Reborn as The Seventh Prince of Eternal Winter
Chapter 53: Return of the child of prophecy
Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Return of the child of prophecy
Theon and his group soon arrived at an open space in within the cave after a long hours of getting lost and finding the right path.
The cavern was enormous, its ceiling lost somewhere in a darkness the blue light couldn’t quite reach.
Motes of that light drifted through the air like frozen stars, scattered across the cavern in slow, weightless arcs that illuminated ancient pillars rising from the stone floor. Faded runes wound around each column, their edges worn soft by five thousand years of silence, telling a story that only fragments of meaning still clung to.
The air itself felt wrong somehow, thin and impossibly cold, cold enough that every breath Theon drew came out as visible mist, hanging in front of his face before dissolving into the dark.
He took a slow step forward, boots crunching against a thin crust of frost that hadn’t been there a moment before.
Inside his storage ring, the Eternal Frostblade trembled violently, the sensation crawling up his arm like something alive clawing to get free.
Not with anger.
With longing, raw and desperate, the kind of ache that came from waiting far too long for something just out of reach.
Lyra drifted closer to him, close enough that her shoulder brushed his arm, her voice dropping to barely above a whisper.
"This place feels wrong."
Lazeria nodded without speaking, her hands clasped so tightly together that her knuckles had gone pale, eyes darting from pillar to pillar as though something might step out from behind one of them at any moment.
Leon’s gaze swept across the cavern in slow, methodical passes, cataloguing exits, shadows, anything that might pose a threat, his usual unreadable calm sharpened now into something closer to alertness.
Ifrith remained rigid on Theon’s shoulder, every muscle in his small frame coiled tight, tails held stiff and still instead of their usual restless motion.
Eiralyth’s expression had gone completely unreadable, crimson eyes fixed on something ahead of them that made even her ancient composure falter.
Then they saw her.
High above the center of the cavern, suspended in the empty air with nothing beneath her but darkness, a young woman hung motionless. Silver hair drifted around her in slow, weightless waves, catching the blue light and scattering it like moonlight caught in still water.
Chains of ice and light wound around her wrists, her ankles, and her waist, binding her in place against gravity itself, glowing faintly with a power that had clearly not weakened in all the millennium since it was first cast.
Her eyes were closed, lashes resting against pale cheeks, expression peaceful in a way that felt deeply out of place given everything Eiralyth had told them.
Not dead.
Waiting. The word settled over Theon with a chill that had nothing to do with the cavern’s cold.
Lyra’s voice came out hushed, almost reverent.
"She’s... still alive?"
Eiralyth nodded slowly, her gaze never leaving the suspended figure.
"Yes."
Below the woman, embedded deep into a pedestal carved from black stone, rested a sword.
its blade buried halfway down its length, the exposed edge jagged and dark despite the faint blue glow still pulsing along what remained of it.
The remaining Half of the Eternal Frostblade.
The moment Theon’s eyes landed on it, the fragment in his ring reacted violently.
A surge of freezing mana tore through his body without warning, starting in his hand and racing up through his arm, his shoulder, his chest, until his entire body felt like it had been plunged into a frozen river.
**Crack.**
Frost spread outward across the stone floor beneath his boots in jagged, branching lines, spiraling out in every direction like ice creeping across a windowpane.
The storage ring shook so hard against his hip that he could feel it through the fabric of his clothes.
Lyra stumbled back a step, alarm flashing across her face.
"Big Brother!"
Lazeria’s eyes went wide, one hand flying up as though to shield herself from something. "The sword!"
Theon clamped both hands around the ring, gritting his teeth as he poured mana into it, trying to smother whatever was clawing to break free from within.
Inside the ring, the Frostblade fought back like something with a mind entirely its own, straining against his control with a desperation that felt almost human.
It wanted to escape.
It wanted to return to the other half of itself, to close a distance that had stretched across five thousand years of separation, and no amount of restraint Theon threw at it seemed able to fully silence that want.
Ifrith’s dark-crimson eyes narrowed to thin slits, his voice sharp and urgent.
"Not yet."
Theon looked at him, jaw clenched against the cold burning through his hand.
The demon shook his head firmly, tails lashing once behind him.
"If it comes out now, it will be too soon."
Theon forced more mana into the ring, pushing until sweat beaded at his temple despite the freezing air around them. Slowly, gradually, the violent trembling weakened, the pull easing back from something desperate to something merely insistent.
But it did not stop entirely.
The sword was still waiting, still reaching, patient in the way only something ancient could afford to be.
A calm, measured voice rolled through the cavern, carrying easily across the distance despite its quiet tone.
"You children truly do not know what you are tampering with."
Every head in the group turned at once.
The headmaster stood at the cavern’s entrance, framed by the tunnel behind him, his silver robes stirring faintly around blue mana that drifted off him like smoke rising from embers. His piercing eyes moved deliberately across the scene before him first to Theon, then to the chained woman suspended overhead, and finally down to the broken sword resting in its pedestal.
The atmosphere in the cavern shifted the instant his gaze settled back on Theon, thickening with a tension that pressed against every one of them like a physical weight.
Theon stepped forward without thinking, anger flaring hot and sudden across his face, burning away whatever caution he might otherwise have exercised.
"We know exactly what we are tampering with, you monster!"
His voice cracked against the cavern walls, echoing back at him from every direction at once.
"You evil people!"
Lyra stared at him, clearly startled by the raw fury in his voice, a tone she’d rarely heard from her brother even in their worst arguments.
Lazeria looked equally stunned, taking an unconscious step closer to Lyra as though the anger radiating off Theon required some kind of buffer.
Leon’s expression sharpened further, eyes flicking between Theon and the headmaster with the focus of someone recalculating every possible outcome in real time.
The headmaster, for his part, remained entirely calm, not so much as a flicker of reaction crossing his composed features.
"You think just because you think you’re strong," he said, voice even and unhurried, "that you should meddle in others’ business?"
Theon’s eyes burned, fists clenching at his sides.
"What exactly are you talking about?"
He took another step forward, close enough now that the cold radiating from the buried sword pressed against his back like a physical presence.
"We are trying to save someone here!"
The old man studied him for a long, silent moment, his expression giving nothing away. Then his gaze drifted upward, settling on the chained woman suspended in the frozen air above them, lingering there in a way that suggested he was seeing something none of the rest of them could.
His eyes moved next to the sword resting in its pedestal below her, tracing the jagged line where it fragment was taken from millenniums ago.
Finally, his gaze returned to Theon, and something in his expression had changed entirely.
His blue eyes, the same ones that had seemed capable of reading straight through every lie A students told him in class, now looked as though they were seeing something far older than the boy standing in front of him, something layered beneath Theon’s face that even him himself didn’t know was there.
Recognition flickered across his features.
Old. Ancient. The kind of recognition that came from waiting for a very long time and finally, unexpectedly, finding what you’d been waiting for.
The cavern fell into absolute silence, the blue light seeming to hold its breath along with everyone standing in it.
Then the headmaster spoke, his voice dropping into something quiet and almost reverent, stripped entirely of the authority he usually wielded like a second robe.
"You truly are the child of the prophecy. Why would you damned father send you here while knowing this."
The blue light scattered throughout the cavern trembled all at once, motes of it flickering like candle flames caught in a sudden draft.
And within Theon’s storage ring, the Eternal Frostblade pulsed once deep, and gathering energy getting ready to shatter the ring while being unmistakably certain, as though five thousand years of waiting had just, finally, come to an end.
