish remained in them. No hesitation. No fear.

Just cold, absolute certainty.

"I will destroy you."

The elf’s face went still as the cavern held its breath.

And the Eternal Frost Blade gleamed in the dark, like it was waiting for something.
