Chapter 19: Chapter 19|Cracks in the Wall

’Now you tell me,’ Zane thought.

『 You weren’t at risk until someone observant enough to notice was in range. You are now. Adapt. 』

He adjusted his next sequence. Varied the load timing. Made the burst look less deliberate.

Kael didn’t comment again.

But he watched.

『 Familiarity with KAEL: 14% 』

’That’s fast,’ Zane thought.

『 He decided about you last night when you answered his comment about your father without flinching. Some people bond through shared experience. Kael bonds through observed character. You passed whatever assessment he was running without knowing he was running it. 』

12:30 PM.

Sera was already at the table. Grey hoodie again. Different one from yesterday .This one had a small logo on the left chest that he couldn’t read from this angle. Cup of something hot. Her Communicator propped up.

’She really likes her hoodies,’ Zane thought, sitting down across from her. ’Every single day. Can’t tell a thing underneath them. Which is either a personal style choice or a deliberate strategy and at this point I genuinely cannot tell which.’

’One of these days I’m going to find out what’s under all that fabric.’

’For purely observational reasons,’ he added to himself.

’The system better not comment on that,’ he thought.

『 I was not going to say anything. 』

’Good,’ he thought.

『 You were going to think it regardless of whether I commented. 』

’I said good,’ Zane thought.

Sera looked up from her communicator.

"You look like you’re having an internal argument," she said.

"Just some ongoing situation," Zane said.

She accepted that and went back to her screen.

She looked up when he sat down.

"You look like something happened," she said.

"Nothing happened," Zane replied.

"That’s the face of someone who is processing something they haven’t finished processing yet." She pushed his cold coffee across without being asked. "What is it."

Zane opened the coffee.

"Have you heard anything going around about me recently," he said. Not accusatory. Just direct.

Sera’s expression shifted slightly. Just enough.

"What kind of anything," she said carefully.

"The kind that gets seeded quietly and spreads without a source anyone can point to," Zane said.

Sera put her cup down.

"I heard something this morning," she said. "In the east corridor before first session. Two students talking." She paused. "Someone is saying you only got in because the NSA needed a PR story. That you’ve been faking competence since day one and the rank trials are going to prove it publicly. That the Sigil Theory answer was memorised not genuine." She met his eyes. "Nobody named a source."

’Ryan,’ Zane thought. ’Clean. No fingerprints. Exactly what he said he’d do.’

"How many people were in that corridor," Zane said.

"Six that I counted," Sera said. "But the east corridor at that hour . It carries. Probably more."

Zane looked at his coffee.

’Memorised not genuine,’ he thought. ’That’s the specific angle. Not attacking the answer itself — attacking the person behind it. Harder to counter because there’s nothing concrete to push back against.’

"Does it bother you?" Sera asked.

He looked up.

"Which part," he asked.

"Any of it," she said simply.

Zane thought about that for a moment.

"The part that bothers me," he said, "is that whoever started it knows it doesn’t matter if it’s true. It just has to land before the trials and let people carry it in as a frame."

Sera was quiet for a second.

"That’s a very precise way to understand a rumour," she said.

"I read a lot," Zane said.

She looked at him with that expression again .The one that wasn’t pity or admiration but something more settled than either. Like she was updating a file she kept on him and the new information was consistent with what was already there.

"For what it’s worth," she said, picking her cup back up, "I don’t think it’s memorised."

"You’ve known me for a week and few days now," Zane said.

"Maybe long enough," she said simply.

She stole one of his fries.

He didn’t stop her this time.

『 System Note: Bound Target candidate SERA DUNNE. Consistent genuine support without agenda detected across multiple interactions. Familiarity progression is steady. She is also, for the record, the only person in this building who has defended you without being asked. 』

’I noticed,’ Zane thought.

One week until rank trials.

Ryan had found his angle and planted it where it would do the most damage. Kael had clocked something about his movement that was sitting in a pending file. Maren had heard an exchange she hadn’t commented on yet.

Sera was stealing his fries and calling it fine.

’One thing at a time,’ he thought.

He took his fries back.

Sera grinned at her food and stared at him " You couldn’t just left the fries dumbass."

"I’m in need of full energy" Zane said "Maybe another time".

Outside the cafeteria window the campus ran its usual afternoon self . Students moving between buildings, the practical complex visible across the courtyard, the east wing catching the midday light the way it always did.

One week .

Whatever was coming was coming whether he was ready or not.

He intended to be ready.

_ _

6:20 AM.

Zane was already on the pad when Maren arrived. She stopped for exactly half a second when she saw him . He’d beaten her here for the first time since their first morning together . Then resumed walking without comment and dropped her bag at the edge of the pad like nothing had changed.

It hadn’t. And somehow it had.

Kael arrived four minutes later.

No announcement. No explanation. Just footsteps across the grounds and then he was there, dropping his bag in the same spot he’d used yesterday, starting his warm up with the efficiency of someone who had decided this corner of the training grounds was now part of his morning and that was simply how things were.

Maren glanced at him.

Kael nodded once.

She went back to her drill.

’He’s just inserting himself,’ Zane thought. ’No permission asked. No awkwardness about it. He just decided and now it’s decided.’

『 Familiarity with KAEL: 19% 』

’From two mornings,’ Zane thought.
