When Cecilia Vaughn woke up, she felt a splitting headache.

She opened her tired eyes and saw a man looking at her with a worried expression.

That impeccably handsome face, perhaps due to taking care of her without rest, now had dark circles under his eyes, making him look even more haggard.

It did not detract from Adrian Law’s handsome appearance, but added a touch of heartache.

...

"Cecilia, you’re awake?!"

Adrian exclaimed with surprise, then immediately took out a bowl of specially prepared white fungus lotus seed soup, offering it to Cecilia’s lips.

"Cecilia, are you thirsty? Have some water?"

Seeing Adrian’s earnest gaze, Cecilia suddenly felt a pang in her heart, recalling the bloody smell she sensed before fainting, and felt her heart being gripped by something.

"Adrian, were you hurt earlier?"

Cecilia anxiously examined Adrian’s clothing, trying to figure out where he might be injured. However, since he had changed into a new outfit and was usually strong, Cecilia couldn’t notice anything amiss at the moment.

...

"I’m fine."

Adrian shook his head with a reassuring smile.

But Cecilia didn’t believe him at all and immediately tried to unbutton Adrian’s shirt to check, only to be interrupted by a soft cough from the doorway.

"Sis... It’s already night, but aren’t you being a bit too hasty?!"

???

Cecilia was startled by the remark, and as she looked up, she saw the familiar face of her younger brother.

"Evan Vaughn, how dare you speak to your sister like that?!"

Cecilia felt a bit embarrassed, but being used to disciplining Evan since childhood, she wasn’t too awkward, ready to flick his forehead.

"No, Sis! I was just joking around."

Evan laughed mischievously, then returned to his usual well-behaved demeanor, sitting with his knees together like an elementary school student next to the two of them.

Adrian gave Evan a slight glance.

"Evan, you have classes tomorrow. I’ll have someone take you back."

Upon this mention, Cecilia suddenly remembered.

That’s right, the college entrance exams are almost here. How could Evan, this cheeky kid, be fooling around with Adrian? Even if it was to save me, with his heart condition, it’s a miracle he wasn’t a burden!

If anything happened to Evan, Cecilia would nearly blame herself to death.

"Evan, why did you come? What if you’re just in the way? We can’t take care of you."

Cecilia sounded harsh, but her concern for her brother was genuine.

"And which senior like you goes to bars and causes trouble at the lake? Just bury yourself in books."

...

Evan felt speechless, recalling the panic he felt upon receiving Cecilia’s distress message, even though she was now safe, the fear remained vivid.

"Sis, I was just too worried about you. If I didn’t pester, brother-in-law wouldn’t have brought me along."

Saying this, Evan looked to Adrian for support, hoping he would speak up for him.

But Adrian just nodded slightly and then sealed Evan’s fate with a single sentence.

"Your sister has seen you now. The driver is ready; you’re going back to school immediately."

...

Is there really a need to be so dismissive?

Evan felt resigned but helpless, knowing he might indeed become an obstacle between Cecilia and Adrian, he reluctantly decided to leave.

"Alright, Sis, Brother-in-law, make sure you both focus on healing and get plenty of rest, okay?"

"We know, we know. We’re not kids."

After shooing away the clingy Evan, Cecilia breathed a sigh of relief. But she quickly looked worriedly at Adrian again.

"Adrian, are you really okay? Can I check?"

The intention to examine Adrian was interrupted by Evan, and Cecilia was still fixated on it.

Even though Cecilia saw Adrian as invincible in her mind, who in this world could be truly without weakness?

If someone were indeed invincible, they’d belong outside the human realm, beyond the three worlds and five elements, as a god or a demon.

...

"Cecilia, I’m truly fine."

Adrian shook his head succinctly, not intending to continue the topic, instead picking up the previously set aside white fungus lotus seed soup to offer Cecilia more water.

"Your lips are chapped, you should moisten your throat."

"Then after I drink, will you tell me... if you’re really injured?"

Cecilia was in turmoil, unwilling to give up on finding out the truth.

"I’m not."

Adrian shook his head firmly.

But as soon as he finished speaking, a voice, half-laughing, sounded from the doorway.

"Brother, you aren’t even trying to lie convincingly, are you?"

...

Adrian and Cecilia turned simultaneously, and they were greeted by a rogueishly handsome face.

It’s Felix Lockwood.

And standing next to Felix was Zion Prescott.

...

Cecilia’s heart skipped a beat, realizing she was just a bit oxygen-deprived from earlier. She focused her gaze on the medical kit in Zion’s hand, and her heart started racing.

"Doctor Prescott, what’s wrong with Adrian?"

Zion’s voice was calm.

"Sister-in-law, I believe my brother just didn’t want you to worry, so he lied. He was hit on the shoulder and the bullet hasn’t been removed yet."

...

Cecilia’s eyes immediately turned red.

This big liar!

She instinctively wanted to punch Adrian’s arm, but before she got near him, she quickly retracted her hand.

How could she forget that Adrian was currently "more fragile" than herself?

And this patient was still caring for her? Was he insane?

"Why haven’t you removed the bullet?"

Cecilia’s eyes were red, but with others present, she struggled to control her emotions to avoid choking up.

"The wound is prone to infection, and Zion didn’t expect me to be wounded this way."

Adrian spoke lightly, as if the person who should be weak wasn’t him at all, even wanting to continue feeding Cecilia the lotus seed soup.

"What about now?"

Cecilia persisted.

Zion explained calmly.

"There’s everything but enough pain medication."

"Can we go back to Prescott Hospital now?"

As Cecilia thought of this, having been focused on Evan and Adrian, she only now noticed the surrounding setup, antique and pleasant.

They were still in Old Mrs. Trent’s pavilion, never having left?

Cecilia’s heart lit up with an exclamation mark.

Right, how did Adrian deal with Old Mrs. Trent’s people?
