Chapter 1673: Chapter 1647: Where the Gaze Falls, There Lies Eternity – Can We Truly Go the Distance?

After Eva Hayes finished muttering, the atmosphere in the living room became awkward.

Vesper Carter’s smile froze at the corners of her mouth as she instinctively turned to look at Joseph Lancaster, not expecting the manager’s relatives to be so rude.

Joseph Lancaster frowned unhappily; after all, they were his elders, and it wasn’t right to say anything.

Lorelei Howard and her husband, Bodhi Lancaster, also looked displeased at Eva Hayes. Eva showed no sign of reflection; instead, she defiantly retorted, “Why are you all staring at me? I’m just speaking the truth!”

“Second Aunt, that’s how it is. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What you see as grass might be a treasure in someone else’s eyes, and what you see as a treasure might be nothing to someone else. It’s ultimately Joseph dating the girl; as long as he thinks she’s good, it’s fine.”

Joseph Lancaster said with a cheerful smile, being a sly and clever man adept at solving problems effortlessly.

Eva Hayes glared at him with discontent, unable to find anything to retort for the moment. Lorelei Howard stood up and said, “Joseph, take Vesper back to our place and let your grandfather rest for a while.”

Vesper Carter stood up, “Auntie, I should be going now. I won’t bother you any longer.”

“What’s the rush? It’s your first visit. Stay and have dinner before leaving, and let Joseph drive you!” Lorelei Howard warmly invited her to stay.

Vesper Carter smiled and said, “No, Uncle, Auntie, I’ll visit you again when I have time.”

“Alright then, Joseph, send Vesper back,” Lorelei Howard said enthusiastically. Vesper Carter bid farewell to everyone and went out with Joseph Lancaster.

“This kid is really nice!” Lorelei Howard said contentedly to Vesper Carter’s receding figure, then turned to the others, “Dad, Bodhi, Daxton, what do you think?”

The old man sighed as he stood up from the sofa, “You all decide for yourselves. I’m old and I’ll go rest in my room for a while.”

The old man was assisted back to his room by the help. Lorelei Howard asked again, “Daxton, say something! You travel frequently and are worldly. What do you think of Vesper?”

Daxton Lancaster smiled, the corners of his mouth curling into an expression only he understood, “This girl is good, but it depends on whether Joseph can have a long-term relationship with her.”

After speaking, Daxton Lancaster stood up and walked toward the door.

“Hmph! Nothing good about a regular family!” Eva Hayes sneered dismissively and got up to leave.

The large living room was left with just Bodhi Lancaster and his wife. Bodhi leaned back on the sofa, arms crossed, lost in thought. Lorelei Howard looked at Daxton Lancaster’s departing figure with a puzzled frown.

“Why did Daxton say that? I think Joseph cares quite a bit about Vesper…”

…

“Thank you for helping me out, don’t take what happened earlier to heart. My Second Aunt is like that, sharp-tongued but soft-hearted.” Joseph Lancaster led Vesper Carter to the parking garage, relieved that the family hadn’t suspected anything.

Vesper Carter smiled politely and said, “Why would I? I was just here to make an appearance, and besides, what your Second Aunt said is true.”

Joseph Lancaster nodded and didn’t continue the topic, “Let’s go, I’ll take you back, didn’t mean to delay your rest.”

Vesper Carter smiled and said, “Then I’ll trouble you. Your home’s location is too remote; if there were buses, I could go back myself.”

“It’s no trouble!” Joseph Lancaster lowered his eyes, unconsciously resting his hand on Vesper Carter’s shoulder. His mind was filled with the image of Violet Zimmerman hastily leaving, unable to suppress laughing inwardly. That woman must have been jealous again.

Vesper Carter turned her head to glance at Joseph Lancaster’s hand on her shoulder, her hands tightened inside her padded jacket.
