Chapter 21: Chapter 21| Changing The Angle

Zane walked back toward the main building turning the courtyard interaction over in his head.

She doesn’t have the mechanism but somehow she’s correlating her Sigil disturbances to me.

That was the part that sat heaviest. Not that Nyx had noticed the stutters. He’d expected someone would eventually. But that she’d documented eleven instances, run diagnostics, ruled out every internal cause, and landed on him as the external variable without having a single framework that made it possible.

She was working backwards from an effect she couldn’t explain toward a cause that shouldn’t exist.

And she was almost there.

’How long before she finds the right record,’ he thought. ’Not like I’d ever admit it even if she did.’ He shrugged.’The disturbance only triggers when a Sigil Bearer activates within my aura range. And even then it’s not guaranteed. It has a 20% chance each time. Eleven instances across three weeks means she’s been activating her Sigil near me far more than eleven times. It for sure looks like she’s making up numbers or it’s someone else’s problem.’

『 She may be overestimating the pattern. Beyond system speculation. 』

’Hmm makes sense,’ Zane concluded.

『 NSA records document historical cases of Sigil Bearers whose abilities caused passive disturbances in other bearers during proximity events. Some were heroes. Some were civilians. The classification exists not because of who held the Sigil but because of how the ability functioned. Involuntary output disruption in nearby bearers during activation. Nyx Hale would need access to those classified disturbance case files to find the closest match to what she is experiencing. Standard academy access does not reach that tier. 』

’So to her it just looks like I have some kind of disturbance type Sigil,’ Zane thought. ’One that affects other bearers passively. Could be anyone, hero, civilian, anything in between.’

『 Correct. Disturbance type Sigils are rare but documented across all classifications. She is not wrong that they exist. She is simply missing the specific file that would tell her the disturbance she is experiencing is also an absorption mechanism. 』

’So she has a theory but not the full picture,’ Zane thought.

『 She has a direction. Not a destination. 』

’Does she have either,’ Zane thought.

『 Unknown. Her mother is A-rank active. A-rank heroes carry limited NSA access clearance as part of their licensing tier. Whether that clearance extends to restricted research files is outside system parameters to confirm. 』

Zane walked through the main building entrance and headed upstairs.

’So she might already have the contact,’ he thought. ’She just hasn’t made the call yet.’

『 Correct. Or she has made it and is waiting on the response. 』

’Great,’ he thought. ’Not my business anyway.’

He pushed through his room door and stood still to observe slightly.

Room 714 was quiet when he got back. Dex was at his desk watching something on his laptop with both earbuds in. Torre was asleep on his own bed for once. The squad had filtered back to their own rooms earlier than usual. The specific energy of people who had realised something important was seven days away and stopped pretending otherwise.

Zane sat at his desk and pressed his palm flat against the surface.

Impact Breaker. Palm flat. Pressure building through the contact point. Intent focused. Activation contained — nothing visible, nothing discharged. Just the warmth moving up through his wrist and settling before it could become anything.

1.1 seconds.

1.08.

1.1 again.

’Still inconsistent,’ he thought.

He kept going. Silent reps in the quiet of the room while Dex’s laptop played whatever it was playing and Gerald wheezed every twenty minutes like a metronome nobody asked for.

1.07.

1.06.

’Getting there,’ he thought.

『 Daily Quest progress: 44 / 50 reps 』

He kept his palm on the desk and kept firing.

Rep 45.

Rep 46.

1.05 seconds.

Rep 47.

Rep 48.

1.04.

Rep 49.

Rep 50.

『 DAILY QUEST COMPLETE 』

『 Reward: Activation speed +0.03 seconds 』

『 New activation time: 1.07 seconds 』

’Still above one second,’ Zane thought. ’Seven days to cross it.’

『 At current improvement rate you will reach sub-one-second activation within six days. One day of buffer before trials. 』

’Cutting it close,’ he thought.

『 This is consistent with your established pattern. 』

He leaned back in his chair and stared at the ceiling.

Seven days. One unknown opponent. Two Sigils nobody knew he had. An angular approach he hadn’t tested yet.

Gerald wheezed.

’One thing at a time,’ he thought.

He looked across the room at Torre sprawled across his bed with zero apparent guilt about it. Zane walked over and tapped his shoulder once.

Torre opened one eye.

"Wrong room," Zane said.

Torre looked at the ceiling. Then at the room. Then sat up with the slow energy of someone who had been comfortable and was now processing an injustice.

"Fair," he said.

He picked up his shoes from the floor, didn’t put them on, and walked out the door in his socks without another word.

Zane closed the door behind him, crossed the room, and dropped onto his bed.

_ _

6:20 AM.

Before Zane knew it was morning already he had freshened up and headed straight to the training ground.

The training grounds felt different this morning.

Same composite floor. Same reinforced wall. Same three arenas sitting in the early quiet. But the air had changed. Tighter, more deliberate, the specific atmospheric shift of a building that had collectively remembered something important was coming and stopped pretending it wasn’t.

Maren was already on the far pad running burst sequences when Zane arrived. She glanced up briefly when he crossed the grounds toward their corner then went back to her drill without comment.

Kael was there too, running his own warm up on the other side of the pad. He had somehow begun frequenting the training ground. He gave Zane a single nod when he arrived. Nothing more. They’d been doing this long enough that the morning routine didn’t need narrating anymore.

Zane moved to the reinforced wall and started his activation reps.

Palm contact. Pressure. Intent. Fire.

1.07 seconds.

1.06.

1.05.

He kept going. Methodical. No wasted motion between reps. The daily quest had dropped at 6:00 AM and he was already twelve reps in by the time Maren called her first rest break.

She sat cross legged on the pad and drank from her water bottle. Zane kept going at the wall.

Rep 20. 1.04 seconds.

Rep 25. 1.04 seconds.

Rep 30. 1.03.

’Consistent,’ he thought. ’Finally consistent at 1.03.’

『 Daily Quest progress: 30 / 50 reps 』

He kept going until the quest was completed at 7:00 AM. Fifteen minutes before the session ended.

『 DAILY QUEST COMPLETE 』

『 Reward: Activation speed +0.03 seconds 』

『 New activation time: 1.04 seconds 』

’Better,’ Zane thought. ’Three hundredths away from the threshold.’

He rolled his shoulder once and walked back to the pad.

Maren was just finishing her last sequence. She cut it clean at the nine second mark the way she always did and straightened up.
