Chapter 285: Twelve Behind The Gate
Tali found four alternatives in twenty seconds.
All four killed more people.
Freight Gate Six stood between the crew and the three wards. Its motor had drowned years ago. Twelve manual stations on the flood side lowered the slab through separate chains, pins, and pressure locks.
The rear tunnel behind the crew already held black water.
There was no exit after closure.
Option one left the gate open for two minutes.
Outside water reached Mercy overflow, Copper Row shelter, and South Ward’s lower blocks.
Projected exposure: four thousand eight hundred people.
Option two closed Freight Gate Four instead.
Gate Four had a route reader. The outside sample controlled it and could reopen the line from Central Shelter.
Option three blew the rail junction and collapsed the tunnel.
The blast crossed a gas main below Ward Nine.
Option four used Caleb.
He still carried one shelter beam through his left shoulder while crews stabilized the dead predator site. Reaching Gate Six through the old freight rails required releasing that beam and two Bay Twelve silver anchors.
Six hundred people stood under the shelter sector.
Tali checked all four again.
The numbers stayed.
She sent the map to every distributed Record section.
Bay Twelve offered its remaining flood jacks. Travel time: nine minutes.
Mercy offered an empty oxygen truck as a water barrier. Tunnel clearance: too low.
South Ward offered Caleb’s silver door brace, then withdrew when engineers confirmed removal would close Mira’s route on six families still moving.
Ninth Harbor offered twelve chair frames as gate wedges. No vehicle could reach Freight Six.
The chamber offered emergency center authorization.
Authorization changed control and no physical time.
Sam wrote each failed alternative beside the gate order. A later reader would see more than `twelve versus 4,847` and mistake arithmetic for the whole decision.
Sal Tern held the field phone above rising water.
"Gate crew ready."
Tali looked at the twelve names on her board.
"Can any station operate empty?"
Hana answered from the wheel.
"No. Lower chains bind unless all six wheels move. Four pin stations. Gauge and pressure release make twelve."
"Can anyone clear after engaging?"
"Rear is water. Front is gate. No."
Evi Sun’s voice came through behind her.
"I can fit under until the last foot."
Hana said, "You need both hands on the lower bracket."
"I know."
Nobody said sixteen.
Tali asked Soma for current ward counts.
Mercy overflow: one thousand seven hundred twelve.
Copper Row: nine hundred four.
South lower blocks: two thousand two hundred thirty-one.
Gate crew: twelve.
The count did not make twelve small.
Caleb came onto the route line from Central Shelter.
"I can release the beam."
Soma answered before Tali.
"East support not complete. Release risks six hundred. Travel time one hundred ten seconds after release."
Gate needed seventy-eight now.
Caleb said, "Put the choice on me."
Tali put both hands on the map.
"No. My route. My call."
She opened full frame to all three wards.
"Gate Six crew. Close the gate."
The words left her mouth.
Nothing in the city became cleaner.
Hana tied her burned hand to Wheel One with the end of Tov’s mattress rope.
Tov took Wheel Two and wrapped the remaining rope around his waist so the chain could not throw him.
Dev Akin and Ben Osei took Wheels Three and Four. Left foot. Right foot.
Lysa Moor took Five and started the same bad song.
Jalen Price took Six one-handed and put a steel pin through the missing grip.
Nima Rook opened Pin Station One after confirming the Mercy pages were outside.
Gita Rowe opened Two with the west-ladder pin from her lunch tin.
Sal moved the phone to his shoulder and took Three.
Evi cut the bent housing from Four.
Fei Darr held the pressure release close to his face.
Mako Bell read the gauge over his shoulder.
Twelve stations answered.
The gate moved.
Each wheel carried a different load.
Hana’s upper chain bound twice because black water had swollen its guide. Tov took the extra pull through the rope at his waist.
Dev’s wheel turned freely and tried to outrun Ben’s. They kept left-foot, right-foot count without matching the copied voice between them.
