My Ecchi Superpower System
Chapter 20| Countdown
Chapter 20: Chapter 20| Countdown
’From two mornings,’ Zane thought.
『 He is straightforward. Straightforward people accumulate familiarity faster because there is no social overhead to navigate. What you see is what is there. 』
They ran the morning session three ways. Zane and Maren ran their usual parallel drills. Kael did his own work nearby but occasionally called observations . Not instructions, just observations, the way someone who genuinely understood movement talked about it when they were watching something worth watching.
"Your movement pattern has a tell," Kael said at one point, not looking up from his own drill.
"What tell?," Zane asked.
"Your left shoulder drops half an inch before you initiate. Consistent. Anyone watching for it could time a counter before you fire."
Zane ran the next sequence consciously suppressing the shoulder drop.
Cleaner. Noticeably.
"Better," Kael said. Still not looking up.
Maren said nothing. But she filed it. Zane could tell from the angle of her head.
’Two people in this corner who notice things,’ he thought again. ’Still wonderful.’
Then the system notification appeared.
Ding!
『 NEW QUEST 』
『 Objective: Complete 50 Impact Breaker activation reps before end of today 』
『 Reward: Activation speed +0.05 seconds 』
『 Penalty: None 』
『 Type: DAILY TRAINING QUEST 』
’A daily quest,’ Zane thought. ’So these are a thing now.’
『 Daily training quests will be issued each morning going forward. Low stakes. Consistent completion compounds over time. Small gains daily produce significant results by trial date. 』
’No penalty,’ Zane thought. ’That’s unusually generous.’
『 Daily quests are designed for consistency not pressure. The penalty quests handle pressure separately. 』
’Fair enough,’ he thought.
He filed it away and kept training.
Then a second notification dropped immediately after.
『 NEW QUEST 』
『 Objective: Reach consistent sub-one-second Impact Breaker activation time before rank trials 』
『 Reward: Impact Breaker output ceiling +5% permanently 』
『 Penalty: Impact Breaker activation speed locked at current rate for 72 hours 』
『 Time Limit: 7 days 』
’Seven days,’ Zane thought. ’Same as the trial countdown.’
『 The timing is intentional. Peak Sigil mastery before trials is the objective. This quest aligns with that. 』
He pressed his palm against the composite ground at the edge of the pad. Pressure. Intent. Impact Breaker fired.
1.1 seconds.
’Still point one above the threshold,’ he thought.
『 Seven days. Work. 』
The trial bracket dropped at 11:00 AM.
Zane was between sessions when his communicator buzzed. He checked it in the corridor outside Room 1-A alongside most of the first year intake who had apparently received the same notification simultaneously.
The bracket was posted on the academy’s internal system . A clean grid, forty two students, paired into twenty one matchups. Names were hidden. Each student appeared as their intake registration number only.
Zane found his number. 007.
His opponent’s number: 031.
That was it. Two numbers. No names. No Sigil classifications. Just the fact of the pairing sitting there waiting for the day it became real.
He stared at it.
’031,’ he thought. ’N. Whoever you are.’
『 031 has not appeared in any acquisition prompt during your time at Aldren. Either their Sigil has not activated within your aura range or they have been deliberately avoiding proximity events. 』
’Deliberately avoiding proximity,’ Zane thought. ’That’s interesting. Though how would you even know that? It’s not like you were there when they drafted the matchup.’
『 I was not. The observation is based on absence of data rather than presence of it. In the few weeks of academy life no acquisition prompt has fired for 031. Given the density of Sigil activity in this building, that absence is statistically notable. It suggests either extreme geographic separation from your aura range or deliberate Sigil conservation. The former is unlikely given shared facilities. The latter is worth considering. 』
’So you’re reading absence as information,’ Zane thought.’Dumbass system filling me up with unnecessary info.’
『 Absence is always information. Adapt accordingly. 』
Around him students were comparing bracket numbers with varying degrees of visible anxiety. A few had already matched their numbers to faces . People who knew each other’s registration numbers from the intake process. Most hadn’t.
Zane pocketed his communicator and went to class.
Thirty-one.Seven days. Sub-one-second activation threshold still point one away.
One thing at a time.
He was crossing the east courtyard at 4:15 PM when he heard his name.
"Calloway."
He knew the voice before he turned.
Nyx Hale was coming from the direction of the practical complex, bag over one shoulder, hair down today. She fell into step beside him without asking which meant she’d been moving to intercept not just calling out in passing.
"Walk with me," she said. Not a question.
They walked.
The courtyard was quiet at this hour. Most students were in afternoon sessions or heading back to dorms. The late afternoon light did the same gold thing it always did across the composite ground.
Nyx spoke after twenty seconds of silence.
"Your sigil," she said. "What is it?"
Zane kept walking. Kept his expression neutral. Kept his pace exactly the same.
"I don’t have a Sigil," he said.
"I know what you told registration," Nyx said. "I’m asking something different." She paused for exactly one beat. "My Kinetic Sigil has stuttered eleven times since the first day. I’ve run diagnostics. I’ve checked activation sequences. I’ve reviewed output logs. There is no internal cause." A brief moment. "The only external variable that correlates across all eleven instances is your proximity."
Zane said nothing.
The courtyard kept being quiet around them.
"I’m not accusing you of anything," Nyx continued. Her voice was the same as always controlled, precise, giving nothing away. "I don’t have a mechanism. A Sigilless individual shouldn’t be able to affect another person’s Sigil output. There’s no documented case of it happening." She glanced sideways at him. "Which means either I’m wrong about the correlation or something about you doesn’t match what’s on your registration file."
Zane looked forward.
’Eleven instances,’ he thought. ’She counted. She logged them. She ran diagnostics. And she’s been sitting on the correlation for two weeks while she ruled out every other explanation first.’
’She’s not guessing. She’s concluded.’
"That’s a significant claim," Zane said carefully.
"It’s a significant pattern," she replied. "I don’t make claims. I follow data."
He stopped walking.
She stopped a half step later and turned to face him.
Up close the afternoon light caught her face differently than the registration line or the classroom or the corridor. She had dark hair, pale skin, that expression that was always processing something behind its surface. The uniform sitting the way it had no business sitting.
’Completely his type,’ he thought. ’Which was still going to be a significant problem.’
"What do you want me to say," Zane said.
Nyx looked at him for a long moment.
"Nothing yet," she said. Same words as last time. Same weight to them.
She held his gaze for three full seconds.
Then she picked up her pace and walked on ahead without looking back.
Zane stood in the courtyard and watched her go.
’She knows,’ he thought. ’She doesn’t have the mechanism but she knows the correlation is real. She’s just waiting for the piece that connects them.’
『 Correct. NYX HALE has independently identified the drain effect and traced it to your proximity across eleven documented instances. She is one logical step away from the correct conclusion. 』
’What’s the one step,’ Zane thought.
『 She needs to find a documented case of passive Sigil absorption. Currently she believes no such case exists. She is wrong. The records exist. They are simply classified above standard academy access level. 』
’So as long as she can’t access classified NSA records she can’t close the gap,’ Zane thought.
『 Correct. For now. 』
’For now,’ Zane thought.’Although the big secret would soon surface.’
He stood in the courtyard for another moment.
Nyx Hale really be doing some investigator work.
He picked up his bag and walked back toward the main building.
The system said nothing.
Which meant it agreed.