Jalen’s steel pin bent. He turned the wheel around it until the metal took the shape of his one-handed grip.
Lysa’s weld cracked at the lower hinge. She left Wheel Five for two steps, struck the seam once, and returned before its chain lost tension.
Nobody could have left alone without opening another person’s station.
Black water climbed the rear wall.
It used Hana’s voice to tell Wheel One to stop.
Her real burned hand stayed tied to the rope.
It used Tov’s voice to say the mattress trench was live.
Tov looked down at the mattress under his boots.
"Old news."
He kept turning.
Lysa’s copied song hit every note.
Her real voice missed the third line and laughed once when the water corrected her.
The slab reached shoulder height.
The first pump sledge cleared the safe side.
The second remained across the threshold.
Gita’s west-ladder pin sat inside its housing.
"Leave the pump," Tali said.
Ben kicked the release.
The sledge rolled back toward the crew.
The gate descended past it.
Bay Twelve lost one pump and kept its manual pin.
Mako read the gauge.
"Forty. Thirty-nine. Thirty-eight."
Fei adjusted pressure by touch.
Evi’s cut housing twisted under load. She put the bolt-cutter handles through the pin slot and hung her body from them.
Hana saw her.
"Tunnel lighting still bad?"
"Terrible."
The slab reached chest height.
Black water touched Sal’s boots.
He kept the field phone above his head and read the names to Tali because copied voices had begun using all twelve.
"Hana Bex."
Wheel one answered with rope strain.
"Tov Ren."
Wheel two turned.
"Jalen Price. Lysa Moor. Dev Akin. Ben Osei. Nima Rook. Gita Rowe. Fei Darr. Mako Bell. Evi Sun. Sal Tern."
"Recorded," Tali said.
She did not thank them for dying.
The gate reached waist height.
South Ward’s lower flood sensors stopped rising.
Copper Row’s basement pressure leveled.
Mercy overflow remained dry.
Mako called twenty.
The water reached Sal’s chest and took the field phone speaker.
His mouth used the Woman’s voice.
"One operator would have moved the pump in time."
Sal’s hand struck Pin Three twice.
Local signal.
Still him.
The slab reached the final foot.
Evi cut the lower bracket.
The bolt cutter broke.
Pin Four entered.
Fei opened pressure release.
Mako called zero.
All six wheels locked.
Gate Six hit concrete.
Black water struck the closed slab from the far side.
Every manual station disappeared from the local feed.
Heat marks remained for nine seconds.
Twelve became seven.
Seven became three.
Three became none.
The three wards stayed dry.
At Mercy overflow, the route clerk with feeder dust kept breathing through the plate recovered from the mercy body. Iseul told her the gate had closed and gave no casualty number until Tali confirmed it.
At Copper Row, the former fold-return patient heard the freight pressure vanish beneath the old lift. He put the red handle down and read all twelve names from the local copy.
At South Ward, Mira’s door motor stopped smoking when the lower water pressure fell. Six families cleared the gap Hana had held open earlier that day.
The people saved were busy surviving. Gratitude arrived unevenly and after the fact.
Tali left the names on her board and added the pump sledge, broken bolt cutter, mattress, lunch tin, steel pin, and field phone under them.
Soma asked, "Command source?"
"Tali."
"Contributing delay?"
"Distributed verification, jammed sledge, outside water, route conflict. Put all of it. Command stays mine."
Continuity called the deaths proof that one operator was needed.
Restoration called them victims of centralized infrastructure.
Tali sent both parties the same response.
```
THEY WERE PEOPLE BEFORE THEY WERE PROOF.
USE NAMES OR DO NOT USE THEM.
```
Continuity read the names and kept its argument.
Restoration removed the clip.
Caleb said nothing.
Public support for the single-center motion crossed fifty-one percent.
For the first time, an actual majority asked for one address.
